MELBOURNE in Summer

Official Visitor Guide Australian Open

MESSAGE FROM THE LORD MAYOR Welcome to Melbourne, the world’s most liveable city for the fourth consecutive year. We were also recently named the most friendly city in the world and extend a warm welcome to 9.2 million visitors annually. The timing of your visit is fortuitous because Melbourne really comes alive during the summer. The city lights up during the Christmas season with colourful festive decorations and City Square is transformed into Christmas Square, complete with a full nativity scene, Santa and his team of reindeer. Fireworks will illuminate the sky on New Year’s Eve and celebrations take place across the city as we welcome in another year. Chinese New Year kicks off on 19 February with a cultural celebration of colour and movement, as the crowds welcome the Year of the Sheep. For one sleepless night on 21 February, White Night Melbourne celebrations will provide a light-filled sunset-to-sunrise spectacle. Summer means there is also plenty of outdoor entertainment and dining options at our renowned restaurants, along with a range of rooftop bars and pubs throughout the city. Melbourne is also home to some outstanding sporting events including the Commonwealth Bank Boxing Day Cricket Test and the Australian Open which is a big drawcard for lovers of sport. We are proud to support Destination Melbourne, Melbourne’s regional tourism organisation, and together we would like to invite you to experience and enjoy everything our city has to offer this summer: you’ll love every minute. Robert Doyle Lord Mayor

Uniquely Melbourne Melbourne is a unique city with a few antiquities that are occasionally hard for a visitor to fathom. Here are all the tips and tricks, so you’ll know exactly what the locals are talking about. KEEP YOUR CUP Disposable coffee cups are harmful to the environment, so dine in and enjoy a break, or if you must keep walking, invest in one of Melbourne’s very own KeepCups; barista-quality recyclable coffee cups. Made in a range of funky colours it is the perfect take home souvenir. »» keepcup.com HOOK TURNS Don’t be alarmed. Due to tramlines running down the middle of major city streets, there are some intersections where cars turning right must do so from the left lane. The vehicle remains there until the traffic lights for the road it’s entering turn green, then it carefully executes its turn. This manoeuvre minimises congestion on the roads. Hook turns are rare and not nearly as scary as they sound.

JOHN MCCURDY HEAD COACH, TENNIS WORLD

T

here is no where that loves tennis quite like Melbourne and we sit down with former Top 100 ATP Tour player John McCurdy. John has spent his life on the court, first as a player and then as a coach at both Tennis Victoria and Head Coach at the Australian Institute of Sport. In the lead up to the Australian Open, John shares his local hot tips.

CAFÉ: Cheeky Monkey in Richmond as it is close to Tennis World at Melbourne Park. BAR: Brown Cow in Hampton—not that I get there much! RESTAURANT: Indian Palace Brighton serves up great Indian food and is reasonably priced. COFFEE: Expresso Elements Hampton is close to home and means I can walk the dogs too. PLACE: Any one of the great golf courses in Melbourne. MEMORY: Kitesurfing which is the only sport I’m still improving at. PLACE: Enjoy the Royal Botanic Gardens before the tennis (as nice as anywhere in the world). After the tennis head to Chapel Street. »» For more information on Tennis World visit: tennisworld.net.au

Stay Fire Safe this Summer Summer is the perfect time to experience regional Victoria. Wind down and enjoy Victoria’s breathtaking scenery and diverse natural wonderlands knowing you’ve taken a few simple steps to stay bushfire safe. BEFORE YOU LEAVE • Download the FireReady app. • Bookmark the Emergency Victoria website emergency.vic.gov.au • Save the Victorian Bushfire Information Line number (1800 240 667) into your mobile phone. • Make sure your mobile phone has a fully charged battery. • Check the Fire Danger Rating for your destination on emergency.vic.gov.au as you may not have phone reception across regional Victoria. WHILE YOU ARE AWAY • On hot, dry, windy days, check Fire Danger Ratings and warnings. Fires can start and spread quickly on these days and parks and forests may be closed. • Check if a Total Fire Ban has been declared for the area you are visiting. • Listen to local radio for advice and warnings while you’re on the road. • Never travel into a high risk bushfire area where a Code Red Fire Danger Rating has been declared or where fires are burning.

Stay Informed Remember to always check more than one source of fire information. Visit emergency.vic.gov.au, call 1800 240 667, check the FireReady app, listen to local radio, talk to your host and visit an accredited Visitor Information Centre.

WHAT ARE FIRE DANGER RATINGS & TOTAL FIRE BANS? Fire Danger Ratings tell you how dangerous a fire would be if one started. A Total Fire Ban sets legal restrictions on activities that may start a fire, including restrictions on barbecues and campfires.

It holds thousands of significant items reflecting Victoria's cultural and social heritage, including Ned Kelly's armour.

»» 1300 668 810 redspot.com.au ROAD SAFETY Traffic laws in Victoria may be different to those in your home town. If you're not familiar with driving in Victoria, make sure you review these road rules: • In Australia, cars travel on the left of the road.

1

PRE-BOOK It is recommended that you book a taxi in advance. Consult your local phone directory, search online for taxi operators in your area, or use one of the many apps available.

2

• Speed is in km/h, not m/h, and speeding is illegal. Heavy fines are imposed if you are caught above the limit by police or speed cameras.

USE A TAXI RANK There are many taxi rank locations listed on the Melbourne City Map on page 138.

• Seat belts are compulsory in front and back seats. Children must be harnessed in a safety restraint.

3

• When turning right at an intersection you must always give way to vehicles travelling left and any pedestrians crossing the road. • Drivers are required to carry a licence at all times. International driving licences are acceptable for up to three months, however you will require a Victorian license after this period. Image (top, left): Roberto Seba

HAIL A TAXI You can hail a taxi from a safe location on the side of the road. A taxi is available if its dome is fully lit, otherwise it is already booked. Fares for travelling in a taxi are detailed on the passenger fares sticker inside the taxi. You can also plan ahead by scanning the QR code below to estimate your taxi fare or visit the website below. »» taxi.vic.gov.au/farestimator Twitter: @taxicommission FIND OUT MORE Scan this QR code to estimate your taxi fare
