THE

W’S HAVE IT Despite their reputations as artistic heavyweights, Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei exist side by side in this groundbreaking exhibition.

Surveying the scope of both artists’ careers, the Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei exhibition will present more than 300 combined works, including immersive installations and a wide representation of paintings, sculpture, film, photography, publishing and social media. Housed in the most popular art gallery in Australia, the NGV International, there is space and time to explore not only the art, but also the lives of two of the most influential art figures of the past century. Developed in conjunction with the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, USA, and Ai himself, this exhibition will look at the significant influence of these two artists, as well as focus on the parallels and intersections of their careers. While the pair never physically met, Ai spent a great deal of time in New York studying Warhol’s practice. The timing of the exhibition is particularly interesting. Ai is currently the same age as Warhol was when he died – 58 years old – so for visitors to be able to compare the two artists’ careers side by side offers an extra element of intrigue to what is already sure to be an outstanding display. 11 December–24 April, NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road. Tickets $10–$26, Family Tickets $65 (2 adults and up to 3 children) ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/andy-warhol-ai-wei-wei

KEY WORKS Some of Warhol’s most iconic pieces, including paintings and silk-screens such as Campbell’s Soup, Mao, Elvis and his celebrity portraits, will be on display as part of Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei. Although his work might not be as familiar as Warhol’s, Ai, too, is showing some of his most important pieces, as well as new commissions, including installations from his Forever bicycles and Chandelier series.

BEHIND THE BAR How are Melbourne’s best summer drinks crafted? Dylan Stewart chats with a couple of the city’s best bartenders to find out.

TRISH BREW GIN PALACE — What’s your position at Gin Palace? They call me the bar manager, although I think of myself as more of a professional alcoholic – or at least a high-functioning one.

G I N PA L AC E

What’s a flagship drink at Gin Palace? Martinis, martinis, martinis.

What’s in it?

Five years, which I’m told is the equivalent of 33 dog years.

Gin (lots of), vermouth (little of) and generally three olives so people don’t starve to death.

What do you love about bartending?

How do you make it?

How long have you worked there?

It’s relatively straightforward, you get paid well(ish) and, for the first time since the colonisation of Australia, it’s a respectable profession.

Stirred over ice until very cold, then served up. (Not shaken, sorry Bond fans.)

Why do you think this drink is so popular?

Why should visitors to Melbourne head to Gin Palace this summer?

Martinis are more than a drink; they are the perfect partner. Strong and sophisticated, martinis are the epitome of decadence.

Stop by for some gin and tonics with extravagant garnishes. They are the new black.

How long have you worked there? Three years.

Where has your bartender history taken you? I have worked in every hospitality environment conceivable. From Michelinstarred restaurants to serious cocktail bars, not-so-serious dive bars, hotels and exciting, fun, multifaceted venues like Captain Baxter.

Why should visitors to Melbourne head to Captain Baxter this summer? The drinks and the view!

What’s a flagship drink at Captain Baxter? The Green Knoll Mojito.

What’s in it? It’s a variation on the classic with a little extra watermelon, green tea liqueur and a touch of almond syrup.

C A P TA I N BA X TE R

How do you make it? Muddle the lime, add the watermelon, mint, white rum, watermelon and green tea liqueurs and mix it up with lots of crushed ice.

John Kerr The mastermind behind the Myer Christmas windows opens up on this year’s theme.

Walking through the Stage One warehouse, the visual merchandising company creating the iconic Myer Christmas windows for the 21st year in 2015, there’s a sense of being afforded a glimpse into Santa’s workshop. Creative Director and Stage One owner, John Kerr, traverses the floorboards like a pro and looks at the characters and sets with fondness. An estimated 1.2 million people experience the windows each year. And this year’s theme is the Corinne Fenton book Little Dog and the Christmas Wish (10 November– 6 January). Set in Melbourne circa 1956, the first year of the Myer Christmas windows, Kerr lays out the basic storyline: “ Little Dog gets frightened by a thunderstorm on Christmas Eve. He jumps into a baker’s cart to the city and walks the streets of Melbourne. He passes the iconic buildings and even visits the Christmas windows! “ When I spotted the book, I just said ‘this is it’. It celebrates Melbourne, and given that 2015 is the 60th year of the windows, this book was just made for the windows!” The Myer Christmas windows are located at Myer Melbourne, 314-336 Bourke Street

I always seem to come home in the evening, so the view across the bridge tells you that you’re home. BUILDING: Manchester Unity Building [Corner Swanston and

TEN HOURS IN MELBOURNE Want to make the most of your afternoon and evening in Melbourne? Here’s our foolproof schedule for a romantic night down by the Yarra River.

2pm After checking into your hotel, spend the afternoon indulging in some retail therapy at Southgate. With fashion labels like American Rag and Ice Design, gift retailers like kikki.K and a few great places to get a coffee, there’s more than enough here to fill an afternoon. 4pm Head back to your hotel to drop off your new goodies. Change into your going-out clothes, because a night of food and culture awaits!

5pm From your table at Fatto Bar & Cantina gaze across the Yarra River towards the city as it basks in the late-afternoon sun. Aperitivo hour runs from 5pm until 7pm, so enjoy a refreshing drink with a delicious plate of Italian-inspired food as you soak up the rays. 7pm Be wowed at Arts Centre Melbourne as The Illusionists 1903 (2–10 January) takes to the stage. As the centrepiece of your night in Melbourne, this larger-than-life production will transport you to the golden age of magic.

ALSO PLAYING GEORGY GIRL This musical follows the story of The Seekers, one of Australia’s most loved bands of all time. From 15 December, Her Majesty’s Theatre, 219 Exhibition Street, georgygirlthemusical.com

CATS Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical arrives in Melbourne for a strictly limited time only. From 18 December, Regent Theatre, 191 Collins Street, catsthemusical.com/Australia

9pm You’re all dressed up and the night is still young, so find yourself a post-theatre drink for a chance to extend the summer evening. Ludlow Bar & Dining Room, a casual yet classy pub on Southbank, is a great option. If you’re feeling peckish, it dishes up stunning European food in the dining room, plus there’s a wide range of drinks, including a decent cocktail list. You’ll be living the cosmopolitan Melbourne lifestyle until late.
