his year has already seen plenty of large-scale musicals come to Melbourne, but none will be bigger than Kinky Boots. Based on the 2005 film of the same name, this high-heeled hit musical adaptation features all-new music by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and is one of the most anticipated musicals to arrive on our shores in a long time.

/ MEET LOLA Callum Francis plays Lola, Kinky Boots’ show-stealing drag queen. He’s currently performing the show in London but took a break to chat with Melbourne Now. Can you tell us a bit about Lola? I don’t know where to start. Lola should be President – she's fun-loving, hugely accepting and an extremely strong man and woman. She's the kind of person you want at a party, but you would also want as a friend. Why did you want to be a part of the show? Charlie and Lola complement each other so much. As my good friend Killian Donnelly (Charlie in the original London cast) said to me, Charlie is the spine of the story – strong and certain – but Lola decorates that spine in glitter and sparkle. How excited are you to be bringing Kinky Boots to Melbourne? Since finding out about it, it’s been a roller coaster and I think that's only going to continue. I honestly can’t put into words what it means to be bringing the show Down Under – I'm truly grateful and beyond excited. How hard is it to get your feet into the boots? The boots are fitted to my feet so they are the comfiest they can be. That said, they are still six-inch heels!

MEET THE ROSE KEEPER Terry Freeman tends the world-famous roses at Flemington Racecourse. Here are a few of his top tips to a great day trackside. THE BEST TIME TO ARRIVE ON RACE DAY? I’d catch the train, and aim for about an hour before the first race. PRACTICAL OUTFIT TIPS? Wear a hat, even if you’re not used to wearing a hat! It’s Melbourne in November; you’d be amazed how many people walk out of Flemington looking very pink. It’s often the first full day people have spent outside since before winter! HANDBAG ESSENTIALS? Band-Aids to compete against those brand new shoes that have rubbed a foot the wrong way. FOOLPROOF METHOD OF PICKING A WINNER? I’ve picked the Cup winner only twice in 40 years, so I’m certainly not going to offer any advice! Usually the first thing people will do is put a line through my tip (laughs). POST-RACE DAY DRINKS? There’s a great little bar called Hihou on Flinders Lane. No one knows it’s there; you actually have to push a doorbell to get someone to let you in. It’s the perfect way to end the day.

MELBOURNE CUP CARNIVAL – 2016 CALENDAR 2 OCTOBER

Turnbull Stakes Day

Emirates Melbourne Cup Day

Crown Oaks Day

Gentlemen, step trackside in your finery and scope the form of some budding champions.

The first Tuesday of November is always the biggest day of the year, and 2016 will be no different.

Not just the traditional ‘ladies day’, but also when the national winner of Myer Fashions on the Field is announced.

Did you know? The Turnbull Stakes is considered one of the most important preparatory races for the Melbourne Cup.

Did you know? A record 122,736 people converged on Flemington in 2003, when Makybe Diva won her first of three Melbourne Cups.

Did you know? The official flower of Crown Oaks Day is the pink rose.

What to wear Lads, it’s a suit-and-tie kind of day. Put your best foot forward.

What to wear Ladies, team your frock with a bright lip colour and a yellow rose in your hair, and you’ll be so on-trend it hurts. For the gents, make a strong fashion statement by wearing a bold coloured suit augmented by contrasting accessories.

29 OCTOBER

AAMI Victoria Derby Day Arguably the highest-quality day of racing of the whole carnival, it’s a must for race-lovers. Did you know? The style benchmark is set on this day, with the start of Myer Fashions on the Field. What to wear Whether lady or gent, today is all about elegant black and white.

What to wear Your best dress, your best shoes, your best hat. This is your day to shine!

5 NOVEMBER

Emirates Stakes Day This is the most family-friendly day of the carnival, so bring the kids and let them revel in the atmosphere. Did you know? There are free activities and live entertainment for the kids, plus Fashions on the Field for littlies, which is likely the cutest thing you’ll witness all carnival. What to wear Combine style with comfort, because nobody wants to chase after a toddler in high heels. melbnow.com.au

DAV I D H O C K N E Y

MODERN MASTER A

He’s a living legend, so anyone who loves modern British art will want to see David Hockney, the NGV’s latest blockbuster exhibition.

At 78 years old, David Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century, and an important contributor to the country’s pop art movement during the 1960s. With six decades of work to draw from, this self-titled exhibition is truly multi-dimensional. Having studied at the Royal College of Art, a move to Los Angeles in the 1960s and an exploration of the city’s swimming pools bought him into the spotlight. His career, and his legacy, grew with the creation of his first ‘joiner’ in the early 1980s, an assemblage of Polaroid photographs laid out in a grid. As technological advancements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries took hold, Hockney was introduced to more opportunities to push the boundaries of art. He has held exhibitions in Paris and Toronto presenting paintings created using the Brushes app on an iPad, and has also painted the Yosemite National Park using the same medium. In David Hockney, examples of his earliest paintings can be seen alongside some of his more contemporary works, such as video artworks and iPad creations.

11 November 2016–13 March 2017, NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road Tickets $10–$26, Family tickets (2 adults and up to 3 children) $65 ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/david-hockney

As has become common with NGV’s major exhibitions, the gallery’s Friday Nights at NGV program will return this summer. With bands and artists to be announced, you’ll have the chance to get up close and personal with David Hockney after hours.

HOCKNEY HIGHLIGHTS The Jugglers will depict Hockney in a room full of jugglers across 18 screens. Bigger Trees Near Warter, his largest piece to date, is made up of 50 panels measuring more than 4.5 x 12 metres in size. You’re bound to see Self Portrait, 25 March 2012, No. 2 in promotional material about this exhibition.

Celebrity chef and restaurant entrepreneur George Calombaris is doing more than his quota to boost Melbourne’s reputation as the country’s culinary capital, having recently opened yet another gastronomical Greek tavern, this time in the city’s west. With his finger in a lot of pies (both metaphorically and literally), George is instantly recognisable as the energetic and likeable host of MasterChef, but he’s also a savvy businessman, father, author and subject of this year’s Archibald ‘Packing Room’ prize-winning portrait by Betina Fauvel-Ogden. Raised in the outer Melbourne suburb of Mulgrave, George’s strong work ethic and flair with food was quickly recognised at Box Hill Institute of TAFE and he subsequently won the prestigious Bonland scholarship in 1999.

GEORGE'S TIPS RESTAURANT: Vue de Monde – Shannon Bennett is a brilliant chef doing awesome things with food. COFFEE: The coffee at D.O.C. Espresso in Lygon Street is incredible. You stand up while you drink it and watch the world go by, then leave to go about your business. BAR: Lui Bar at The Rialto has a smashing drink list and tapas menu, as well as awesome views over the city. BUILDING: The Royal Mint (now the location of the Hellenic Museum) is one of the most beautiful in town.

Fast-forward 17 years and the successful chef owns an expanding restaurant empire, including The Press Club (the ‘jewel in the crown’), Gazi, Jimmy Grants, Hellenic Republic in Kew and Brunswick, and the new Hellenic Hotel in seaside Williamstown.

Spring is a great time to be – and eat – in Melbourne... there’s heaps happening with the Spring Racing Carnival; and the city is just buzzing.

“ The Hellenic Hotel is a remarkable 1909 building and former home of the Hobson’s Bay Hotel, and we’ve tried be respectful to its history – the DNA of the place,” George explains. “ The menu and atmosphere is homely and unpretentious. The style of food is traditional pub favourites with a modern Hellenic twist. We’re doing updated versions of 1970s favourites like oysters kilpatrick and pavlova.” Upstairs is a public bar and wide veranda where you can dine and drink alfresco style with views of the city. There's also a daily $15 meal special (think moussaka, beef stifado and roast chicken). If you’d prefer to eat on Williamstown Beach or in a park, there’s a take-away menu, too. “ Spring is a great time to be – and eat – in Melbourne. The weather and seasonal produce is light and bright, there’s heaps happening with the Spring Racing Carnival, and the city is just buzzing.”

Northcote Main strip: High Street Tram: Number 86 According to Australia’s performing rights association APRA AMCOS, Northcote is home to more songwriters than almost any other suburb in Australia (it’s just pipped by Brunswick). As a result, a night out on High Street is sure to be a musical adventure. Almost any night of the week, Northcote Social Club ( jump off the tram at stop 32) plays host to the best of local and international bands and performers. As the weather warms up, an excellent dinner option is Welcome to Thornbury, just a bit farther along at stop 36. Sample the best from Melbourne’s food trucks and wash it down with a thirst-quenching beverage or three, before hopping on the tram back to your hotel. Carlton Main strip: Lygon Street Tram: Number 1 or 8 It’s long been known as the heart of Melbourne’s Italian community, but these days Lygon Street is so much more. Jump off at tram stop 112 (corner Lygon and Elgin Streets) where you can find some of the best pasta in the street at DOC Espresso. Cheese lovers might like Milk the Cow, where you can choose from more than 150 types of fromage and have it paired with boutique wines. Follow whatever you choose with a tasty treat from Pidapipó Gelateria. Looking for a hit of culture? Browse the fantastic Readings bookstore, see an arthouse flick at Cinema Nova or buy tickets for a contemporary production at La Mama Theatre.

Bring the

M CG O PE N DAY

Kids Don’t drop the offspring with the in-laws before a weekend in Melbourne. If you plan your trip well a family holiday in the city can be the perfect getaway. Don’t miss your chance to enjoy the ultimate MCG experience. The ’G will open its gates and welcome the public on 2 October for the MCG Open Day. Have a kick on the hallowed turf, explore otherwise off-limits parts of the stadium, such as the player change rooms, and poke your head into the historic MCC Long Room. What’s more, it’s free!

Put your thinking cap on and work as a team at Exitus Escape Room. Aimed at those aged 13+, it’s adjacent to a bowling alley that will keep the fun going long after you’ve escaped!

From 2 September Melbourne Museum plays host to Biomedical Breakthroughs: A New View of You, which turns the microscope onto the extraordinary biology inside each of us. This immersive exhibition literally gets under the skin to explore how your body works and what happens when it doesn’t. Play a ‘space invaders’ game that demonstrates how your immune system fights off alien viruses, or try your hand at curing cancer with a molecule-spinner, the same computer technology that lab scientists use.

Girls' weekend  in the city

Ladies, pack your suitcase and best exploring shoes. The city is waiting for you this spring. Friday First things first; you’ll need a place to stay. If hotel rooms aren’t your thing, but you still want somewhere comfy and secure to leave your things and lounge about, check in to an apartment at Punthill Flinders Lane. The name Punthill is synonymous with quality apartment short-stays, and when you find yourself looking out onto one of the city’s most fashionable laneways, you’ll know you’ve started your Melbourne girls’ getaway in style. If you’ve got a hankering for something different for dinner, stroll a few blocks to Fonda Mexican, where you can get your fill of freshpressed tortillas and quesadillas. The only Spanish you’ll need to know is “dos margaritas mas, por favour”! No booking is required as the restaurant accepts walk-ins only. Afterwards, explore Melbourne’s world-famous laneways for a final drink or two. Glamp Cocktail Bar is quite unlike anything you’ve seen before – a fab cocktail bar that will transport you to the African savannah. You can leave your safari suit at home. Just settle in and enjoy a drink and some smooth tunes. If the weather calls for it, Section 8 is a perfect spot for an al fresco tipple. Drinks are served from a shipping container and punters take their seats in a crate-filled, concrete jungle. It might sound confronting, but it’s one of Melbourne’s most buzzing spots every Friday night. EASYSTAY STUDIO APARTMENTS

Saturday Plan the day ahead at Journal Cafe while enjoying a lazy, and excellent value, breakfast (think fruit compote, breakfast bruschetta or a range of toasted sourdough sandwiches). Cross the mighty Yarra River to Arts Centre Melbourne and check out the jaw-dropping collection of outfits worn by Kylie Minogue across decades of live performances at the Kylie On Stage exhibition (late September–22 January). If you need more fashion than Collins Street can offer, step out at the Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Once you’ve freshened up back at your apartment, hit the town for a night of dining and drinks at Melbourne favourite Chin Chin (no reservations required) and the Japanese-influenced Hihou. The name means ‘secret treasure’ and sprawled on low banquettes you’ll be glad you found it.

Easystay provides visitors to Melbourne with comfortable, valuefor-money accommodation in St Kilda, Melbourne’s beachside playground. Easystay Studio Apartments offer queen, twin, family studios and one-bedroom apartments in five locations in the heart of St Kilda. Close to the city, all apartments have free Wi-Fi. Melbourne’s West at its Best The suburbs of Werribee and Point Cook and their surrounds are home to some of the city’s most enticing attractions and a trailblazing new transport option. If you’re looking for an alternative part of the city to explore, there’s no better place than Melbourne’s west.

THE ZOO

W E R R I B E E O PE N R A N G E ZO O

Undoubtedly the most recognisable of the region’s visitor attractions is the Werribee Open Range Zoo. Nowhere else in the state can you climb aboard a safari truck and watch rhinos, ostriches and lions roam in their natural surroundings. It’s as close to an African adventure as you can get without leaving the country!

THE MANSION One of the best aspects of staying in this area is that the major attractions – like the Werribee Open Range Zoo and other highlights at the Werribee Park Precinct, including the Werribee Mansion and its glorious surrounds – are all just a few minutes’ drive away from each other. With the colours of spring exploding around you, the mansion grounds and neighbouring Victoria State Rose Garden are perfect spots for a romantic picnic. The 1870s mansion offers a glimpse back to different, simpler time. If you’re feeling particularly luxurious, spend the night at The Mansion Hotel & Spa.

THE FERRY While the Werribee Park Precinct is a simple half-hour drive to the city, and also very accessible via the Werribee train line (45 minutes from Werribee Station into Flinders Street Station), you can now catch a ferry as well! Launched in May, the unique Port Phillip Ferries service will take you from the sparkling new Wyndham Harbour to Docklands Harbour in a little more than an hour, for less than $4 each way. Feel the sea breeze in your hair as you gaze across Port Phillip Bay, then venture through the mouth of the Yarra River on your way to town.
