BRETT CHYNOWETH The talent and passion of this born-andraised Melburnian have landed him an enviable role at one of the country’s most prestigious dance companies.

A

“ Each performance, no matter what setting, is an opportunity for me to be the best I can and to share something special with the audience,” he says. Brett now lives in the inner-city suburb of Collingwood and keeps busy working on multiple projects. When he’s not rehearsing for the Australian Ballet's The Merry Widow (from June 6 at Arts Centre Melbourne), he takes the opportunity to enjoy his favourite things about Melbourne. “ I love Melbourne because it has such variety. I can find a sense of cosiness and homeliness or explore a little and be enlightened by new experiences, fabulous food and a creative, European feel.”

fter trying his hand at a number of sports and hobbies as a child growing up in Melbourne’s south-east, it was dance that well and truly hooked Brett Chynoweth. What came next? Dreams of joining the prestigious Australian Ballet, of course. He was accepted into the Australian Ballet School, which he describes as his refuge from bullying, and rose through the ranks to graduate as dux with honours. His determination and desire to hone his craft is still evident today.

Public transport makes it easy to explore suburban Melbourne and its many hidden gems.

Eastside M Y OTH E R B ROTH E R , C A M B E RW E L L

Afternoon If you’re keen to venture past the boundaries of Melbourne’s CBD, the east side awaits with plenty of treats to uncover. Head to Flinders Street Station and catch any Lilydale, Belgrave or Alamein train to Camberwell Station. Take a short walk over to the Camberwell Marketplace and, tucked into a corner, you’ll find My Other Brother [586 Burke Road, Camberwell]. Delve into a delicious fried cauliflower and braised lamb salad or, if you’re after something sweet, try the scrumptious orange blossom hotcakes. When you’ve finished lunch, meander to Rivoli Cinema [200 Camberwell Road, Hawthorn East], stopping at the boutiques that strike your interest along the way. Locals love Rivoli for its retro, art deco exterior complete with neon lights, as well as its grand interior that will transport you to a time when attending a movie was a glamorous occasion. Grab your tickets and settle in for an afternoon at the flicks.

Evening When the credits roll, make a beeline towards Camberwell Junction and right in front of The Meat and Wine Co you’ll find tram stop 40. Hop on a route 70 or 75 tram towards the city and disembark at stop 35 for Choi’s Restaurant [186 Riversdale Road, Hawthorn], where you can treat yourself to contemporary Chinese fare. It’s not your runof-the-mill dumpling house, so prepare for something a with a little more opulence. Jump back on the tram outside Choi’s, and let route 70 (towards the city) take you to your delicious dessert. Hop off at Church Street (stop 11) and take a short walk along Swan Street to Gelato Messina [164 Swan Street, Richmond]. Try as many gelato and sorbet flavours as you like — the rotating offerings range from chocolate to blood orange — before committing to your favourite. When you’re ready to call it a night, head to Richmond Station and catch a train back towards Melbourne’s CBD.

awe-inspiring

architecture When you’ve been to Melbourne a few times, it’s easy to overlook the fascinating and heritage-rich surroundings. Here’s a peek at two of the city’s most striking structures.

FORUM MELBOURNE Built in 1929, Forum Melbourne has hosted many big names and been a place where many fond memories have been formed – particularly for anyone who attended their first gig at this Melbourne icon. Originally known as the State Theatre, the Forum was built in the atmospheric theatre style. This brought the outdoors in, with the ceiling painted to mimic a night sky and featuring a stage that wouldn’t be out of place in a royal courtyard. Its exterior, meanwhile, is an example of Moorish Revival architecture, with intricate patterns and domes that wouldn’t look out of place on a mosque. After a recent renovation, the Forum has been returned to its former glory. Look down in the foyer and you’ll see mosaic tiles, hidden since 1937, that were uncovered when carpet was pulled up. The best way to see the theatre’s full majesty is to book a ticket to a gig this winter. 154 Flinders Street forummelbourne.com.au

MANCHESTER UNITY BUILDING

WANT A BIT OF GUIDANCE?

Ask any Melburnian about the Manchester Unity Building and they may struggle to tell you where it is. Those who take notice of this incredible Gothic-style building, however, are likely to become mesmerised by its intricate details. It was built in 1932 as the corporate headquarters for Manchester Unity Group — a friendly society — and, at the time, it was the tallest building in Melbourne. Step inside the foyer and you’ll notice relief sculpture, representing Australian flora and fauna, primary industry and Indigenous Australia, high on its walls. Take note of the elaborate mosaic floors and impressive copper-plated lift doors that have remained almost untouched since the building’s opening. If you want to go behind the scenes, tours of this magnificent Melbourne landmark are available and include a meal at the onsite 1932 Cafe & Restaurant.

Explore more of Melbourne and learn about its historic buildings on a walking tour with Hidden Secrets Tours, Walks101 or MELTours, or at Open House Melbourne (28–29 July).
