DEGAS A TRUE VISIONARY If he were still alive Edgar Degas would be celebrating his 182nd birthday on 19 July this year.
Instead, his legacy will live on through Degas: A New Vision, this year’s Melbourne Winter Masterpiece at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). Degas was regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, and this world-first exhibition will showcase more than 200 works from this master of painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and photography.
retrospective of Degas in 30 years, the NGV is expecting it to be one of its biggest ever exhibitions, even bigger than 2015’s Masterpieces from the Hermitage, which saw 171,000 people come through the doors.
During your visit, you’ll see Degas’ most famous works, which celebrate the beauty of the human form in scenes from the office to the stage. Drawn from galleries in 13 countries, the exhibition includes his ballet rehearsal scenes for which he is well-known.

There are nearly 400,000 people of Greek heritage living in Australia, and Melbourne is home to many of them. Ben Northey Despite having a career that has spanned continents and some of the most prestigious establishments in orchestral music, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s associate conductor chair, Ben Northey, is a true footy-mad, coffee-drinking, food-loving Melburnian.
“I first conducted the MSO in 2003. It’s very special to work so closely with the orchestra of my home town. I love the city, I love the people, I love the people in the orchestra, and seeing how the orchestra enhances the city has been very special to me.” With the 2016 MSO calendar in full swing, Northey is – unsurprisingly – enthusiastic about the highlights still to come this year. “We’ve got a special series this year being held in the Melbourne Town Hall,” he says. “It’s presented in a slightly informal way, and it’s less intimidating than going along to one of the big series concerts at Hamer Hall.”
BEN’S MELBOURNE FAVOURITES: RESTAURANT I love Asian food, and Cookie [Level 1, 252 Swanston Street] has a very spicy menu. It’s a great place to bring people from out of town. BAR I love Gin Palace [10 Russell Place]. It often means you’ve G I N PA L AC E
been out too long if you end up there, but I’ve got very good memories of nights at Gin Palace, particularly after concerts. COFFEE I’m a big coffee snob; I’m a real Melburnian in that regard.
I get my beans from the Brunswick East Project [438–440 Lygon Street, Brunswick East], which is the home of Padre Coffee. WINTER ATTRACTION There’s nothing like rugging up on a cold winter’s night and braving the elements to go the MCG [Brunton Avenue, Richmond]. I have great affection for the Richmond Football Club, and it’s a very entertaining club to support; there’s never a dull moment. HIDDEN SECRET I love pho, and I’ve eaten it all over the world, including all over Melbourne, but the best I’ve ever had is in Preston at a place called Pho Hung [447 High Street, Preston].
