Fashion, Festivals and Football

From football to fascinators, Melbourne is event mad as the city welcomes some of the best sporting, fashion and art festivals. One can’t think spring in Melbourne without the Spring Racing Carnival popping into mind, and for good reason with over two months of glamorous race day celebration on the menu. The highlight of the racing season is the Melbourne Cup Carnival, a week long celebration, from the excitment of the Emirates Melbourne Cup Day to the fashions of Crown Oaks Day. There's plenty to love about this time of year! Before you head to the races some primping and preening is a must. Try the city’s famed milliners in the Nicholas Building on Swanston Street for a hat that will set you apart from the crowd. Or invest in a new dress at fashion hubs Melbourne’s GPO, Bourke Street Mall and Chapel Street in South Yarra. If you are lacking muse, head to Melbourne Spring Fashion Week and get some inspiration right off the runway from some of the best designers from Australia and all around the world. For the men - take your look straight from the man of style himself, James Bond. Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style at Melbourne Museum, is an exhibition dedicated to the ultimate on-screen spy; from his gadgets and high powered toys to his sharp suits and charming style, you

will walk away inspired. Make a trip to Melbourne’s expert tailors for a new look that will have you quickly exuding Bond’s iconic panache. Now you are dressed to impress, head out and explore the city’s best; arts, music, food and theatre are brought together for two very special events – the Melbourne Fringe Festival and Melbourne Festival. Both entice artists and performers from across the globe in celebration of this city’s passion for arts. This year will also see the launch of the National Gallery of Victoria’s biggest exhibition to date; Melbourne Now, a collaborative exploration into Melbourne’s rich innovative and creative culture. For those that like their entertainment a little more action packed, Melbourne won’t let you down. The Toyota AFL Finals Series kicks off and for weeks the city will be on the edge of its seat until the new premiership champions are crowned at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during the Toyota AFL Grand Final. The sporting glory continues with the Australian Masters of Golf and the World Cup of Golf, both taking up residence at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club for one action packed week. Melbourne Cup Carnival

Racing Revelry Chill the champagne and prepare to cheer, as the city gears up for one of the biggest celebrations of the year. Carnival of Champions As the days get warmer, excitement fills the air as the city awaits the launch of the Spring Racing Carnival (22 September - 25 November). Talk turns to fascinators, frocks and fillies as the BMW Caulfield Cup starts a season of glamour and thoroughbred racing. A week later the Sportingbet Cox Plate races into Moonee Valley, initiating the coming of one of the most exciting weeks on the calendar with the Melbourne Cup Carnival (2-9 November) which thrills crowds from across Australia at Flemington Racecourse.

Chasing the Cup The Melbourne Cup Carnival kicks off with a flourish as the AAMI Victoria Derby Day sets the

pace for the week of racing fun. Derby Day is one of the most preeminent race days on the calendar and is followed closely by the renowned Emirates Melbourne Cup Day. Since its first running in 1861, the Melbourne Cup has become one of the nation’s favourite events. The race is anticipated for months prior, with groundskeepers at Flemington nurturing about 12,000 fragrant roses in time to bloom for the big day, and the race is recalled for years after. It truly is ‘the race that stops the nation™’. But the racing fun doesn’t stop with the cup, the carnival continues with the running of ladies day - or Crown Oaks Day as it is more formally known - and the family friendly Emirates Stakes Day, which sees Flemington filled with picnic rugs, children’s games and entertainment.

Preparing for the Big Day Getting to the races is easy, with trams and trains running from the city centre to all four of Melbourne’s racecourses. For more information and timetables, see website and phone number below. Tickets for most racedays are available from the gate, although they do sell quickly. The Melbourne Cup Carnival however, is a fully ticketed event and all tickets must be pre-purchased. Melbourne's GPO

Fashion First

Dress to impress - it is the time to shine as fashion takes over the city. From Head to Toe Hats may be the talking point of race day, but there is no outfit without a dress and accessories. Make your way to these shopping precincts for a mix of vintage gems and modern masterpieces that are all sure to have heads turning on the big day. Right in the heart of the city, Melbourne’s GPO is a literal fashion hub. Coming a long way from its beginnings as a post office, it now stands over the bustling Bourke Street Mall, its gleaming white façade hiding a treasure trove of shopping delights. From across the sea, to local designers this is a one-stop-shop for all your fashion needs.

Straight from the Parisian fashion pages comes Collins Street. Filled with luxurious labels from around the globe, this is fashion that causes a stir - think Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Prada. Not missing a beat, this retail haven will have dressed in style. If shopping is on your to-do list, then head just out of the city to the fabulously chic Chapel Street. This stylish street hordes fashion; from high street to haute couture, it has every base covered. Bourke Street Mall is convenience at its purest, right in the heart of the CBD. Flagship department stores Myer and David Jones are in residence and offer everything you never knew you needed, in a range of colours and styles.

My Melbourne It is the busiest time of year for Richard Nylon, but that hasn’t stopped the Milliner extraordinaire from enjoying the best of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Tell us a bit about your background. How did you get started as a milliner? Millinery started off as an accessory to my first career as a fashion designer I always created hats to go with the outfits I designed. I enjoyed making hats more than making garments and it seemed like a natural progression for me.

What is your favourite not to be missed race day? AAMI Victoria Derby Day. As it’s the first big race day of the Flemington season, there is always much anticipation by fashionistas and racegoers alike, to see what fashion trends are being reinforced. Sometimes trends even begin at the course, but the style is always very sophisticated.

What are your favourite fashion trends and hot hat tips for this year's Spring Racing Carnival? For fans of black and white, there is a very strong trend towards 60’s monochrome, as evidenced by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton. The fashionforward women will be wearing structured hats towards the back of the head, Breton style. Print remains a huge fashion favourite and floral also predominates, mixed with touches of high tech.

Richard Nylon

Over the last few years men's fashion has become as much a part of the races as the ladies, would you agree? What do you think has brought about this change? With so much more access to images of fabulous men’s outfits, this is having an effect the way Australian men dress. Television shows, music and film also have a strong influence on men’s fashion. The ‘Mad Men’ trend is well and truly established, but I trust that Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ will influence men’s racing fashion looks this year.

As a local, have you been influenced by Melbourne’s rich arts culture? Melbourne has one of the most vibrant arts cultures of any city in the world, particularly on the north side of the Yarra, where there are many designers' studios in the warehouse spaces of Fitzroy and Collingwood. What I find most inspiring is the energy and commitment of new designers.

Melbourne is often touted as a fashion capital. What do you think really makes the city’s style stand out? Melbourne has had a strong history of stylish dressing. I am making a distinction between fashion and style. Fashion is the wonderful thing that we are offered every six (or fewer) months. Style transcends seasons. Melbourne’s style is eternal. Image (above): Rachel Perry

Richard's Melbourne favourites… Café: Brother Baba Budan on Little Bourke. Great tea! Treat: A scrumptious carrot cupcake from Grace Café, on the corner of Rose and Fitzroy Streets. Delicious and only twenty metres from my studio. Place: I love ferns, and have seven beautiful specimens happily growing in the Gwendolynne Boutique (my studio is located directly behind it), so greenhouses in Melbourne where ferns grow are a place of peace and inspiration.

Brother Baba Budan

14

Memory: I was with a very glamorous friend at Flemington wearing one of my spectacular hats, to which the photographers went mad for. It was my very first ‘coup de theatre’ at a racecourse.

The Art of Life

From the street to the gallery, Melbourne pulls out all the stops this season, with three months of art and cultural celebration. Art to Scale For 152 years the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has presented Melbourne with stunning exhibitions ranging from the masters of paint to modern masterpieces, but they have never delivered an exhibition of this size. This year the NGV will welcome Melbourne Now, a collaborative exhibition of 130 artists, designers, architects and sculptors. With over 250 works on display including; sound and light installations, video commissions of Melbourne’s laneways, interactive artworks, performances and workshops, this ambitious staging is set to take the city by storm.

Melbourne Now represents a new direction for the NGV and Melbourne. This exhibition is not only collaborative in its artistic approach but also in its interactions between the artists and audiences; through ground-breaking artists projects, commissions for families and kids, architecture and design initiatives, and curatorial engagement with dance, performance, music and sound, this exhibition helps create a new interactive relationship between the two parties. Refuel and Revive There is nothing better than experiencing Melbourne’s renowned food after a long day exploring a gallery or enjoying a show. • Hidden in a warehouse with a long history, the newly opened Krimper has come into its own. Once a sawmill and cabinetmaking factory, it is now a warm and inviting space with a menu to match. • Perfectly industrially chic, Dukes Roasters is home to perfectly delicious coffee and equally tasty treats. • This year the Melbourne Festival will service the crowds in style with the Foxtel Festival Hub. A custom-designed bar, club and hub in the heart of the Festival precinct. • Warm, cosy and inviting Brother Baba Budan is definitely worth the trip, the coffee is great and you can pick up a seriously tasty pastry or cake to enjoy as well. • Situated in the heart of the arts precinct, in the heights of Hamer Hall, Trocadero has quickly become a favourite for locals and visitors alike.

With beautiful sunset views across the water, make sure you stick around and take advantage of one of the best seats in the city at Docklands. With a long and mouthwatering list of restaurants, bars and cafés to pick from, you will be spoilt for choice at Docklands.

As the name suggests, popular food truck Mr Burger are all about burgers. They are US-style, meaning big, juicy and filled with delicious cheese.

To get the best sky views there is only one way to go – up. The Aylesbury is a new kind of rooftop bar – forget faux palm trees and jungle themes, this venue is all style. With clean lines and a truly industrially chic kit out, you will be inspired to spend your afternoon drinking champagne and nibbling on delicious treats. Beer drinkers and wine lovers will find a new drink of choice at the stunning Red Hummingbird. With wide open views of the city skyline and night sky, this is the place to be on warm spring evenings.
