T

here’s no place better to experience sport during the winter than at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The MCG now has the two largest vision boards in Australia, and the man in control is Sam Pemberton. Sam has been involved in the ground’s screen operations since 1996 and regularly attends the biggest sporting events in Australia. With the AFL season in full swing, here are a few of his favourites. CAFÉ: Rowena Parade Corner Store, Richmond. It’s my friendly local store with great coffee and food. BAR: Corner Hotel, Richmond. A great pub with a huge focus on live music has made it a Melbourne institution. RESTAURANT: MoVida or MoVida Next Door (whichever one you can get into on the night), closely followed by Gingerboy. At all of these places you can sit at a bar or wedge onto a small table for two and enjoy a delicious meal of shared plates. COFFEE: A long black from Jasper Coffee at Prahran Market – the perfect way to start a Saturday in the hustle and bustle of the market. SHOP: Record Paradise, Brunswick the new and secondhand vinyl available at a shop run by music aficionados.

VIEW: The city skyline at night from Bolte Bridge. When driving in from the airport after travelling interstate, this view of the city and the MCG looks great and makes me feel like I'm home.

Putting on a Show There is no better way to experience Melbourne than by immersing yourself in the range of events and attractions on offer. SPORT LOVE When it comes to sport in Melbourne, all roads lead to the MCG. While Etihad Stadium in Docklands is also home to a number of Melbourne-based Australian Rules Football (AFL) teams, for an atmosphere like no other, the 'G' is the place to be. Matches are played every weekend during winter, and tours of Australia’s most famous sporting ground run most non-game days. For something a bit different, the Medibank Icehouse is home to ice hockey teams the Melbourne Ice and Melbourne Mustangs. Catch a game or take to the ice and have a skate. »» MCG, Brunton Avenue, Richmond mcg.org.au »» Medibank Icehouse, 105 Pearl River Rd, Docklands icehouse.com.au Image (right): Andrew Chapman

Style & Substance Whether you’re looking for a souvenir or something special, you’ll find it in Melbourne. Meander the laneways or head for the high street – the choice is yours. MELBOURNE MADE Melbourne’s fashion scene is the envy of much of Australia, and local label Búl is the epitome of the local scene. Despite only existing since 2010, designer Virginia Martin now displays her elegant women’s range at Melbourne’s premier fashion events. For a fashionable reminder of a visit to Melbourne, it’s hard to find better. There’s no shortage of souvenir shops in Melbourne (see Swanston Street or Queen Victoria Market for starters), but for something a little more unique, you’ll find the perfect gift or memento at The Melbourne Shop by Lumbi. »» Búl Melbourne City Level 3, Curtin House, 252 Swanston Street bul.com.au »» The Melbourne Shop by Lumbi Shop 2, Driver Lane (behind GPO building) lumbi.com.au

SUBURBAN DESTINATIONS With more than 400 stores along Burke Road and around Camberwell Junction, the Camberwell Shopping Precinct is one of the largest and most vibrant high streets in Melbourne. If in town on a Sunday, be sure to visit the Camberwell Market (6.30am to 12.30pm). The history of High Street, Armadale, can be dated back to the 1880s, but a visit today is a very modernistic experience. Leading fashion labels, bridal boutiques and antique and art galleries are intertwined with gourmet cafés and restaurants, making this a truly luxurious destination. Just 15 minutes away by train is the quaint but bustling Puckle Street village in Moonee Ponds. With almost 50 fashion stores in the immediate area, not to mention day spas, nail salons and hairdressers, an afternoon in Puckle Street will have you looking and feeling amazing. »» Burke Road, Camberwell camberwellshopping.com.au »» High Street, Armadale highstreetarmadale.com.au

The Real Melbourne Melbourne is the envy of Australia when it comes to food, drink and nightlife. You’ll never forget the taste of Melbourne. ALL MORNING LONG As the most important meal of the day, breakfast in Melbourne is taken very seriously. The Hardware Société offers a Spanish-leaning menu (think baked eggs with chorizo, piquillo peppers and queso de cabra), while the Auction Rooms, just a short tram ride away from the city, was recently awarded Melbourne’s best café. Both brew great coffee, and will draw you in from the wintry mornings outside with a smile before warming you up and sending you on your way. »» The Hardware Société, 120 Hardware Street twitter.com/hardwaresociete »» Auction Rooms, 103-107 Errol St, North Melbourne auctionroomscafe.com.au

HAUTE CUISINE Looking for dinner with a view? You can’t go past a seat at Vue de Monde, Shannon Bennett’s restaurant – on the 55th floor of the Rialto Tower. Choose from A La Carte or Degustation menus; either way, a night here, with its 360° view, is a night of pure indulgence. Grossi Florentino shares nearly 90 years of history with you when you walk inside one of its three venues. The upper level houses ‘Upstairs’, where Australian produce is lovingly crafted into Italian cuisine masterpieces, paired with equally stunning wine, and sits atop all the bustle of Bourke Street. Over the last few years Fitzroy has seen the arrival of several prestigious restaurants that now line Gertrude Street. Heading this group is Cutler & Co, housed in an old metal works factory and recently listed as one of Australia’s Top 10 restaurants. It’s a unique experience and one to try during an indulgent Melbourne holiday. »» Vue de Monde, Level 55, Rialto, 525 Collins Street vuedemonde.com.au »» Grossi Florentino, 80 Bourke Street grossiflorentino.com

73 Dining & Nightlife

The World in Melbourne With its multicultural population, Melbourne’s dining scene thrives on the exotic, original dishes that have followed immigrants to the city. Here are a few of our favourites.

COSY BARS Melbourne’s bar scene is constantly evolving, with new venues opening all the time. Winter is a great time to get comfortable in one of the myriad of options around town. With a cocktail menu stretching back as far as the 1650s, you can settle in at 1806 knowing that you’re guaranteed to find something to satiate. While also offering many cocktail options, Eau de Vie specialises in one spirit in particular; whisky. There are 17 pages in their menu listing the different whiskies from around the world to choose from, and if you’re struggling to make a choice, the staff will be more than happy to help you out. On the fashionable Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, the Black Pearl has earned an award-winning reputation as one of the city’s best cocktail bars. In the secondfloor Attic, table service comes standard so you’ll never even have to leave your seat. »» 1806, 169 Exhibition Street 1806.com.au »» Eau De Vie, 1 Malthouse Lane eaudevie.com.au/melbourne »» The Black Pearl, 304 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy blackpearlbar.com.au

Red Spice Road

1

RED SPICE ROAD The phrase ‘where east meets west’ gets thrown around a lot, but when it comes to modern-day South East Asian-style dining, Red Spice Road is as good as it gets. Shared main meals encourage a friendly, relaxed experience just perfect for medium and large groups. »» 27 McKillop Street redspiceroad.com

2

HARAMBE ETHIOPIAN RESTAURANT Just a few kilometres west of the CBD, Footscray is a suburb on the rise. A melting pot of cultures including a large African population, Harambe Ethiopian Restaurant transports you to a traditional straw-roofed tukul, where curries, stews and breads are sure to warm you up. »» 205-207 Nicholson Street, Footscray harambecoffeemart.com.au

3

RED PEPPER Indian restaurants are found all over Melbourne, from the city’s laneways to the takeaway strips of suburbia. For an unpretentious, effortless meal, Red Pepper is sure to deliver. An emphasis is placed on traditional vegetarian options, but there’s enough meat available to satisfy any carnivore. 1806

ayside offers 17 kilometres of stunning coastline to explore and enjoy, just 15 minutes from the city centre. Bayside boasts heritage architecture, local arts and sport, and quaint high street precincts to visit and explore. Walking, cycling or driving, Bayside offers the closest truly coastal experience in Melbourne. Attractive bays, rugged cliffs, indigenous stories and a marine park vie for attention among the 90 interpretive signs of the Coastal Trail along the foreshore. You can find places to pause and contemplate seascape depictions by artists over a century ago and compare with the 21st Century reality. Learn about the bird life wheeling overhead or what the fisherfolk are dangling their lines for out on the piers. For history lovers, there are reference points around Brighton dating from a few years after the founding of Melbourne. Church Street and St Andrew’s Church formed the centre of Australia’s first private development, and the action hasn’t stopped since 1841.

Brighton Beach

Further south down Beach Road you can visit the marine sanctuary at Ricketts Point in Beaumaris. Here, at low tide you can walk out on the rock platform, or visit the famous nearby teahouse. While in Beaumaris, have a peek at the famous sand belt golf courses and see how Australia’s premier clubs gained their reputations. Or why not take in or take off and join the sailing fleets at Brighton or Sandringham. It’s all available just a short train ride from Flinders Street Station – you can hop on and off for different experiences from all railway stations on the Sandringham Line from Gardenvale to Sandringham. To assist your visit to Bayside, there are self-guided walking trail tours (visit the website for further information). 1

PRE-BOOK It is recommended that you book a taxi in advance. Consult your local phone directory, search online for taxi operators in your area, or use one of the many apps available.

2

• Speed is in km/h, not m/h, and speeding is illegal. Heavy fines are imposed if you are caught above the limit by police or speed cameras.

USE A TAXI RANK There are many taxi rank locations listed on the Melbourne City Map on page 138.

• Seat belts are compulsory in front and back seats. Children must be harnessed in a safety restraint.

3

• When turning right at an intersection you must always give way to vehicles travelling left and any pedestrians crossing the road. • Drivers are required to carry a licence at all times. International driver licences are acceptable for up to three months, however you will require a Victorian license after this period. MELBOURNE-AVALON AIRPORT When you visit Melbourne there’s an endless list of things to do, so who wants to waste time sitting in traffic or lining up in queues at the airport? If you want to touch down and drive straight out to enjoy the sights, choose Avalon Airport. Situated close to an uncongested highway, the queues are short and Avalon has the best on-time performance of any Australian airport. If that doesn’t change your mind, consider the fact that Avalon Airport is the closest airport to the Great Ocean Road, Bell’s Beach and the 12 Apostles, yet is still only 40 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD. Pack more into your holiday and fly into Avalon Airport. To book visit avalonairport.com.au
