Joining the celebrations is easy with something to suit everyone – choose from arts and culture, music, comedy, food and wine, theatre and sport.

The festival fun rolls on with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Giggle your way through the many gigs and shows from some of the world’s funniest folks. It doesn’t stop there, with the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show blooming into Carlton Gardens for a festival of colour, design and, of course, florals.

Kicking off the festival season is the much-anticipated Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Feast on a menu of delectable events that are sure to have you running back for seconds. Work off all the foodie fun and get your game day colours out as the 2015 Toyota AFL Premiership Season brings back the city’s favourite pastime. Keep the cheer going and join the rest of the world as the huge finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 get underway in Melbourne.

Arts and culture are not forgotten, with Moomba Festival bringing the city together, and another impressive worldfirst exhibition taking up residence at the Melbourne Museum. WW1 Centenary Exhibition explores the tales from the frontline like never before.

The action continues with Aussie favourite Daniel Ricciardo taking to the track for the 2015 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix. From high-octane racing to towering high heels on the runways, the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival showcases the city’s preoccupation with fashion in a week-long design celebration. Head to a show, take a workshop or just watch, as style takes to the streets.

Finish off the season with a spot of drama as you take in one (or two) of the many great shows that are lighting up the stage. From family favourite The Lion King to the Aussie classic Strictly Ballroom the Musical and the notto-be-missed cult film adaptation Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage, you will not be short of options. Whether you decide on a show, festival or event, you are bound to be impressed by what Melbourne has on offer this autumn.

Roaring Success

Join Baby, Johnny and his band of dancers for Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage (from 4 March) at the Princess Theatre as part of its 10th anniversary tour. Seen by millions across the globe, the worldwide smash -hit tells the heart-warming love story of Baby and Johnny – two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds, who come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives.

Nothing beats reliving a childhood favourite and there is nothing as immersive as seeing it on the stage. This autumn catch up with Simba and friends in family favourite The Lion King, now showing at the Regent Theatre. In town for what has been a brilliant season of award-winning theatre, this re-imagined production will continue to delight audiences with glorious colour, stunning effects and unforgettable music, including Elton John and Tim Rice’s ‘Circle of Life’, ‘Hakuna Matata’ and the Academy Award-winning ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight?’ Set against the majesty of the Serengeti Plains, this breathtaking production tells the story of Simba, the wide-eyed cub who undertakes an epic journey to fulfil his destiny as King of the Pridelands.

Spawning two multi-platinum albums and multiple hit singles, including Golden Globe, Academy Award and Grammy Award-winning ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’ as well as ‘Hungry Eyes’, the score is filled with musical gems and karaoke favourites that will have you hungry for more and, dare we say it, dancing in the aisles. Image: Jeff Busby - Kirby Burgess (Baby) and Kurt Phelan ( Johnny)

Strictly the Best Become absorbed in a world of dance, competition and passion as you witness the inspiring journey of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart in Strictly Ballroom the Musical (now showing). My Melbourne Funny man Tommy Little, who you might recognise from such TV shows as The Project and A League Of Their Own, is back on stage this season for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Since his debut at the festival in 2009, and being dubbed ‘the future of funny’, Tommy has become a firm favourite on Melbourne’s comedy scene. So much so he’s branched out, taking on the small screen – where he’s also flexed his acting muscles on It’s A Date and Time Of Our Lives – and radio, where he hosts Nova Breakfast with Meshel Laurie. Last year, tickets to his Melbourne International Comedy Festival show Middleclass Gangster sold out, so it’s not surprising he’s making a return in March and April, this time with his new show Enter the Weapon.

Tell us a bit about how you’ve come to be where you are today. How did you get started as a comedian? It all started with my mum and dad doing something unspeakable behind a shed at a B&S ball in a town called Bunyip in country Victoria. Since then it’s been an equally glamorous series of failures that have led me to the only job from which I am yet to be fired: comedian.

What can we expect from your show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival this year? A feast for all the senses! Flavours and spices from around the world will combine to create a taste sensation in Melbourne.*

Who are some of the must-sees you’ll be checking out during the festival? I’ve heard rumours that my show will be so good I plan on checking it out every night. Apart from that, you should go to see Nazeem Hussain and Nick Cody. Nazeem is hilarious and Nick needs the money.

What are your favourite pre- and post-show haunts in Melbourne? My days of drinking before shows are long behind me. During the festival, Cabinet Bar in Rainbow Alley is a great little place for a civilised sip. After that head to Gin Palace in Russell Place for late-night shenanigans. *OK, so that is actually a description from a local food festival, but don’t worry because my show will be just like that, except with jokes. For more information on the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and to buy tickets, visit comedyfestival.com.au

Tommy’s Melbourne favourites… Café: Alimentari on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. It’s great people-watching. Restaurant: Shanghai Dumpling House on Tattersalls Lane. You can get fed and yelled at by the wait staff for less than 10 bucks. Bargain! Event: The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, of course. The best comedians from all around the world travel to our little city with the sole purpose of trying to make us laugh.

Vibrant Visuals

Forget fashion faux pas and get your stylish threads on, since there is no slacking when it comes to fashion in Melbourne. Launch into a world of accessorising, coordination and colour blocking as you explore the boutiques that fill their window displays with designer wares. From the exclusive brands on the top end of Little Collins Street (1) and Flinders Lane (2) to the rare, vintage and sometimes bizarre of Degraves Street (3) and the Royal Arcade (4), fashion is at home in the city’s laneways.

You won’t go hungry as you explore the city’s maze of laneways, with cafés, restaurants and bars playing a game of hide and seek and revealing themselves in the most unlikely places. Feast on foreign and exotic flavours at the foodie hub that has exploded in Meyers Place (5) at the top end of the city. Sample Argentinean treats at San Telmo or fill up on soul food and enjoy funky tunes at Mr Big Stuff. No matter your craving, this little laneway has all the flavours of the world.

Light installations, suspended sculptures and miniature galleries continue to surprise and amaze visitors as they wander the colourful laneways and uncover this exciting and unique side to Melbourne. Since 2001, Melbourne has commissioned local and international artists to create stunning temporary displays on sites across the city. Take a turn off one of the major streets and you could discover the much discussed and photographed works. The famously named AC/DC Lane (6), Manchester Lane (7), Hoiser Lane (8) and Union Lane (9) all host ever-changing, vibrant patchworks of exciting artwork that will have you mesmerised.
