Groups who would like to be part of the Webster Street Festival can still sign up until September 1st. The Webster Street Festival will run from 10 a.m. to the end of the Homecoming game.

for their groups, it is hoped that many will attend the “Celebrate DC” Dinner to represent their reunion group. Reunion members in attendance will be recognized. All other reunions are using the “Celebrate DC” Dinner as their primary reunion celebration event.

Tailgate Central is located in the parking lot of St. John UCC, accessible from behind the church. Forty spaces are available for those wanting to be close to the action, so make your reservations early.

Defiance Shopping

A number of local stores will be part of the Webster Street Festival with gift items, food and memorabilia. The DC Bookstore will have a booth at the festival and the Hubbard Hall store will be open as well.

Fun for the Whole Family

Keeping little ones happy and entertained is a big part of the Webster Street Festival. Children will have a ball at the carnival with games, inflatables, face painting, corn-hole games, and more.

Food and Beverage Tents

DC does provide the opportunity to purchase food and beverages at the Festival. Alcoholic beverages are available for sale with valid ID. No alcoholic beverages are allowed in the McMaster Center Complex or within the Coressel Stadium grounds during the Festival.

Corporate Tents

New this year is the opportunity for businesses to have a Homecoming corporate outing. Packages include tent, food, beverages and more. Contact Dave Plant at 419-7832572 or dplant@defiance.edu for details.

Childcare Available

(Registration is required.) Childcare is available Friday and Saturday, 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for 4 through 12 year olds, potty-trained. Cost is $5 per child, per hour. Childcare provided by the Close to Home Child Care Center run by alumna Darline Clemens. Fully licensed and offering the only conference care program in Northwest Ohio, CHCCC is using the facilities of St. John United Church of Christ so that your son/daughter will always be close at hand. Alumni Award Winners Dr. Floyd C. Knoop Alumni Citation for Academic Excellence

Dr. Floyd Knoop ’66 has had a distinguished career in teaching and research spanning more than 30 years. Since arriving at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha in 1975, Dr. Knoop has focused his teaching and research efforts in medical microbiology and immunology. He majored in biology at Defiance College, graduating in 1966. He earned a Master of Science degree in microbiology from the University of Dayton in 1969 and a Ph.D. in medical microbiology from the University of Tennessee Medical Center in 1974. Dr. Knoop was named full professor in 1992 and became Component I director in 1996. He and his wife, Pamela, are the parents of a daughter, Tiffany.

Charles D. Beard Alumni Achievement Award

A lifelong resident of Defiance, Charles D. Beard graduated from Defiance College in 1970 where he majored in elementary education. He earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Toledo in 1973 and took additional studies at Bowling Green State University and Ashland University. The bulk of his career was spent as an administrator in private and public school systems in Defiance. He is currently director of the Middle Childhood Education Program at Lourdes College in Sylvania. He entered public service in 1984 with election to Defiance City Council. From 1990 to 2006 he was Council President. Charlie and his wife, Sandy (Reineke) Beard, also a DC alumnus, are the parents of four adult children, Chelsea, Adam, Nathan and Natalie.

Dee Ann Balser Alumni Achievement Award

Dee Ann (Miller) Balser has spent her teaching career in Northwest Ohio schools. From 1967 to 1974, she taught at Edgerton Schools. She was employed at North Central Schools from 1980 to 1984, and since that time has been employed at Montpelier Schools. Her career has centered on music education, and her high school show choir has competed and performed all over the U.S. and Canada. She graduated from Defiance College in 1967 and has additional studies at Defiance, Drake University, Marygrove College, and the University of St. Thomas. Dee and her husband, Thomas, are the parents of a daughter, Christine Spieth.

Jeremy A. Ball Young Alumni Service Award

As a Defiance College student, Jeremy Ball developed a passion for service. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications in 2004, he incorporated that passion into his profession as capital campaign director and development manager for MAP Furniture Bank, providing free furniture to Columbus residents in need. In 2007, Jeremy was named administrative services manager for Big Lots Stores, Inc., in Columbus where he directs and manages five departments, directs charitable giving, and assists with corporate communications. Jeremy serves on the MAP Furniture Bank board of directors, the DC Alumni and Friends Network central Ohio leadership team, and the Columbus Young Professionals Presidents Council.

Hall of Fame INDUCTEES Cindy L. (Youtsey) Conner Hall of Fame

Cindy Conner excelled in cross country and track and field during her tenure as a student athlete at Defiance College. She lettered four years in cross country, was captain for three years, and was named Most Valuable Player in 1989, 1990 and 1991. As a distance runner in track and field, Cindy lettered four years and was captain two years. She was named Female Athlete of the Year in 1992. She was the top runner in cross country for three years and track distance leader four years.

David J. Scott Hall of Fame

A Defiance native, David Scott joined the Yellow Jackets as a member of the undefeated 1969 football team. He lettered three years in football and was a three-year starter at the linebacker position. He was named All Mid-Ohio Conference linebacker in 1970, All Hoosier-Buckeye Conference linebacker in 1971 and 1972, NAIA All-District linebacker in 1971 and 1972, team captain and team MVP in 1972. Dave also excelled in baseball, lettering for three years and starting at the catcher’s position for three years. After graduating from Defiance in 1973, he was an assistant coach in football and baseball at Columbus Whetstone High School and was head football coach at Riverdale High School.

Mark R. Shine Hall of Fame

Mark Shine played Yellow Jacket basketball under Coach Marv Hohenberger from 1970 to 1974, earning four varsity letters on championship teams. After graduating, Mark became a teacher and coach, first at Bellevue Schools where he was a junior high teacher, junior varsity and varsity basketball coach. His accomplishments at Bellevue include two league championships, four sectional championships and one district championship. He was named Northwest Ohio Coach of the Year in 1985. Since 1987 he has been at Bath High School where he coaches basketball.

Presidential Inauguration

Mark C. Gordon will be inaugurated as the 18th President of Defiance College on Thursday, October 8, 2009, during a ceremony in the Weaner Community Center beginning at 2:30 p.m. Before arriving at DC, President Gordon was dean of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law where he developed nationally recognized exemplary public service programs, a unique international approach, and curricular innovations focused on success in getting jobs for its students. The school’s enrollment nearly doubled during Gordon’s tenure as dean. President Gordon earned a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, a master’s degree in international affairs with a certificate from the Russian Institute from Columbia University School of International Affairs, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College at Columbia University. President Gordon and his wife, Anne, are the parents of two sons, Chris and Charlie.

Michael L. Wright Hall of Fame

Michael Wright graduated from Defiance College in 1972 where he studied business administration and economics. He played quarterback position on the football team for four years, lettering two of those years, and earning All-NAIA district honors. Mike was a three-year member of the track team, lettering all three years, and receiving All-League recognition. He held the school record in the 220-yard dash in 1970 and 1972 and currently holds the school record in the 440-relay, running as anchor.

Schauffler Legacy Award

Frannie Millward, Schauffler College, ’47, a Christian educator, took on the responsibilities of Minister of Outreach for the Church Street Ministries of Berea 24 years ago. This program cares for the needy of the Cuyahoga County area of Ohio. Frannie continues to serve on the Defiance College Schauffler Advisory Board She will present as part of the Schauffler Symposium on October 9.
