No Time for Horsing Around T HE N EWCO M ERS This year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival is bigger than ever, with two additional Carnival race days. The Sofitel Girls’ Day Out (12 September) celebrates the return of spring horse racing to Flemington, with ladies keen to dress up in their finest hats and heels as the horses gallop past. For those with an eye on the ponies though, Turnbull Stakes Day (4 October) showcases some of the finest thoroughbreds of the season testing their mettle. THE BIG FOUR AAMI Victoria Derby Day (31 October) is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious days of racing in Australasia, featuring the Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby. With a crowd decked out in black and white, it’s a day of tradition, when Flemington embodies a world of glamour and sophistication. It’s hard to top the main attraction though – Emirates Melbourne Cup Day (3 November), featuring the ‘race that stops a nation’, the Emirates Melbourne Cup. With more than 100,000 people trackside, it’s an opportunity to experience one of Australia’s most historic and iconic sporting moments. Australia’s largest outdoor fashion event, Crown Oaks Day (5 November), is traditionally Ladies’ Day and, as such, plays host to the Fashions on the Field finals. Rounding out the Carnival, Emirates Stakes Day (7 November) is a family day out. With an abundance of free activities available for children, it ensures a smile on every face.

A MOST

Fashionable Time BY DYLAN STEWART

Melbourne’s fashion scene comes to life at the Melbourne Cup Carnival and other race days across town during the season. With decades of style to draw on, designers are at the top of their game.

The story of Melbourne fashion is, in many ways, similar to the story of Melbourne in general. Many of the trends, styles and looks that have permeated into the culture have, at least in part, been reflections of European looks. As the city has matured over the past 30 to 40 years, the Melbourne fashion scene has come into its own, representing a diverse, forward-thinking population. The scene is brimming with local talent and many designers are establishing their own boutique labels for customers to enjoy. Melbourne designers are looking at new and innovative ways to present their products. In what’s become a significant trend, emerging designers are catering to shoppers who want a fashion ‘experience’, not just new clothes. Pop-up stores, bespoke services and in-store events mean that, even during spring, when Melbourne comes alive with the colour of horse racing, fashion-lovers celebrate the process of making a new purchase as much as they do when they wear it for the first time.

LOOKING GOOD

More than just a collection of stores and labels, Melbourne’s shopping precincts have everything for the ultimate retail experience. Being fashionable is more than wearing the right clothes – it’s a state of mind.

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week is a uniquely Melbourne event that showcases the city’s vibrancy through its distinctive program of fashion, shopping, entertainment and hospitality experiences. The event reinforces Melbourne’s status as the fashion capital of Australia and its global reputation as an innovative fashion and retail destination. If MSFW has you feeling a little extravagant, Myer offers a personal shopping service to help you choose all the right outfits for the season. At outlets across Melbourne, including the city’s flagship store at Bourke Street Mall, get dolled up with Cat Morrison, the resident personal shopper and stylist at Myer Melbourne. “It’s a great tool for everyone,” she says, “especially those who are time poor or who just want to polish and update their look but don’t know where to start.” Bookings can be arranged via email or phone and are available on weekends as well as late nights. For the modern man, a fine suit and a clean pair of shoes is just the start. To complete your outfit, look no further than Lord Coconut for bespoke men’s accessories sure to impress. The store is home to more than 500 individual items handmade by about 40 Australian-based jewellers, designers and artisans and, fitted out as something of a natural history museum, it’s an elegant experience for any discerning gent. Brett Morley This very modern milliner brings sophisticated style to the races. The Melbourne Cup Carnival brings out the best in Melbourne’s fashion scene, and nowhere is it more evident than on the city's most stylish heads. One man who knows this better than most is Elwoodbased milliner Brett Morley. “ I was always interested in fashion and design, and the move to millinery came about very organically. I had a salon in South Melbourne for six years, and decided it would be good to have some millinery in the store in the lead-up to the Melbourne Cup Carnival.” hile the city’s millinery set is relatively small, the W Melbourne Cup Carnival is its time to shine. But when all the hard work has been done and the pieces have been purchased, which race day is the best? “ Derby Day is probably my favourite because everyone looks amazing en masse in their monochromatic black and white,” says Morley. “Melbourne’s on the world stage, so no matter which day you attend, it’s the best time of year.”

For more of Brett’s designs, visit brettmorley.com or facebook.com/brettmorleymillinery. Brett also runs weekend millinery workshops for beginners from his Elwood home-studio starting at $250.

Brett’s Tips RESTAURANT: Two of my favourite restaurants in the city are Maha [21 Bond Street] for Middle Eastern food and Supernormal [180 Flinders Lane] for great Asian fusion meals. BAR: The Supper Club [1/161 Spring Street] is a great place for a drink, and I also like The Nelson in St Kilda [2/56 Acland Street, St Kilda].

AFL FINALS

Catch the Finals Fever The AFL reaches its high point during September, and this year it’s spilling over – in a big way – into October. Aussie Rules football is like a religion in Melbourne, and there’s no place better to experience a game than the mighty Melbourne Cricket Ground during the 2015 Toyota AFL Finals Series (11–26 September). Three weeks of intense combat will see heroes born and entertainment for all. Now taking place on a public holiday and incorporating a new route leading to the MCG itself, the AFL Grand Final Parade (2 October) will be unlike any that have come before. Of course, the main attraction is the 2015 Toyota AFL Grand Final (3 October),

where the nation’s two best teams face off for the ultimate prize, the AFL Premiership Cup. After the Grand Final, the MCG opens up for the annual (and free!) MCG Open Day (4 October). Touch the hallowed turf, visit the change rooms and gain rare access to parts of the stadium that are usually off limits. Melbourne Cricket Ground Brunton Avenue, Richmond mcg.org.au

QUEST HAWTHORN Quest Hawthorn has an edgy New York style interior. Located just 6km from Melbourne’s CBD, it’s 1 1 minutes by train to Flinders Street and 8 minutes to Richmond Station, the MCG, Rod Laver, Hisense Arenas and AAMI Park for the sports and entertainment lover. A: T: E: W:
