My Melbourne Last year the much unknown White Night Melbourne took the city by storm and this year it is back to amaze and awe once again. We chat to Andrew Walsh AM, Artistic Director of White Night Melbourne, and find out what can be expected from round two. Tell us a bit about what you do. I’m a lucky fella, for the past 30 or so years I have worked all over the world creating shows large and small. I’ve directed expo pavilions in the USA and Japan, ignited the Thames in London with a huge pyrotechnic show for London’s Millennium celebrations, created stadium shows for the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and worked with some of the most talented and extraordinary people in Australia and around the globe. Now I am back in my hometown Melbourne creating my second iteration of White Night Melbourne.

Tell us about White Night Melbourne. White Night Melbourne is an all-night cultural event where Melbourne’s streets are closed and art and culture rule the night. Hundreds of artists, performers, designers, creative individuals and groups devise works for that one night, 22 February 2014. From 7pm to 7am our city comes alive and is a labyrinth of discovery, with art and culture on display in unusual places – the premise for the night is expect the unexpected. Thousands of people flock to the city to take part in a night like no other.

What is your pick of White Night Melbourne this year? We’re putting together a programme that will surprise and delight. Key streets of the city will again be closed to traffic, however the trams will be running all night on all routes. Venues ranging from the City Baths to the NGV will host all-night installations that will be creative and innovative, so keep an eye on the event website for programme details and a guide on how to plan your night.

12

Why not see a show and spend the night discovering the unexpected, then have a late morning coffee and a stroll through the gardens before a late lunch? There is so much choice in Melbourne, how about making a weekend of it!

Melbourne is often touted as the Arts Capital - what do you think really makes the city’s artistic flair stand out? Without a doubt it is the Arts Precinct and the accessibility to these venues. Melbourne has such a fundamental relationship with art and culture. This is clear from the prominence of its cultural institutions, their locations and the role they play in the life of the city. The diversity of Melbourne’s population makes for a rich and exciting culture. The city is unique because of its people and the part that they play in embracing art, culture and sport.

As a Melburnian have you been influenced by Melbourne’s rich arts culture? I grew up and was at school in Melbourne so I have been immersed in Melbourne’s arts scene from an early age. The richness and multiplicity of what is on offer in our city has been a strong influence on me and I am constantly surprised and charmed by Melbourne’s artists, their innovation and proficiency at their craft.

What are your favourite pre and post event haunts? I’m a complete sucker for the Queen Victoria Market's Bratwurst stall. Post event I love to take a long walk along the beach from Port Melbourne to St Kilda.

Andrew's Melbourne favourites… Café: St Ali in South Melbourne for the simplicity of the setup and the stellar coffee and food. Then there’s Pellegrini’s - it reminds me of my father and the times we would meet to enjoy a coffee together. Bar: Naked for Satan has a wonderful rooftop terrace with views of the city, great drinks and a good vibe. Restaurant: Florentino – its old Melbourne and an icon. Guy Grossi keeps the menu fresh and up-to-date while paying homage to tradition. For me it evokes memories of family and the many celebrations we have enjoyed there over the years. MoVida and Cumulus for cutting-edge cuisine and my new favourite, Gazi - evokes the suburb of Athens from which it takes it name.

Coffee: Melbourne has so many great places to drink good coffee, where do I start? I always look for Colombian coffee in support of my dear friends Barry and Adriano who own a coffee plantation in Colombia. Shop: Henry Bucks. And the many quirky Galleries and design shops in and around Smith and Gertrude Streets. Books for Cooks – an Aladdin’s cave of food and wine writing and Tim and Amanda are very knowledgeable and helpful. Treat: South Melbourne Market. I just love the Dim Sims. Place: The garden at the NGV. It is very beautiful and always has a great sense of calm and serenity. Memory: Visiting the Royal Botanic Gardens as a child and rolling down the grassy verges. I also remember the many pergolas made from different materials that are dotted around the gardens. A great place to hide and just read a book.

Embrace the Night From dusk til dawn, White Night Melbourne celebrates the city's passions – music, art, dining, theatre, sport, fashion, film, design and performance. White Night Melbourne is back this year and is set to once again amaze and awe; for 12 hours - 7pm on 22 February to 7am on 23 February 2014 - the city will become a canvas for local and international artists in one of the biggest celebrations of arts and culture for the year. White Night has been held in over 20 cities worldwide and this year’s event will mark the second in Melbourne – with last year’s being the first event of its kind in Australia. The evening features free activities at key locations throughout the city. Venues such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Arts Centre Melbourne, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, State Library of Victoria, Melbourne Museum and many other public and private spaces open their doors for a night of celebration and exploration. With special exhibitions, street performances, fashion installations, film screenings, multimedia projections, concerts, dance and interactive events, this is a night to remember!

Dinner on the Move Exploring Melbourne’s laneways, rooftops and riverbanks works up an appetite. Make your way to Art Centre Melbourne for food, drink and a great atmosphere. Head to the Hawkers Food Market on the iconic lawns next to Art Centre Melbourne, for a dinner on the run made easy. The iconic Tram Bar will be open all night, providing the perfect spot to grab a refreshing brew and drink in the vibrant surroundings. Or why not take a breather with a BBQ feast and refreshments at the courtyard bar out the back of Curve Bar.

Get Fresh

With sunny afternoons and balmy nights filling the calendar, there is nothing better than getting out and making the most of Melbourne’s outdoors. Festive Season

Celebration Central

During December, Melbourne lights up with decorations enveloping the city; buildings lit up like giant wrapped goodies, a forest of Christmas trees sprouting in stores and streets, and of course the jolly man himself, Santa, making appearances at venues across town.

Kick off the new year at Midsumma Festival, a celebration of queer culture that brings together some of the best performing arts, live music, food, fashion and forums. With a vibrant and exciting program which spans three action packed weeks, there is a lot to explore and experience. Highlights of the festival include the much anticipated opening night Carnival and T Dance at Birrarung Marr. With a flamboyant and effervescent atmosphere and world class DJ’s providing the tunes, you will soon be dancing the night away.

Arts Centre Melbourne puts on quite the show with Deck the Houses lighting up the front lawn of this iconic Melbourne building. A homage to Melbourne’s suburban traditional Christmas, Deck the Houses is a free Christmas installation featuring a spectacular metallic pop-up house, covered in shining Christmaslights that will delight visitors from day to night. Join in the celebration as City Square in the heart of Melbourne becomes Christmas Square. Beneath the shade of the huge bauble covered Christmas tree, you will find Santa’s famous reindeer, Rudolph, hidden in the Christmas maze, and discover nutcracker soldiers, giant presents, and a digital nativity scene. The excitement continues after the Christmas lights are taken down as Melbourne prepares to throw one of the biggest parties of the year, providing the perfect way to farewell 2013 with celebrations around the city. Head to Yarra Park for family entertainment and activities, as well as the 9.30pm fireworks. For a good view of the midnight fireworks head to Treasury Gardens, Kings Domain, Flagstaff Gardens or Docklands.

20

The revelry continues as St Kilda Festival takes over the shore for a week of music, markets and art. Spanning over nine days, the festival is famous for its rich mix of music and cultural entertainment, not to mention its scenic location along the palm-lined foreshore of this iconic bayside suburb. Make sure you clear your diary for Festival Sunday, arguably the most popular event of the packed program. The day features big name musical acts performing across multiple stages, festival food markets and roving entertainment. Hosted at Sandringham Yacht Club, the ISAF Sailing World Cup is set to launch off in early December, with the world’s best sailors in town to celebrate and compete in this annual event. Whether you are in the water or out, there will be something to suit everyone with a shoreside marine carnival. Image (above): Lucas Dawson Photography

Street Secrets

In Melbourne, laneways are more than meets the eye – they hide a creative and innovative world where every surface is a canvas and every store front offers a unique and exciting experience. Street Treats

Rare Finds

Arts Alive

There is no better place to indulge than in the city’s famed laneways. Over the last few years dining clusters have popped up in Flinders Lane (1) and Meyers Place (2), adding to the already long list of laneway food precincts which include the renowned Degraves Street (3) and Hardware Lane (4).

Lined along many of Melbourne’s laneways you will discover a host of shopping delights. Explore Russell Place (6), Degraves Street (3), Flinders Lane (1) and Crossley Street (7) for a treasure trove of eclectic boutiques and stores, stocking a huge variety of fashion, homewares and so much more.

It may be small but big things are happening in Warburton Lane (5). Start with a dinner of delicious tapas and Jamón - a traditional Spanish cured ham at Portello Rosso (5). Right next door is Murmur (5) with an impressive cocktail list - you will be glad to grab a seat and watch the evening pass by.

Head to the Royal Arcade (8) for a horde of shopping treats; indulge in a macaron at Little Royal (8) or pick up a designer trinket from one of the many jewellery and clothes stores. Since 1869, this bustling arcade has provided the perfect place to find a little piece of Melbourne to take home.

From wall to floor Melbourne’s creativity drips from the laneways and byways that wind through the city centre. The city will, this summer welcome its second White Night Melbourne (9) - an evening of art and light celebration with the city transformed by stunning artistic light projections. The laneways dance with color as clever images flicker across the walls and floors.
