Well known for its fashion, food, beauty and homeware stores, it is the perfect place to relax and indulge. Make sure you visit Market Import – it is right out of a South American bazaar, with colourful trinkets and hand-carved statement furniture sprawled across the sunny warehouse-like space. »» marketimport.com.au NIGHT The indulgence continues with dinner and drinks on the famed Chapel Street. From cocktail lounges to edgy bars, there is something exceedingly unique and undeniably stylish about this well loved strip. Head to Morris Jones for a delicious dinner and even tastier drinks. This bar and restaurant offers indoor and outdoor spaces making it ideal for any weather. »» morrisjones.com.au

Café: Marios in Brunswick Street is a Mecca for comedians, actors and musicians. I also love Pantry in Brighton – both have amazing coffee. Bar: The Gin Palace has to be one of my all-time favourites. It’s like Barbara Eden's I Dream of Jeannie bottle on the inside. Shop: Hill of Content on Bourke Street next to Florentino's is one of my favourites. I used to visit there every day when I was performing in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at Her Majesty’s Theatre last year. Comedy venue: The Comics Lounge is an awesome venue for comedy. I also love the Spiegeltent shows. Place: The MCG is the most amazing venue in Melbourne and if you can get to see a game of Soccer or Rugby at AAMI Park, do it. Every seat is a winner. Coffee: Anywhere in Melbourne. I regularly go to Cafe Macchiato near my place in Macedon Square or Brunetti's in Lygon Street for dessert and coffee. Restaurant: Gazi aka The Press Club is one of my all-time favourite George Calombaris restaurants. Ask for the baklava soufflé.

Celebrate Art Melbourne is so often linked to arts and culture - and for good reason - with shows, productions, festivals, major events and exhibitions filling the calendar all year round.

Immigration Museum

Past and Present Melbourne’s rich history is explored throughout the city, but the best place to discover it is at the range of museums. Head to the Immigration Museum and uncover the secrets of the city’s past. Hear stories of coming to Australia through a mix of moving images, personal and community voices, and memorabilia. From tales of immigration, move on to the stories of the country’s most nefarious at Old Melbourne Goal. Step inside this imposing bluestone institution and enter a world where some of Australia's most infamous criminals were held, including bushranger Ned Kelly and notorious gangster Squizzy Taylor.

The Paris Cat Jazz Club

The right sound Head to a gig, show or stadium extravaganza – music in this city is live, loud and not to be missed. With its pumping band room, rooftop bar and back bar, the Corner Hotel has been the unassuming host of some of the world’s biggest music names, including Mick Jagger, The White Stripes, and Queens of the Stone Age – making it the true home of live music in Melbourne.

Jump forward in time and investigate the more modern. With a stunning range of themed exhibitions and interactive scientific displays, Scienceworks will enthrall and entertain the family for hours. Experience live demonstrations, plenty of hands-on activities, or why not explore the night’s sky at the Melbourne Planetarium.

Dubbed the World’s Best Jazz Club, the intimate Bennetts Lane Jazz Club lives up to it’s name. Open every night and presenting world-class international and national jazz musicians, the club is dedicated to promoting and developing live jazz as an art form. Paris Cat is another of the city’s top jazz venues and has established itself as a destination for live music, launching the careers of many Australian jazz artists.

ST MICHAEL'S St Michael's, completed in 1867, is built on the site of the first permanent church in Melbourne. The interior design, though ahead of its time, is influenced by a theatrical style reminiscent of Florentine galleries. The exterior reflects Tuscan style with Romanesque features. Some claim its design has no parallel in England or Australia. St Michael’s bicentennial windows are a rare expression of visual theology – the largest display of existential-religious stained glass in the Southern Hemisphere. Mingary 'The Quiet Place' (on the west side) is a gem visited by hundreds each week. Open hours: Weekday tours, 10.30am to 1.30pm (please phone for confirmation) Church Service: Sunday, 10am 120 Collins Street, Melbourne (Corner of Russell and Collins Street) 9654 5120 stmichaels.org.au
