LET’S DO LUNCH The name of this great lunch spot almost hints at the difficulty you may have choosing from its unique menu; Rice Paper Scissors offers satisfying Asian-fusion cuisine in a hip CBD diner. A short stroll away, Grand Trailer Park Taverna is blazing new trails in the burger department. With fillings piled high, bountiful sides and desserts that could be mains, generosity is definitely a feature here. +39 Pizzeria, with its heart in Naples but its restaurant in Little Bourke Street, brings traditional Italian cooking methods to Melbourne. Here, you won’t find anyone cutting carbs, unless it’s with a pizza slicer. DIVINE DINING When it comes to honouring traditional ingredients and methods, Melbourne knows Mexican. Mamasita, perched above Collins Street, is known for being the real deal when it comes to tacos, quesadillas and Mexican street food. Meanwhile, Vue de monde ventures to an entirely different gourmet realm. Award-winning chef Shannon Bennett uses classic French techniques to prepare native ingredients like emu eggs, kangaroo and Davidson plums. If Greek is more your style, book a table at GAZI and prepare to be wowed. Order plates of dips, mini souvlakis, slowroasted meats and hearty grain salads. L A N E WAYS + A RC A D E S DISCOVER UNION LANE AND ACDC LANE Turn off busy Bourke Street Mall to find Union Lane, which cuts a narrow, colourful path between skyscrapers to Little Collins Street. Stroll through and see an urban canvas that can change from day to day or even hour to hour. Decorating the walls are pop culture icons, bold political statements, mythical creatures and a tangle of colourful calligraphy. Don’t forget to look up, as some of the art stretches high beyond eye level. Not far away, ACDC Lane pays homage to the heroes of Aussie rock in name and attitude. Here, art that is daring, dark and edgy competes for space.

Explore the ever-changing landscape of Melbourne’s open-air galleries. On walls and buildings in the city’s laneways you can see the latest in stunning street art.

OUTDOOR GALLERIES AWAIT Like Melbourne’s seasons, the city's colourful streetscapes change regularly, offering a rotating display of talent, creativity and bold statements from some outstanding artists. Discovering street art is as easy as stepping onto the street and losing yourself in Melbourne’s laneways.

EXPLORE HOSIER LANE Hosier Lane has to be one of the most sought-after locations for street artists keen to find themselves a patch of wall. See if you can spot the work of Regan ‘Haha’ Tamanui — his signature style often uses up to 40 layers of stencilling. Up high, you’ll spot Adnate’s huge portrait of an Indigenous boy who overlooks Birrarung Marr. You won’t be able to help snapping a shot on your phone for Instagram.

We really enjoy walking and usually do a lot of bush walking, so we thought, ‘Why not? Let’s go spend some time in Melbourne.’ During the tour, we saw enough of the city to know what we want to explore more of and how to get the most from our time here. I was worried about the tour being too long for the kids, but the 2.5 hours just flew by. Our guide was such a sweetheart, and so good with the kids. I loved learning more about Melbourne — there’s definitely some unique history — and we’re all chocoholics too, so we were in heaven with all the samples. The guides are people who are homeless, or don’t have permanent accommodation, and they take you around and explain things from a totally different perspective. I thought it would be really uncomfortable, but it certainly wasn’t. It was really eye-opening, and it made us both think a lot about how we can see familiar things in a different way. IT’S family TIME Gather the kids for a long weekend away — or a break during the school holidays — and make memories on a trip to Melbourne.

DAY ONE

DAY TWO

Don’t even think about that long drive to town — relax on a V/Line train or bus then set up at Punthill Flinders Lane. Dump your bags and head to ArtVo. More than a gallery, this interactive experience allows your whole family to become part of the art. Hyper-realistic murals, designed like optical illusions, make it look as though you are in fantastical settings, meeting wild beasts and undertaking death-defying feats. The kids can go nuts with as many photos and selfies as they like. If that doesn’t wear them out, an afternoon of ice skating at nearby O’Brien Group Arena will. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, enjoy Italian delights at +39 Pizzeria or go for Thai at the playfully named Nine Elephants.

Take the number 86 tram to Gertrude Street and jump off at Sonido. The name is Spanish for ‘sound’, and the menu will be music to your ears. It serves a South American breakfast of arepas and hot chocolate to fuel the family for hours. Did you notice how close you are to Melbourne Museum? Make this your next stop for a day of family fun. There are galleries showing displays of everything from dinosaur skeletons to Indigenous artefacts, all telling the story of Victoria . After a big day, relax at Carlton Gardens while the kids run around on the lawn before checking out Brunetti, with its pizza slices, pasta and delectable pastries for dinner.

Have a bit of sleep in — it’s a holiday, after all — then head to Trunk Diner, with its extensive kids’ menu, for brekkie. After that, step back in time with a self-guided tour of Old Melbourne Goal. The kids will love participating in a live re-enactment of getting arrested! Next up, the Queen Victoria Market is a treasure trove, with everything from fresh produce to toys and fashion. There’s also an extensive food hall with plenty W E LCO M E of TOlunch TH O Roptions. N B U RY Spend the last part of the day enjoying the free Screen Worlds interactive exhibition at ACMI. Not only is it a lot of fun, the kids will learn something about what goes on behind the screens. Chinatown, with its many options for authentic cuisine, is just a stone’s throw away. The kids will get a kick out of Red China, with its touch-screen ordering system right at your table. When you finish your meal, stroll back to your hotel via the Yarra River, criss-crossing back and forth over the pedestrian bridges. At any time of year, Melbourne is beautiful after dark. In the morning, V/Line will get you back home. Just sit back, relax and have a nap on the way.

A PROFESSIONAL’S TAKE ON MELBOURNE’S HIDDEN GEMS Meet Anthony Szostak, Chief Concierge at Melbourne’s Marriott Hotel. Known for its world-class guest services and central location near Melbourne’s theatre district, the Marriott offers visitors a home away from home in the heart of the city. With 15 years’ experience as a concierge, Anthony is Marriott’s resident expert on Melbourne’s hidden gems. He shares his best recommendations for your stay.

RESTAURANT Our hotel is in a great location for restaurants. We are a twominute walk to Chinatown and the Greek Precinct. For something unique, an authentic bush tucker experience can be had at the Crafty Squire. There, you can sample kangaroo, wallaby, crocodile or emu and enjoy the very fine James Squire beers. COFFEE Melbourne Marriott makes a fantastic coffee, but outside of the hotel I like to recommend The League of Honest Coffee, just a short walk away. It boasts a very loyal following. FREEBIES I love Screen Worlds at ACMI. There are so many interactive things to play with, like the Matrix Jump, fun activities with obscure interactive shadows and the history of Australian TV. It’s perfect for families and film nuts. HIDDEN SECRET I love encouraging our guests to explore the Melbourne bar scene, where the best are hidden in graffiti-covered laneways. Places like Madame Brussels, Section 8, Romeo Lane and Berlin Bar always excite me. I often have guests giving me a groggy high-five the next day.

PR I N C E S S TH E ATR E

FAVOURITE FOR FAMILIES ArtVo in Docklands is great for families. It’s a gallery of life-size paintings and murals that have a 3D effect. Visitors can jump into the scene for captivating photos and selfies. All you need is a smartphone or camera, then let your imagination run wild. ACTIVITY FOR COUPLES Our hotel is in the heart of the theatre district, so dinner and a show at one of Melbourne’s beautiful theatres — the Princess, Her Majesty’s or the Regent — makes for a lovely evening.

GREAT FOR GROUPS I love recommending The Night Market. It has a fun, festive atmosphere with amazing food from around the world. The trick is to get there early to grab a seat and order your food before the lines get long, then relax and enjoy an evening of music and performances. RETAIL THERAPY I love the boutique stores of both The Block Arcade and Royal Arcade. There are so many hidden gems like Basement Discs and Australian By Design.

M A DA M E B RUS S E L S

EVENT When the Australian Open hits town I can’t help but get caught up in the atmosphere, even though I’m not actually a huge fan of tennis. I always recommend getting a ground pass on the first few days. You can enjoy entertainment, as well as get up close with some of the leading athletes in the world. BEST PHOTO OPPORTUNITY I always encourage early risers and guests who are struggling with jetlag to take a sunrise walk along the banks of the Yarra River. When the morning is still and quiet, guests almost always come back to show me a photo they’ve taken of hot air balloons flying overhead, with mirror reflections in the high-rise windows and the river. I think it really encapsulates this amazing city.

TH E N I G HT M A R K E T

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY ANOTHER DAY Many cities have similar things to see, do and taste, but Melbourne operates on a much grander level. I love making a difference to our guests’ stays. I love Melbourne and make it my goal every day to have our guests fall in love with the city. Every day is different and being a concierge in Melbourne adds to the thrill, as the city is always changing and truly is an event destination. M A R R I OT T H OTE L

NORTH SMITH STREET, FITZROY AND COLLINGWOOD Any time is gelato time and Gelato Messina has more than 40 flavours to keep you coming back for more. Of course, you can’t try just one, so ask about the top 10 flavour combinations for some inspiration. Make sure you get your retail fix at Happy Valley. This bookstore has all the eccentricities of a personal collection, because it is. Owner Chris Crouch has picked the very best across a vast range of genres. Take your mind for a wander, then stroll down to Mr Scruff’s, where there’s a lot to love about the modern Australian menu. The burgers are the centerpiece though, with a new creation featured every Tuesday.

EAST GLENFERRIE ROAD, HAWTHORN A first for Australia, Lido Cinemas operates both an eight-screen cinema complex and, in the warmer months, a rooftop cinema. Catch blockbusters, film festivals, classic or art house films here. Foodies flock to Hakata Gensuke, a high-quality ramen bar where you get to choose the firmness of your noodles. After lunch, stop by Homing Instincts. As the name suggests, it is primarily about homewares, but it also celebrates the unusual. Find all sorts of quirky and unique gifts at this charming emporium.

WEST UNION ROAD, ASCOT VALE Crumbs Organic Bakehouse is very unassuming and humble, yet the baked goods are exceptional. Nearby Ascot Vale Cellars boasts a range of local and imported beer, wine and spirits. Stop for a pint or to pick up a special gift. Also on Union Road, Two Byrds is a lovely fashion boutique that screams unique. As you walk this retail strip, remember to look down as you near the crossings. The sidewalk here features tributes to racing legends in a similar style to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, only these stars are the four-legged kind.

SOUTH CHURCH STREET, BRIGHTON It doesn’t matter what time you’re around because Brighton Soul Espresso is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. While you’re in Brighton, take advantage of the shopping experience. Women’s fashion and homewares feature strongly in this bayside suburb. The Wrapt Gift Co is your one-stop shop for beautiful gifts and oneof-a-kind jewellery. After all your hard work shopping, quench your thirst at Half Moon. The wine list spans 20 pages and many nations. With its indoor and outdoor spaces, it’s a great place to stop for a drink at any time of the year.

GETTING AROUND town When you’re on holiday, you want your journey to be smooth and enjoyable. Here are some tips to get you from A to B in the easiest way possible. GETTING HERE V/Line makes your journey to Melbourne simple. Just hop on board at your closest train or coach station and let your driver handle the ride. Sit back, enjoy the view and before you know it, you’ll be gliding into Southern Cross Station. Rather drive? If you’re coming in via one of the CityLink or EastLink toll roads, buy a 24-hour pass, weekend pass or Melbourne pass (for trips of up to 30 days). V/Line: vline.com.au CityLink: citylink.com.au EastLink: eastlink.com.au

CO L LI N S S TR E E T

GETTING AROUND To plan your journey around town and get real-time travel updates, download the PTV app or visit the Public Transport Victoria website. If you want to explore outside the city centre, you can buy a myki Explorer. This pack includes a ready-to-use myki card with one day’s unlimited travel on public transport, plus handy maps, a souvenir wallet and discounts to lots of Melbourne hotspots. If you already have a myki card, top it up at a huge range of shops (including all 7-Eleven stores), myki machines and station ticket offices. Tram travel in the Free Tram Zone (Melbourne’s CBD and Docklands) is — you guessed it — free, and you don’t need to use a myki card on trips that start and end within the zone. You can also ride the free W-class City Circle Tram (number 35) that will take you on a historic tour of Melbourne’s city centre. Hop on and off at will, with a complete circuit taking about an hour. Melbourne’s Night Network operates on Friday and Saturday nights, meaning that, no matter what time you want to call it a night, chances are there’ll be a tram, train or bus nearby to take you back to your accommodation. Enterprise Rent-A-Car is one of the most affordable and visitorfriendly car rental companies in Melbourne and it is conveniently located in the heart of the city on Little Collins Street. Drop by to get sorted with a car that’s the right size for your travel party and suitable for the terrain you’ll be driving through while sightseeing. USEFUL INFORMATION If you want more ideas on events, attractions and information on getting around Melbourne, seek out City of Melbourne’s visitor services for advice. At the Melbourne Visitor Information Centre (open daily, 9am to 6pm) in Federation Square, volunteers will point you in the right direction. If you find yourself east of the city centre, the Fitzroy Gardens Visitor Information Centre (open daily, 9am to 5pm) is a free information service for you to plan your next steps; it has free Wi-Fi and cafe facilities, too. Other helpful folk in the city are the friendly volunteers at Bourke Street Mall’s Melbourne Visitor Booth (open daily, 9am to 5pm), who provide free maps and information on shopping, attractions and events in Melbourne. When you are out and about, see if you can spot the City Ambassadors (Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and Sunday, noon to 3pm). They wear red uniforms, welcoming smiles and provide a mobile information service.
