Uniquely Melbourne Melbourne is a unique city with a few antiquities that are occasionally hard for a visitor to fathom. Here are all the tips and tricks, so you’ll know exactly what the locals are talking about. Coffee There are some things that are taken seriously in this city, and coffee is one of them. Single-origin beans, syphon coffee makers and cupping evenings have all become part of the coffee aficionado’s vernacular. Try specialty cafés like Patricia Coffee Brewers and the Sensory Lab at David Jones, both found in the city centre, to discover the brew on which Melbourne runs. »» patriciacoffee.com.au »» sensorylab.com.au Hook Turns Don’t be alarmed. Due to tramlines running down the middle of major city streets, there are some intersections where cars turning right must do so from the left lane. The vehicle remains there until the traffic lights for the road it’s entering turn green, then it carefully executes its turn. This manoeuvre minimises congestion on the roads. Hook turns are rare and not nearly as scary as they sound.

Sports Mad It is no secret that Australians are sport mad and that love finds its home in Melbourne. With five world class sporting venues in close proximity to the city, you will find a range of star-studded sporting events played out throughout the year including the Australian Open, the Grand Prix and of course Melbourne’s favourite Australian Rules Football. Fast and furious, the game is exciting to watch even for newcomers - and the enthusiasm of the supporters is infectious. ST MICHAEL'S St Michael's, completed in 1867, is built on the site of the first permanent church in Melbourne. The interior design, though ahead of its time, is influenced by a theatrical style reminiscent of Florentine galleries. The exterior reflects Tuscan style with Romanesque features. Some claim its design has no parallel in England or Australia. St Michael’s bicentennial windows are a rare expression of visual theology – the largest display of existential-religious stained glass in the Southern Hemisphere. Mingary 'The Quiet Place' (on the west side) is a gem visited by hundreds each week. Open hours: Weekday tours, 10.30am to 1.30pm (please phone for confirmation) Church Service: Sunday, 10am 120 Collins Street, Melbourne (Corner of Russell and Collins Street) 9654 5120 stmichaels.org.au

Bayside From Brighton to Beaumaris, a mere 10km from the CBD, Bayside showcases the best of spring.

B

ayside’s cliff-tops and beaches stretch from Brighton to Beaumaris and have long enchanted visitors and locals. For thousands of years, the Indigenous Boon wurrung people were attracted to the area for its abundance of food and fresh water, and its spiritual significance. From the early days of European settlement many of Australia’s celebrated sculptors and painters have been inspired by the beauty and distinction of Bayside's coastline. No trip to Melbourne is complete without taking some time out to explore the 17 kilometres of beaches and coastline in Bayside. Explore the revitalised Coastal Trail that runs along the Bayside foreshore, which now comprises four elements: history, Indigenous culture, environment and art. The 90 signs along the Coastal Trail celebrate the lives and artwork of notable Australian artists, telling the stories of the Boon wurrung people, reflecting on the historical significance of the area, while exploring the local natural environment.

Brighton Bathing Boxes

The prominent Art Trail element features work by famous Heidelberg School founders Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin, completed during summer camps between 1886 and 1907. Many artists such as Arthur Boyd, Clarice Beckett, C.A. Wilson and Jesse Trail followed in the footsteps of Heidelberg School painters in painting en pleinair (French for 'in the open air'). The trail signs are located as close as possible to where the artists stood, sometimes over one hundred years ago.

Black Rock House

GETTING THERE Train: Sandringham and Frankston lines Tram: 64 to East Brighton

The Indigenous Trail comprises works of contemporary Indigenous artists and is based on stories authored by Boon wurrung Elder, Carolyn Briggs. The trail outlines the close relationship between the Boon wurrung culture and the coastal environment. Bayside’s rich history (epitomised by the colourful Brighton Bathing Boxes) and the distinct local flora and fauna are also prominent elements of the Bayside Coastal Trail.
