MELBOURNE MARKETS No visit to Melbourne is complete without a trip to one of the markets either in or just outside the city centre. The Queen Victoria Market (open Tue and Thu-Sun) is a great place to grab a fresh picnic lunch or a souvenir or two. Across the Yarra, pick up some fresh oysters and the famous dim sims from South Melbourne Market (open Wed and Fri-Sun). For a more fashionable option, try your luck at St Kilda Esplanade Market (open Sun, 10am-4pm).

SHOPPING STRIPS If it’s a shopping strip you’re after, it’s hard to look past the Bourke Street Mall, a carfree strip lined on both sides with days’ worth of retail ideas. Alternatively, visit vibrant Chapel Street, one of the most visitor-friendly shopping precincts in all of Australia. From the Yarra River the strip runs for two and-a-half kilometres south through upmarket South Yarra, hip Prahran and up-and-coming Windsor, to Dandenong Road. Give yourself a couple of hours – or a whole day – to find out why Chapel Street is so popular all year-round. DINING

GET YOUR FILL

From fine dining to casual cuisine, the city has a wide range of food and drink options. Here are our top tips no matter what you’re looking for.

Sure, room service is a luxury in itself, but make the most of your nights in Melbourne and explore all the city’s dining scene has to offer.

For the indulgent meal: It’s perched on the 55th level of the Rialto Tower, so not only will you have a stunning view at Vue de Monde, but renowned chef Shannon Bennett will also give your tastebuds a modern French experience they’ll never forget. For the unique meal: Why go to Germany for Oktoberfest when you can experience it every day of the year in Melbourne? Munich Brauhaus brings to life a traditional Bavarian bierhaus, right here in the city. For the casual meal: In the heart of the city, The Grand Trailer Park Taverna is unlike anything else in Melbourne, bringing together burgers, shakes and cocktails

with a fun atmosphere. Take a seat in a retro caravan or out on the balcony. No reservations, walk-in only. For the unique meal: Melbourne loves its trams, and The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant pairs this iconic mode of transport with a seasonal menu and quality Australian wine list. Melbourne runs on coffee, and everyone you meet will have their favourite place to get a caffeine fix. Venture into one of Melbourne’s laneways, like Little Bourke Street, and discover Brother Baba Budan. It – as well as other places, like Dukes Coffee Roasters on Flinders Lane – are specialty coffee shops that whip up such delicious brews that they are often overflowing with Melburnians looking for a pick-me-up.

B ROTH E R BA BA B U DA N

If you really want to get off the beaten track, Patricia Coffee Brewers can be found squirrelled away behind the Malawi Consulate. It’s worth the adventure, and even if the place is standing room only, its coffee is brewed to perfection. Rinse your palate with a complimentary sparkling water, then grab a sweet treat and browse the newspaper. ONE COUPLE TWO DAYS

When you come to Melbourne,

DAY ONE

you want to fit in as much activity

Get your day off to the right start with a caffeine fix from Sensory Lab before discovering the graffiti on Union Lane en route to Bourke Street Mall. Delve into the Myer and David Jones department stores, or find something special in one of two giant European fashion retailers, H&M and Zara.

as you can. Shopping, dining, culture and pampering, a weekend getaway in Melbourne has it all. Here are some itinerary ideas.

TH E M E ATBA L L A N D W I N E BA R

After a delicious yum cha at Kum Den, in the heart of Melbourne’s Chinatown district, it’s time to be pampered. Miss Fox is a haven for relaxation, rejuvenation and reinvention for the ladies, while, for the other half of the species, Manhor was created to provide a complete grooming, styling and wellbeing experience. The Flinders Lane precinct is a hotspot for boutique Melbourne dining. Try the FrenchVietnamese sharing plates at low-lit Coda or head to The Meatball and Wine Bar where you’ll be served – you guessed it – sumptuous meatballs.

DAY TWO

No visit to St Kilda is complete without a stroll, and Acland Street takes you through the suburb’s heart. Pick up a traditional Polish cake or sweet treat from Monarch Cakes, where they’ve been using the same recipes from Eastern Europe for almost a century, before hopping on the 96 tram back to the city.

family adventure in two days

Head outdoors, start exploring and get busy on a fun-filled family weekend in Melbourne!

DAY ONE After picking up a deliciously sweet and portable breakfast from Waffle On, catch any tram heading south from Federation Square to Melbourne’s outdoor paradise, the Royal Botanic Gardens. Alternatively, stretch your legs and take the scenic route past the Yarra River rowing clubs, Sidney Myer Music Bowl and Government House before arriving at Ornamental Lake. If you or the kids are feeling adventurous, take a 30-minute guided tour on the lake with Punt Tours Melbourne. Settle back in an elegant wooden boat as your professional punter regales you with the history of and stories about the gardens.

Cross the Yarra River and meander along the north bank past Melbourne Park and Birrarung Marr, before ending up back at Federation Square and enjoying a pizza at Café Chinotto. After all that walking, it’s time to take a seat and there’s no better place to do it than on the City Circle Tram, which you can catch from the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets. Hop off wherever you fancy or just take in the sights and sounds of Melbourne in the afternoon. Get dinner from family-friendly restaurant, World Restaurant & Bar, located along Southbank, then catch the lift to the best view in town at Eureka Skydeck 88.

STEEPED IN HISTORY In 1879, what is perhaps Melbourne’s grandest building was constructed. The Royal Exhibition Building was home to the 1888 International Exhibition, the first Commonwealth Parliament of Australia and countless other exhibitions, shows and events. Now it can still be explored on non-event days through the guided tours that run at 2pm. Another much-loved Melbourne building, the Nicholas Building, can be found right in the heart of town, on the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Lane. Hidden

Treasures WHERE TO FIND… STREET ART You’ve seen it on postcards, websites and brochures, but Melbourne’s constantly evolving street art scene can’t be truly appreciated until seen in real life. Check out the hot spots in Hosier Lane and Rutledge Lane. Another colourful highlight is the bustling pedestrian-only Union Lane.

Melbourne is famous for its laneways, alleyways and arcades. When you’re exploring the city, get off the main streets and poke your head into the paths less travelled.

WHERE TO FIND… SHOPPING SECRETS Melbourne has some great all-weather shopping options, so rain, hail or shine there’s always somewhere to stay cool and dry. Since 1869 the Royal Arcade has been satisfying retail cravings, while offering a glimpse into the past with its Victorian-era design. Similarly, The Block Arcade was built in the 19th century and its mosaic tiled flooring, as well as charming stores, make it a mustsee for any visitor.

WHERE TO FIND… GREAT COFFEE Coffee is the city’s black gold, firing up its residents who then go on to tackle the day ahead. It’s not hard to find a café or hole in the wall where you can get your favourite long black or soy skinny cappuccino, but a few to look out for are League of Honest Coffee in the city’s northeast corner, Hardware Société in the heart of visitor-friendly Hardware Street, and the tiny Switchboard Café. My Melbourne With 1600 rooms spread across three hotels, Crown Melbourne is one of the largest single-site accommodation providers in the southern hemisphere. Ashleigh MacDonald, Chief Concierge at Crown Towers and member of renowned international concierge society Les Clefs d’Or, shares her recommendations for your stay. RESTAURANT: My favourite restaurant changes all the time. At the moment it’s probably Tonka. I love that place; I love the energy, the staff. If the crowd is lively and the staff are engaging, it’s going to be a good time. COFFEE: I like St Ali in South Melbourne. I can’t go past that place for great, great coffee and its breakfast is amazing too. It’s just in this little laneway with a roller door. The staff are easy-going and relaxed and the coffee’s good. VIEW: I really like the bar Siglo. The view isn’t high but the view over Parliament is beautiful. It’s a big, open space that’s still warm in winter. You’d never think that someone would want to sit there and stare at Parliament House until you’re there. WALK: My favourite walk would be through Fitzroy Gardens to St Patrick’s Cathedral. While Melbourne can be so cosmopolitan, that’s an area that can stand so still. SHOPPING: I love the arcades and laneways. I think everybody should have the chance to explore the laneway district of Melbourne. It’s different and it’s beautiful. TOURIST ATTRACTION EVERYONE SHOULD VISIT: Everybody should do the City Circle Tram. For people who come to Melbourne without a preconceived understanding of the city, I always say go and jump on the City Circle Tram. I can guarantee you’ll spend all day hopping on and off. It teaches me things every time I get on it. BEST WAY TO SPEND AN AFTERNOON: Lunch at Donovans and then drinks at St. Hotel or Metropol in St Kilda. Those places are lively, the people are cool, it’s super easy to get there from the city and the area is vibrant. C ROW N TOW E RS

OUTSIDE THE CITY

While there are countless places in the city centre where you can get your fill, here are a few ideas if you’d prefer to explore some of Melbourne’s suburbs. BREAKFAST Over the past few years, Collingwood has launched itself as one of the best dining destinations in Melbourne, and with cafés like Proud Mary dishing up excellent coffee and an all-day breakfast menu, it’s no surprise. Getting Here: Catch the 86 tram towards Bundoora RMIT and it’ll take you along Gertrude and Smith Streets, ground zero for Collingwood foodies. Proud Mary: 172 Oxford Street, Collingwood, proudmarycoffee.com.au

LUNCH The thriving village around Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, caters to locals, visitors and local Swinburne University students. Try Crabapple Kitchen for a Mediterranean-influenced lunch sure to satisfy even the most discerning of palates. It has a decent kid’s menu, too. Getting Here: Catch any train on the Belgrave or Lilydale lines and get off at Glenferrie Station, right in the heart of Hawthorn. DINNER The suburb of Windsor, on and around Chapel Street, is one of the most happening areas south of the Yarra River. Since opening in 2013, Saigon Sally has cemented itself as an authority on modern Vietnamese cuisine, and is sure to tantalise your tastebuds. Getting Here: Windsor Station is just four stops from Flinders Street Station on the Sandringham line. Saigon Sally’s just two blocks north of the station. Saigon Sally: 2 Duke Street, Windsor, saigonsally.com.au

LATE-NIGHT DRINKS When the sun goes down, there are few better places to enjoy Melbourne’s nightlife than its bayside playground, St Kilda. The St. Hotel, renovated in 2015, is a standout on buzzing Fitzroy Street, with a number of different spaces catering for casual drinks to a big night out. Getting Here: St Kilda is accessible via a number of tram routes from the city; try the 3, 16, 96 or 12. St. Hotel: 54 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, sthotel.com.au

LAZY AFTERNOON Watch the sun roll overhead at Shadowfax Wines, one of the closest vineyards to the city centre in the Werribee tourist precinct. Buy a bottle, sit outside or in the charming cellar door, and sip away the afternoon. Getting Here: It’s a 30-minute drive from the city centre down the Princes Freeway (M1). Exit at Duncans Road and follow K Road to the tourist precinct. Shadowfax Wines: K Road, Werribee, shadowfax.com.au

FAMILY-FRIENDLY FEED Take the kids to Williamstown on the other side of Port Phillip Bay. For a fun, family-friendly lunch or dinner, try Sam’s Boatshed. Tapas, oysters and woodfired pizzas are just a few of the dishes available, and there’s a great children’s menu as well. Getting Here: For a different travel method, Williamstown Ferries operates between Southgate and the Historic Seaport of Williamstown. Hourly departures leave between 10.30am and 4.30pm. Sam’s Boatshed: 3 Syme Street, Williamstown, samsboatshed.com.au Williamstown Ferries: williamstownferries.com.au

Round, Round, Get Around Whether you’re travelling to Melbourne or getting around town, here are a few tips to make your trip as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. GETTING HERE V/Line makes your journey to Melbourne simple. Just hop on board at your closest train or coach station and let your driver handle the ride. Sit back, enjoy the company of your travelling companions and, before you know it, you’ll be gliding into Southern Cross Station. If you prefer to drive, before you leave print directions to your hotel and, if you’re coming in via one of the CityLink toll roads (including EastLink), buy a 24-hour pass, weekend pass or Melbourne pass (for trips of up to 30 days). Sometimes it’s easier to fly to Melbourne, and with Tullamarine, Avalon and Essendon Airports all well connected to the city centre via taxi or shuttle bus, regional airlines like Rex make the trip to the city a dream. AROUND TOWN For a quick and easy guide on how to travel around Melbourne, use the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) Journey Planner. It can be used online and there’s a free app to also assist you with directions when you arrive. Tram travel in the Free Tram Zone (Melbourne’s CBD and Docklands) is – you guessed it – free, so you don’t need to use a myki card. You can also ride the iconic W-class free City Circle Tram (35) that will take you on a historic tour of Melbourne’s city centre. If you want to explore outside the city centre, you can buy a myki Visitor Value Pack or, if you already have a myki card, you can top it up at any train station or 7-Eleven outlets across the city. RedSpot is one of the most affordable and visitor-friendly car rental companies in Melbourne and is located in the heart of the city. Alternatively major taxi ranks are located throughout the city.
