My Melbourne With the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival hitting up the city’s streets, we spoke to local designer Yeojin Bae about all things fashion in the city.

Yeojin Bae

Tell us a bit about your background. How did you get started as a designer?

What are your favourite fashion trends and hot tips for this year?

I’ve always wanted to be a fashion designer from the moment I could speak, probably influenced by my grandfather who was also a fashion designer. I attended art school in Seoul, Korea from the age of four and moved to Australia when I was five. I have the most amazing parents and was supported and mentored to follow my heart at all times and I graduated from the Whitehouse Institute of Fashion when I was 17. I then spent 14 years as a designer across many Australian brands, a few years working in NYC and started my own label in late 2006.

Candy coloured coats and animal prints worn top to bottom.

What is your favourite not-to-be-missed part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival?

As a local have you been influenced by Melbourne’s rich arts culture?

The runway events are great as its gives the consumer an opportunity to experience fashion shows which are usually industry events. And I always make time to go to the business seminars as they draw upon a wealth of knowledge from many industry leaders.

Street style is becoming more and more the focus of fashion week across the world. What are your style tips for anyone attending the fashion festival? It’s really great to see everyone really enjoy dressing up to come to the shows. My style tip would be to keep it individual, chic and a little effortless. When you are being yourself, you don’t have to try so hard.

Yes! Melbourne is so multi-cultural and this lends itself to a diverse art scene that brings many contrasting and complimentary influences.

What are your favourite pre and post show haunts? It would usually involve eating pre or after a show. Some of my favourite restaurants are Tonka or CODA, and Lau's Family Kitchen is always a favourite.

Yeojin’s Melbourne favourites… Shopping: CBD Melbourne, from small local boutique designers to great international brands at Marais. And the most beautiful Myer store. Café: Il Fornaio in St KIlda. It’s local and has a great brunch menu and fresh coconuts, and really chilled, friendly staff. Restaurant: Tonka in the CBD. I was spoilt with really delicious modern Indian food and can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu. Event: My husband organises a French music festival every January called So Frenchy So Chic at the beautiful Werribee Park and of course VAMFF. Tonka

Treat: Aurora Spa in St Kilda for the best facials, and Pana Chocolate for raw vegan chocolate and desserts.

The 24 Hour Experience For 24 exciting hours, Melbourne will become a stage for some of the countries best emerging and established performing talent. With one performance on the hour, every hour in different CBD locations there is bound to be something for everybody. The live works will be innovative and cross-artform, including elements of theatre, multimedia, visual art, performance, film and dance.

Season of Shows After 17 years, the world acclaimed Les Misérables is returning to Australia and will be gracing Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre. Seen and loved by over 65 million people and having received more than 100 major awards, this is truly one of the world’s most popular musicals. This much loved blockbuster returns to Australia with all your favourite heart-wrenching musical numbers and new staging, including stunning re-imagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo – this is a not to be missed show. Equally brilliant is, WICKED – the most awarded new musical and Broadway’s number one show will once again thrill Melbourne at the Regent Theatre. This awe-inspiring and spectacular show is the untold story of the witches of Oz, starring Lucy Durack as Glinda and Jemma Rix as Elphaba, both reprising the roles which shot them to stardom during the original Australian tour.

Streets Ahead

Laneways and side streets defy stereotypes in Melbourne as they are home to some of the city’s best shopping, dining and of course street art. Uncovering the Amazing

Boutique Beats

Foodie Havens and Hubs

Melbourne’s rich culture has fostered a unique community of artists and designers that share their works of art on the walls and doors of the city’s famed laneways.

Shopping is a well practised pastime in Melbourne, and if you ask any local they will spill off a list of secret retail havens, many of which will call the city’s laneways home. Clusters of boutiques can be found in Russell Place (4), Degraves Street (5), Flinders Lane (6) and Crossley Street (7). But it is what lies between that is sure to surprise and delight Flinders Quarter (8), Royal Arcade (9) and the Block Arcade (10) deliver a stunning selection of jewellery, clothes and homeware stores.

Food in Melbourne is an art form and it is practised and perfected in the city laneways. Food precincts have been established in these small and bustling streets, with Meyers Place (11), Degraves Street (5) and Hardware Lane (12) at the forefront.

Light installations, interactive sound-scapes, suspended sculptures and miniature galleries continue to surprise and amaze visitors as they wander the colourful laneways and uncover this exciting and unique side to Melbourne. The famously named AC/DC Lane (1), Hoiser Lane (2) and Union Lane (3) all host ever-changing, vibrant patchworks of exciting artwork, that will have you mesmerised.

If you are looking for something a little different, pick up a piece from Signed and Numbered (5) in Degraves Street (5), who sell prints from local emerging artists all featuring this city’s eclectic edge.

Fast becoming the city’s hub of all things foodie is Flinders Lane (6), with new and daring restaurants, bars and cafés popping up on best eat lists regularly. With well established venues like Chin Chin (13) and newcomers Meatball and Wine Bar (14) consistently impressing diners, you are sure to add this buzzing strip to you favourites list as well. chinchinrestaurant.com.au meatballandwinebar.com.au
