Wominjeka Welcome

No matter what you're looking for, Melbourne offers something for everyone this Summer.

Welcome to Melbourne, the world’s most liveable city for the fourth consecutive year. We were also recently named the most friendly city in the world and extend a warm welcome to 9.2 million visitors annually. The timing of your visit is fortuitous because Melbourne really comes alive during the summer. The city lights up during the Christmas season with colourful festive decorations and City Square is transformed into Christmas Square complete with a full nativity scene, Santa and his team of reindeer. Fireworks will illuminate the sky on New Year’s Eve and celebrations take place across the city as we welcome in another year. Chinese New Year kicks off on 19 February with a cultural celebration of colour and movement as the crowds welcome the Year of the Sheep. For one sleepless night on 21 February, White Night Melbourne celebrations will provide a lightfilled sunset-to-sunrise spectacle. Summer means there is also plenty of outdoor entertainment and dining options at our renowned restaurants along with a range of rooftop bars and pubs throughout the city. Melbourne is also home to some outstanding sporting events including the Commonwealth Bank Boxing Day Cricket Test and the Australian Open, which is a big drawcard for lovers of sport. We are proud to support Destination Melbourne, Melbourne’s regional tourism organisation and together we would like to invite you to experience and enjoy everything our city has to offer this summer: you’ll love every minute.

Summer would not be complete without the cheers of 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie,' as our boys in white take to the pitch in a battle for glory. This year Melbourne welcomes a feast of bowling exploits as not only the legendary Commonwealth Bank Boxing Day Test Match hits the MCG, but the much anticipated ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 also prepares to have fanatics on the edge of their seats.

The jerseys and baggie greens give way to one of fashion’s biggest icons as the NGV’s The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk continues with stunning displays from the renowned designer. For more spectacular sights it is time to take to the theatre with breathtaking musicals The Lion King and Strictly Ballroom the Musical set to launch another stellar season on stage. Rounding off the show are three not-to-be-forgotten art and cultural extravaganzas, with the opening of the unique architecture commission and design event MPavilion, the return of White Night Melbourne, and launch of the inaugural SummerSalt Outdoor Arts Festival. Turning art on its head, this first time festival will celebrate the city’s obsession with all things art, by taking it outside for five weekends of cultural exploration. From the sidelines and grandstands, to the laneways and galleries, Melbourne welcomes another season of sport, art, cultural and food discovery.

Perfect Match Something amazing happens every January in Melbourne—streets buzz and chatter turns to epic battles inside Rod Laver Arena, as the Australian Open launches a year-long calendar of sport. Ball Boys and Grand Slams The Australian Open drew thousands of fans to Melbourne Park last year— 643,280 to be exact—with plenty more tuned in across the world. But there was a lot happening behind the scenes to make the hundreds of matches a reality. From the 4,200 racquets restrung by the Wilson stringers, the assistance of 380 ball-catching ball kids, and 350 chair umpires and linespersons, in addition to 150,000 ice-creams and 200,000 bottles of water sold—and this year is set to be even bigger. The 2015 Australian Open will see the launch of the much anticipated refurbished Margaret Court Arena. The stadium has seen an addition of 2,500 seats and a retractable roof, which will make it completely waterproof and ensure more fans than ever before have access to uninterrupted tennis action, whatever the weather. Further new initiatives for the 2015 Australian Open include more than 9,500 stadium seats in Hisense Arena, accessible with a Ground Pass for the first eight days of competition, and also ticketed seating across the new look Margaret Court Arena.

Royal Saxon With two levels of clever interior design, plus a large beer garden, this isn’t your boozy local. Beyond the Ball Don’t want to miss a minute of the on-court action? Even without a ticket you can catch it all from the sideline at the many activations and events running throughout Melbourne. Keep your cool and head indoors to Melbourne's famed bars and pubs that will be spreading the tennis love throughout the tournament with live screenings and events. If being outdoors is more your style, Federation Square is a second Open hub throughout the two weeks, with the big screen showing all the highlights, as well as live scores and player interviews. They also feature a program of fun events, so pack your picnic rug and join in the Open fun— the kids can even have a hit on the Hot Shots Mini Courts and get tips from the experts.

My Melbourne This season we spoke to Melbourne AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 Ambassador and former Socceroo great Harry Kewell, who promises this to be the event of a lifetime for Australian football fans. Sydney-born Kewell, who now calls Melbourne home, joins a stellar team of Asian Cup football ambassadors including Alan Davidson, Brett Emerton and Paul Okon among others. “I will be a very proud Aussie when the anthems are played at the opening match between the Socceroos and Kuwait in Melbourne on 9 January,” said Kewell, who played in Australia’s first Asian Cup in 2007, and again in the 2011 campaign when the Socceroos went all the way to the final, only to be defeated 1-0 by Japan.

The AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 is set to be one of the biggest sporting events in Melbourne this year. Why do you think Melbourne attracts such great sport? Not only does Melbourne attract all the good sporting events like the Grand Prix, golf majors and the Australian Open, but even hip hop and R&B singers all go to Melbourne. It’s the first port of call in Australia. Melburnians love their sport. If it is a good game and good entertainment it will be sold out.

Who are the biggest contenders for the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015? People say the usual suspects, like Japan, Australia, South Korea and Iran, but I am going to throw it out there and say I think it is going to be really open this year. None of the Asian teams had a good World Cup. The likes of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar and Kuwait are up-and-coming, they are starting to learn and have different coaches and mentality now. Australia will definitely be one of the powerhouses, but I am expecting it to be a more open competition.

Harry Kewell

You have had a long history with Melbourne, playing for both Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart. What keeps bringing you back? I wanted to come back and play football in Australia and one of the first teams I spoke to in the A-League was Melbourne Victory. We had heard so much about Melbourne and I wanted to try the Melbourne lifestyle. In that season with the Victory, I fell in love with Melbourne. Melbourne always reminds me of a European city—it’s got the best of Australia, as well as offering that European culture.

Melbourne loves its sport–what is your favourite? I have a few—I enjoy the Grand Prix races, the Australian Open, special golf tournaments, the Melbourne Cup and the AFL Grand Final. There’s nothing like the atmosphere of a sold-out MCG. For more information on the AFC Asian Cup Australia, visit afcasiancup.com

Harry Kewell's Melbourne Favourites… Café: The Pantry, Brighton—my family love it; great food and

there is always something happening there. Restaurant: Maha, off Bond Street. I love everything about it;

first and foremost the food. It’s one of those places where you have a favourite dish—the slow cooked lamb is the best. Event: Grand Prix—what they do is amazing; it’s a wonderful day.

Roaring Success Recently making history as the world’s biggest musical, The Lion King is returning to the Regent Theatre, 10 years after it wowed Melbourne audiences. The family friendly and award-winning, epic tale of fulfilling one’s destiny will delight with glorious colour, stunning effects and unforgettable music, including Elton John and Tim Rice’s Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata and the Academy Award-winning Can You Feel The Love Tonight? Set against the majesty of the Serengeti Plains, the re-imagined show is truly breathtaking.

Strictly Spectacular From the silver screen to the stage of Her Majesty's Theatre, one of the country’s favourite films is set to be one of the best musicals of the year. The Baz Luhrmann directed stage adaptation of Strictly Ballroom will tell the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart. With a score filled with classics such as Love is in the Air and Time after Time, as well as some wonderful new songs by local artists; Sia and Eddie Perfect, get ready to be dancing in the aisles.
