Uniquely Melbourne It’s always helpful to get some local insights about the quirks and character that make Melbourne the city it is. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you fit in with the locals. HOOK TURNS Don’t be alarmed. Due to tramlines running down the middle of major city streets, there are some intersections where cars turning right must do so from the left lane. The vehicle remains there until the traffic lights for the road it’s entering turn green, then it carefully executes its turn. This manoeuvre minimises congestion on the roads. In the Know What better way to uncover the city's hidden secrets than from a Melburnian? Get all the tips and local knowledge from our hand-picked expert, and start your very own adventure.

SALVATORE MALATESTA MELBOURNE COFFEE PIONEER

C

offee, anyone? Salvatore Malatesta has, over the past decade, established himself and his cafés – St Ali in South Melbourne, Sensory Lab in Little Collins Street and more – at the forefront of what he terms the ‘third wave’ of coffee in Melbourne. With a hospitality resumé the envy of many Melburnians, he’s well placed to recommend some of his favourite local places. RESTAURANT: If you’re wanting fancy, Supernormal, at the moment, is pretty hot and very good. For a bit of a laugh, I’d recommend Welcome to Thornbury. It’s a basic set up of food trucks and a bar, but it’s been done well. BAR: The rooftop of the European, Siglo, opposite Parliament, even though it’s no longer 'cool' because it’s been there for 17 years, is still one of the nicest rooftops in the city. BREAKFAST: St Ali, of course! But if I wasn’t recommending my own venue, I’d say Ora Café in Kew.

St. Ali, South Melbourne

PRECINCT: The precinct around Domain Road and the Royal Botanic Gardens is just really pretty. Even in peak hour traffic, you feel like you’re in the country, even though you’re only a few tram stops from the city. WALK: Walking all the way down Flinders Lane from Spring Street, including a detour up and down Hosier Lane, is a must-do. You’ll see galleries, like fortyfivedownstairs, that give you a sense of the richness of Melbourne’s fabric. VIEW: I love going to the Shrine of Remembrance and sitting up top, looking over the city. It’s so relaxing. HIDDEN SECRET: Dean Sunshine’s book, Land of Sunshine, which documents Melbourne’s street art from 2010 to 2012. If you’re into street art, it’s a great place to start. AUTUMN EXPERIENCE: I think autumn’s a good excuse to drink more wine.

Culture Kings & Queens Melburnians think they live in the most cultural city in the country. If, during your visit you make the most of the venues, museums and architecture the city has to offer, you’ll probably think so too. LOUD AND LIVE Melbourne is renowned for its live music scene, and is the self-proclaimed music capital of Australia. From free pub gigs happening every night of the week to the biggest names in international music, you’ll have the chance to enjoy it all.

Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy

If you’re not sure what’s on, take a punt at one of Melbourne’s city or inner-suburban venues. Hear the tales of migrants from the past two centuries, and learn about the Australian identity. For something completely different, explore the Gods, Myths & Mortals: Greek Treasures across the Millennia exhibition at the Hellenic Museum. Housed in the historic former Royal Mint building, the museum plays an instrumental role in promoting an appreciation of Greece’s cultural legacy. »» Immigration Museum, 400 Flinders Street museumvictoria.com.au/immigrationmuseum »» Hellenic Museum, 280 William Street hellenic.org.au Immigration Museum

Comedy Capers The Melbourne International Comedy Festival runs throughout March and April, but if you’ve missed the festival there are plenty of great comedy nights to be enjoyed around town. ICONS OF MELBOURNE Melbourne is home to some stunning Victorian architecture and a goldmine of relics from the nineteenth century. The General Post Office, commonly referred to as the GPO Building and located on the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Streets, is a perfect example of that era. At the more recent end of the spectrum, Federation Square was completed in 2002, yet it took years before many Melburnians fully appreciated it. Nowadays, it’s the city’s meeting place, and its convenient location opposite Flinders Street Station means it’s always a vibrant, exciting place to visit. »» Melbourne’s GPO Corner Bourke & Elizabeth Streets melbournesgpo.com »» Federation Square Corner Flinders & Swanston Streets fedsquare.com Federation Square

MELBOURNE FOR FREE Not everything you do in Melbourne has to come at a cost. There are many ways to enjoy this amazing city without spending a cent. For a start, visit the State Library of Victoria. Home to touring literary exhibitions, permanent attractions and, of course, an inspiring collection of books, it’s guaranteed to impress. Standing sentry over Melbourne, the statuesque Shrine of Remembrance was completed in 1934 as a tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in World War One. Take the time to explore the legacy of war in Australia and pay your respects to those who sacrificed themselves for their country. »» State Library of Victoria, 328 Swanston Street slv.vic.gov.au »» Shrine of Remembrance, Birdwood Avenue shrine.org.au

41 Attractions & Entertainment

Naturally Attractive Melbourne is home to a number of beautiful gardens, and the colours of autumn make this season the best time of year to enjoy them. Here are three of the best. PUTTING ON A SHOW As well as the major theatres, Melbourne’s performing arts scene has a depth that escapes even some Melburnians. Carlton’s La Mama Theatre is recognised as the mother of all Melbourne’s independent venues, and with an enviable array of original and interpretative shows, it’s not hard to see why. Other theatres that enjoy a lower profile are fortyfivedownstairs, which recently celebrated 10 years in its Flinders Lane residence, and the Alex Theatre in St Kilda, which hosts up-and-coming productions and seats up to 500 people.

Yum, Yum, Yum As the weather cools off, Melbourne’s dining and nightlife scene goes into overdrive. Whether you try the barbecue joints or sports bars, your stomach is sure to thank you for visiting this tasty city. MEAT ME FOR A MEAL Just because you’re in Australia doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the flavours of the world. With restaurants like Meatmother in Richmond and Fancy Hank’s BBQ Joint near the Queen Victoria Market, you’re even free to embrace American barbecue the way they do in the deep south.

Rice Paper Scissors

One of the more recent additions to the scene is San Antone’s in the heart of the Crown Casino complex. Owned by award-winning American barbecue king, Kevin Bludso, it opened in 2015, has already received rave reviews and is a worthwhile stop during any Southbank excursion. »» Meatmother, 167 Swan Street, Richmond meatmother.com.au »» Fancy Hank’s BBQ Joint, 456 Queen Street fancyhanks.com »» San Antone’s by Bludso’s BBQ, Level 1, Crown Casino, 8 Whiteman Street, Southbank crownmelbourne.com.au

QUICK BITES If you’ve come to Melbourne for a show or an event, you’ll probably need to schedule lunch or dinner around the rest of your itinerary. There are plenty of places in the theatre district suitable for a quick meal. Try Red Pepper for a no-frills Indian meal, or Rice Paper Scissors, which specialises in Southeast Asian share plates. If you’re off to explore regional Victoria and you’ve got some spare time before your train or bus departs Southern Cross Station, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to fitting in a meal. One of the best is Turf Sports Bar, where it’s impossible to turn your head without seeing a large-screen TV showcasing the world’s biggest sporting events. Of course, if you’re planning on going to a match in Melbourne, try Platform 28 right by Etihad Stadium or the Corner Hotel’s rooftop near the Melbourne Cricket Ground for a pre-game drink (and a bite to eat).

Chapel Street, High Street & Toorak Road Autumn marks a new season in the latest fashion trends, so it makes sense to spend the days exploring an area famous for style. While you’re there, check out some of Melbourne’s hottest cafes, bars and restaurants. AUTUMN STYLE As we head into winter, Cable Melbourne in Beatty Avenue is a great place to pick up premium Australian knitwear. Since 2007, the brand has been producing luxurious, high-quality wardrobe staples that are built to last. While you’re in the unique avenue, take the opportunity to soak in the village atmosphere and stop by at one of the many wonderful cafes or restaurants opposite the train station including Toorak Cellars and Beatt Café.

NEW IN TOWN Since its opening in December 2015, Sth Central quickly became a favourite for South Yarra locals. Run by the skilled team behind Tommy Collins catering, the restaurant serves up modern Australian food paired with signature cocktails. Just around the corner, you'll find celebrity patissier Adriano Zumbo’s Fancy Nance, a contemporary and chic salon that turns high tea on its head. In Prahran, newcomer Bitter End forges the meeting place between clean eating and guilty pleasures. Its menu unashamedly spans grain salads packed with super foods to salted caramel donuts care of Doughboys. From the team behind Kong and Chin Chin comes Hawker Hall in Windsor, a converted stable that seats 160 and serves more than 60 dishes with Malaysian and Singaporean influences. For an after-dinner treat, head across the road to Messina, a gelataria that produces longer lines than the club down the street, but it’s well worth the wait.

As the gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula, and nestled on Corio Bay, it’s a big seaside town with plenty of galleries, shopping and dining options for you to explore. If you have the time, a visit to the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse is a must. View the dramatic scenery as you gaze down on the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, one of the world’s most dangerous stretches of water. BENDIGO This is one city that benefited greatly from the nineteenth-century gold rush, and Bendigo’s wide streets and refined, cultural charm make it well worth a visit. Throw in the Bendigo Art Gallery, one of Australia’s largest and most impressive regional museums, a thriving food scene and the fact it’s just 90 minutes from Melbourne, and you’ve got a day – or overnight – trip ready and waiting.

»» 1300 668 810 redspot.com.au ROAD SAFETY Traffic laws in Victoria may be different to those in your home town. If you’re not familiar with driving in Victoria, make sure you review these road rules: • In Australia, cars travel on the left of the road.

1

PRE-BOOK It is recommended that you book a taxi in advance. Consult your local phone directory, search online for taxi operators in your area, or use one of the many apps available.

2

• Speed is in km/h, not m/h, and speeding is illegal. Heavy fines are imposed if you are caught above the limit by police or speed cameras.

USE A TAXI RANK There are many taxi rank locations listed on the Melbourne City Map on page 132.

• Seat belts are compulsory in front and back seats. Children must be harnessed in a safety restraint.

3

• When turning right at an intersection you must always give way to vehicles travelling left and any pedestrians crossing the road. • Drivers are required to carry a licence at all times. International driver licences are acceptable for up to three months, however you will require a Victorian license after this period.

HAIL A TAXI You can hail a taxi from a safe location on the side of the road. A taxi is available if its dome is fully lit, otherwise it is already booked. Fares for travelling in a taxi are detailed on the passenger fares sticker inside the taxi. You can also plan ahead by scanning the QR code below to estimate your taxi fare or visit the website below. »» taxi.vic.gov.au/fareestimator Twitter: @taxicommission
