Uniquely Melbourne Melbourne is a unique city with a few antiquities that are occasionally hard for a visitor to fathom. Here are all the tips and tricks, so you’ll know exactly what the locals are talking about. Hook Turns Don’t be alarmed. Due to tramlines running down the middle of major city streets, there are some intersections where cars turning right must do so from the left lane. The vehicle remains there until the traffic lights for the road it’s entering turn green, then it carefully executes its turn. This manoeuvre minimises congestion on the roads. Hook turns are rare and not nearly as scary as they sound. Give back Conservation Volunteers is Australia’s leading practical conservation organisation. Water Saving Melbourne is subject to water restrictions, so do your bit by keeping showers short (four minutes or less) and hang towels in your hotel room so that you can reuse them. Courtney Patterson Barista and CafÉ Owner

B

efore Melbourne's number one barista Courtney Patterson opened Cup of Truth, he had forged a long career working at many of Melbourne’s most famed eateries, where he fell in love with coffee. It was his passion for all things brewed that lead him to open this city favourite and top ten ranked café in 2009. Discover his other Melbourne favourites. Winter Drink: Cool climate Shiraz on a cold winter night. Café: As a cyclist my favourite place to hang out is at Pony Bikes in North Melbourne. Bar: I like to head to a local wine bar called Harry and Frankie in Port Melbourne, where the unbelievable selection of wines on their shelf can be matched perfectly with a cheese and cured meat plate. My treat: Uncle Rocco's Barber Shop, check it out. It’s the best experience ever. Attraction: Melbourne Zoo with my wife and daughter. The aura of being around animals you usually wouldn't amazes me. Memory: Being named Melbourne's number one barista for 2013-14 was a humbling experience and with Cup of Truth being so well regarded within Australia, I couldn't be happier.

Bayside Need a break? Visit Bayside – Brighton to Sandringham and on to Beaumaris.

B

ayside offers 17 kilometres of stunning coastline to explore and enjoy, just 15 minutes from the city centre. Bayside boasts heritage architecture, local arts and sport, and quaint high street precincts to visit and explore. Walking, cycling or driving, Bayside offers the closest truly coastal experience in Melbourne. Attractive bays, rugged cliffs, indigenous stories and a marine park vie for attention among the 90 interpretive signs of the Coastal Trail along the foreshore. You can find places to pause and contemplate seascape depictions by artists over a century ago and compare with the 21st Century reality. Learn about the bird life wheeling overhead or what the fisherfolk are dangling their lines for out on the piers. For history lovers, there are reference points around Brighton dating from a few years after the founding of Melbourne. Church Street and St Andrew’s Church formed the centre of Australia’s first private development, and the action hasn’t stopped since 1841.

Brighton Beach

Further south down Beach Road you can visit the marine sanctuary at Ricketts Point in Beaumaris. Here, at low tide you can walk out on the rock platform, or visit the famous nearby teahouse. While in Beaumaris, have a peek at the famous sand belt golf courses and see how Australia’s premier clubs gained their reputations. Or why not take in or take off and join the sailing fleets at Brighton or Sandringham. It’s all available just a short train ride from Flinders Street Station – you can hop on and off for different experiences from all railway stations on the Sandringham Line from Gardenvale to Sandringham. To assist your visit to Bayside, there are self-guided walking trail tours (visit the website for further information).
