We take strong academic programs, add bright minds, stir things up a bit, and serve the world. We’re uncommonly good at it. Consider what others are saying about Defiance College: Defiance is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement.

Colleges of Distinction’s guide selected

Defiance for exhibiting the four distinctions that make a college outstanding: engaged students, great teaching, a vibrant community, and successful outcomes. Defiance is included in the President’s

Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, recognized for

exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.

“Defiance College promotes an atmosphere of enthusiasm and excitement for in-depth learning, experiencing new things, and rising to new challenges. There are so many unique opportunities to experience and ways to get active on campus.”

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity prepares students to improve the human condition. Its program for student scholars shows Defiance students how to research and design projects to address a need somewhere in the world. Important elements of the McMaster School include: The Carolyn M. Small Honors Program gives students of any major the opportunity to enrich their education with honors courses, participation in honors symposia, and international travel; and Defiance College’s Service Leadership Program develops skills of leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and cultural awareness.

“I really like the small classes and the one-on-one interaction. It’s a lot better than sitting in a class with 200 people. The professors take the time to really care about you as an individual. They grade your paper and then talk it over with you to make sure you’re on the right track.”

The Hench Autism Studies Program presents students with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to act as peer mentors to teenagers with autism. This program gives Defiance students valuable lessons and amazing insight into the challenges faced by individuals with autism.

Practical experience that Defiance

students gain from internships, service projects, and leadership opportunities both home and abroad pack resumes with exactly the sort of job skills employers want most. A student-run, nonprofit organization called Project 701 provides opportunities for students to take their service involvement to new levels as project managers and leaders, learning how to run an organization. Student organizations sponsor great activities such as concerts, comedians, poetry slams, road trips, a dance marathon, and much more. There are organizations to fit your interests, from ecology to religion to music and politics. Catch the campus nightlife at McCann Lounge, home of the The Hive which buzzes with a TV lounge, grill lunch menu, snack bar, and late-night hours.

“The athletic training program was highly recommended to me. Coming here was the best decision I ever made. The academic programs are all very strong. If I could go back and choose over again, I would still choose Defiance.

“All of my professors know me on a first-name basis. I love the people here – the staff, the president’s office, everywhere. You know everybody, and it’s really good. It’s like a family. I need a family when I’m so far from my home in Jamaica. DC has become my American family.”
