JOHN LISTER VOLUNTEER, FITZROY GARDENS VISITOR CENTRE

W

ith the city’s newest visitor centre opening in Fitzroy Gardens just a few months ago, we sat down with City of Melbourne volunteer John Lister. An interest in travel, Australian history and the way the City of Melbourne works led to John jumping on board as a volunteer at Cooks’ Cottage and the newly opened visitor centre. Here are some of his top tips for your time in Melbourne. CAFÉ: Mr Tulk, State Library of Victoria. Chilled atmosphere and coffee, baguettes and books – a must for the gastro-literary enthusiast. BAR: Ponyfish Island. Come on, it’s a bar on an island in the middle of the Yarra! How can this not be the coolest idea ever? SHOP: I can recommend the 'bookshop crawl' between places like Hill of Content, Readers Feast, and Readings bookstores, all within strolling distance of each other. It’s like a pub crawl, but you end up with a head full of knowledge rather than a head full of hangover. EVENT: White Night. It is a surreal experience seeing an entire city up late to see amazing light displays. PLACE: State Library of Victoria. A must-visit for the budding historian, it also has interesting exhibits and galleries to peruse. »» For more information on City of Melbourne’s visitor services or help with exploring Melbourne, go to melbourne.vic.gov.au/visitor or refer to page 130 of this publication

Cultural Endeavours Take in a gallery, join in the festival or sit back and watch the drama unfold – there is no end to this city’s passion for all things art and culture. Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car

ON SHOW The city is home to more than 100 galleries, with the most well known being the National Gallery of Victoria. This autumn make sure you check out its newest exhibition Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. The exhibition celebrates Australia’s important and proud history of automobile design and engineering, reflects on the heyday of the Australian car industry and looks at the future of vehicle design. In the heart of the Arts Precinct you will also uncover a gallery with a difference: the Yarra River Gallery. Stretching the limits, this gallery proves you don’t need four walls. Spread along the Birrarung Marr precinct on the Yarra River, it features works from some truly great artists. Works include the Federation Bells – 39 bells programmed to play specially commissioned compositions several times daily – and the historic Speaker’s Corner. »» NGV Australia, Federation Square, Corner Russell & Flinders Streets ngv.vic.gov.au »» Yarra River Gallery, Batman Ave, Birrarung Marr Image (above): Holden (manufacturer), Holden Torana GTR-X Concept 1970, Courtesy of GM Holden

STAGE ART Every year Melbourne hosts a packed theatre calendar, from the classic to the contemporary. Be awed by the best local and international acts. Spend a night doing something a little different and catch one of the season’s biggest shows, Cirque Du Soleil’s Totem (21 January–29 March). Calling Flemington Racecourse home, the show will bring together the famed troupes greatest drama and theatre in a show that is not to be missed. Melbourne Opera’s acclaimed production of Madama Butterfly (21, 22 & 24 March), perhaps the most beloved of all operas, returns for a brief March season at the Athenaeum Theatre. The wellknown story includes much of Puccini’s most famous music as the tragic tale of the ruthless exploitation of the innocent Madama Butterfly unfolds. »» Cirque Du Soleil’s Totem, Flemington Racecourse cirquedusoleil.com »» Madame Butterfly, Athenaeum Theatre, 188 Collins Street melbourneopera.com Cirque Du Soleil’s Totem

Taste Case Melbourne is Australia’s premier destination for food and wine. So sit back and relax with a long lunch after a morning of shopping or a quick dinner before you head to the theatre. LUNCH HUNT Sightseeing and exploring can work up an appetite, so sit back and relax with a long, leisurely lunch at these great spots. Be transported to the Middle East in an aromatic and mystical whirlwind at Maha. Using a fresh, innovative approach and Mediterranean influences, the menu redefines the ancient cuisine through modern dining.

Brother Baba Budan

With suckling pig, whole roast duck and veal saltimbocca, Café Di Stasio serves up true Italian fare with unmatched flare. With the addition of Bar Di Stasio next door, you can either turn up early for a quick drink before your booking or simply extend your lunch well into the evening.

MORNING DELIGHTS Melburnians love their coffee, and in this city of proud coffee drinkers, Brother Baba Budan is a staple. Named after the 17th century Sufi who smuggled seven seeds of coffee out of the Middle East and brought coffee to the world, it serves an amazing house blend.

Expect a range of gourmet delights when dining at Albert St Food and Wine – think spatchcocked quail with grilled fennel and bois boudran, and saffron gnocchi with braised veal, broad beans and sage. Inspired by rustic Italian enotecas, Spanish bodegas, and New York’s bistros and food stores, this is something a little special in the city’s north.

Charlie Lovett is another great stop on the coffee trail. Using only the highest grade of single origin estate coffee beans, which come in rare and limited quantities from all over the world, the baristas here have perfected their roast.

Di Bella Roasting Warehouse has a busy and welcoming coffee house vibe. UP ALL NIGHT When late-night festivals and shows are involved, dinner may fall by the wayside, but these open-allhours venues will ensure you are fed no matter the hour. MoVida Next Door has been a favourite in the city since it opened in 2008. With its menu of authentic tapas, there is no question why this place is always packed and buzzing. Tokyo-inspired wonderland Izakaya Den may be a little hard to find, but boy is it worth the hunt. Set behind an almost unmarked door on Russell Street, you disappear below street level for a feast of Japanese tasting dishes and a side of sake. Nestled in the heart of old Melbourne and surrounded by the Princess Theatre, Parliament House, and the iconic Hotel Windsor is The European. The menu pays homage to the venue’s name – expect the tastes of Spain, Italy and France to feature prominently. »» MoVida Next Door, 164 Flinders Street movida.com.au »» Izakaya Den, Basement 114 Russell Street izakayaden.com.au »» The European, 161 Spring Street theeuropean.com.au Image (right): Gallant Lee

overeign Hill is a living museum that tells the story of the world’s richest alluvial gold rush.

1

PRE-BOOK It is recommended that you book a taxi in advance. Consult your local phone directory, search online for taxi operators in your area, or use one of the many apps available.

2

• Speed is in km/h, not m/h, and speeding is illegal. Heavy fines are imposed if you are caught above the limit by police or speed cameras.

USE A TAXI RANK There are many taxi rank locations listed on the Melbourne City Map on page 138.

• Seat belts are compulsory in front and back seats. Children must be harnessed in a safety restraint.

3

• When turning right at an intersection you must always give way to vehicles travelling left and any pedestrians crossing the road. • Drivers are required to carry a licence at all times. International driver licences are acceptable for up to three months, however you will require a Victorian license after this period. Image (top, left): Roberto Seba

HAIL A TAXI You can hail a taxi from a safe location on the side of the road. A taxi is available if its dome is fully lit, otherwise it is already booked.
