Friendly local volunteers will motivate you with ideas on things to see and do, and directions on how to get around. City Ambassadors Dressed in their distinctive red uniforms, City Ambassadors provide a mobile information service in the city with information on shopping, events and how to get around. Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm and Sunday, noon to 3pm (excluding Good Friday and Christmas Day). Melbourne Greeter Service Free multilingual walking orientations of the city, conducted by trained volunteers. Orientations are conducted in English daily at 9.30am from the Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square (excluding Good Friday and Christmas Day). Melbourne Visitor Shuttle The shuttle is an easy way to see many of Melbourne’s attractions. Hop on and hop off at any of the 13 stops along the route. A round trip takes approximately 90 minutes and includes an informative on-board audio commentary. Operates daily every 30 minutes from 9.30am to 4.30pm (excluding Christmas Day). Note from 1 October 2013, a daily pass on the shuttle will cost $5 and children under the age of 10 will travel free. Getting Around Melbourne The easiest way to get from your ship at Station Pier to the city centre is by tram using a myki card. myki is Melbourne’s ticket to travel on the city’s trains, trams and buses. Follow these easy steps for a quick tram ride to the centre of Melbourne. 1. Pre-purchase a myki from the Public Transport Victoria counter located in the upper level foyer of the international terminal. 2. Board the Route 109 to Box Hill tram at the stop at the end of the pier. 3. Validate your ticket by touching your myki on one of the green myki readers on board the tram. Route 109 travels through Port Melbourne past the Crown Entertainment Complex. It crosses the Yarra River before turning right into Collins Street to take you into the heart of the city. Returning to Station Pier To return to Station Pier just board any west bound Route 109 tram to Port Melbourne at tram stops along Collins Street.* * Passengers in wheelchairs or who have access issues can board the tram easily at the end of the pier as well as various city locations. Free City Circle Tram The City Circle tram service provides a free and convenient way to get around central Melbourne. The burgundy and gold tram travels past major attractions and shops. See the Melbourne City Map in this guide for route details. Bus 109 – City Express A one-way shuttle bus to the city centre operates between 8am and 11.30am, for most cruise ships. This service runs express from the international terminal to the Arts Centre Melbourne on St Kilda Road. To board the bus, you must pre-purchase a myki from the Public Transport Victoria counter. Taxis Whether you want to go to the city centre or nearby St Kilda, Melbourne’s taxis will get you there. Their bright yellow colour makes them easy to spot. Taxi fares vary, so estimate the cost of your trip at taxi.vic.gov.au/fareestimator. Melbourne City Sightseeing The red hop on/hop off double decker bus will pick you up from the end of Station Pier and take you around some of Melbourne and St Kilda’s most recognised sights. Chadstone in Melbourne’s south east is the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere with over 530 stores. For tourists, free 30 minute shuttle bus transfers depart Melbourne’s city centre. You’ll find over 120 big name brands all under the one roof. Queen Victoria Market An historic landmark, and the largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere is a favourite institution for Melburnians. Situated at the top end of Elizabeth Street, the Queen Victoria Market bursts with fresh produce, international cuisine, a wondrous range of wares, clothing and souvenirs and is a must see for visitors. Melbourne’s Dining Melbourne’s food and wine scene is constantly evolving with new cafés, bars and restaurants opening in the city and its surrounding precincts on a weekly basis. Old dining stalwarts continue to raise the bar with high quality culinary experiences while new purveyors of food and wine challenge what, where and how people eat on a daily basis. Café Culture Italian heritage is a strong influence in Melbourne and Melburnians are passionate about coffee. You can find an expertly brewed coffee from one of the many great inner-city cafés. Head to Degraves Street or venture into one of the adjacent laneways and arcades to get a decent caffeine fix. Pelligrini’s Espresso Bar on Bourke Street or Brunetti in City Square are local institutions. For a cosy, bookish café experience settle in at Mr Tulk, on the sunny side of the State Library of Victoria. Multicultural Dining While Mediterranean and French influenced restaurants tend to be scattered around the city, for all the colours, variety and delicious flavours of Asia, take a stroll through Chinatown in Little Bourke Street. Savour award-winning delicacies at the Flower Drum, have yum cha at the Shark Fin Inn or try innovative south-east Asian influenced food at Gingerboy. If you have your heart set on tapas, many options are now available, from the famous MoVida ventures – in Hosier Lane and 500 Bourke Street – to smaller venues like Mamasita in Collins Street and taco trucks parked all around town. Fine Dining The appreciation for fine dining continues with Andrew McConnell’s latest venture, Moon Under Water, on Gertrude Street providing high-end dining experiences. It joins the ranks of highly acclaimed restaurants such as Jacques Reymond in Toorak, Ben Shewry’s Attica in Ripponlea and Shannon Bennett’s Vue De Monde, located on the 55th floor of the Rialto building. To sample some of Melbourne’s rich Italian heritage food try Grossi Florentino in Bourke Street. Culinary Hotspots St Kilda continues to be as popular for great food and wine experiences as it is for beachside rendezvous. Try the Stokehouse, which boasts a refurbished beachfront café and wander along Acland Street for a stop at local favourite Ciccolina. Melbourne’s Gertrude Street precinct in the inner city suburb of Fitzroy has established itself as a food-lovers haven. The eat street is dotted with a number of the city’s top food spots including Cutler & Co., Enoteca, De Clieu, Charcoal Lane, Belle’s Diner and The Everleigh. Federation Square, Flinders and Russell Street, Melbourne Koorie Connections - Altair Aboriginal owned and operated, this retail outlet is located within the Queen Victoria Market specialty shops. Parks & Gardens Melbourne’s gorgeous helping of spring, summer, autumn and winter make it a gardener’s joy. So it’s no surprise to see so much space in and around the city centre dedicated to some of the most beautiful and innovative parks and gardens in the land. Royal Botanic Gardens Top of the list with historic trees, gracious plantings and undulating lawns - it’s heaven on earth, especially for the botanically minded. The incredible variety of native and imported specimens is as fascinating as it is beautiful. Fitzroy Gardens Just east of the CBD are the Fitzroy Gardens, popular among picnickers, sightseers and photographers - and no wonder. Historic buildings nestle among the trees, belying the fact that a bustling metropolis is only a block away. Here you can escape the hustle and bustle without having to leave the city at all. Ideally your ship will be staying overnight or depart late at night to allow you to witness the penguin parade at dusk. 1½ - 2 hours from Melbourne The Great Ocean Road The Great Ocean Road winds westwards from the major regional city of Geelong to the South Australian border. One of the most visited stretches of road is the Port Campbell National Park, home to significant areas of native bushland and fauna. The coastline has been sculpted over millions of years to form a series of striking natural features. You can wander the boardwalks and paths at the Twelve Apostles, remarkable limestone rock stacks rising from the ocean, while further along, London Bridge is another amazing rock formation not to be missed. Experiencing the Great Ocean Road requires a minimum of two days/one night.
