MISSION

DAVIS APPLIED TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE FOUNDATION The mission of the Davis Applied Technology College Foundation is to provide scholarships, equipment, and financial support to the College for technical education that promotes student development and economic growth.

AMY POWELL DENTAL ASSISTING

When Amy Powell realized she wanted to pursue dentistry, she calculated that DATC would help launch her career while saving her money and time. Amy was right—her dedication and a DATC scholarship made her goals more attainable.

As a high school senior, Amy completed the DATC Chairside Dental Hygiene Assistant program, then transitioned into the Dental Assisting Program. Now she’s pursuing a major in biology at Utah State University. Once she’s finished her degree, Amy plans to apply to dental school, and become an orthodontist. “I read a statistic that the average college student changes majors four times before second year,” Amy says. The DATC helped Amy be more deliberate about her goals. “The DATC gives you an opportunity to figure out what field you want to go into, so you’re not wasting money when you go to college .” 2

Letter from the FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT 2016 was another year of growth for Davis Applied Technology College (DATC) and the DATC Foundation. As the community and College grow, DATC’s vision of innovative leadership in delivering exceptional technical training is more important than ever. The Foundation plays a critical role in meeting the needs of our students and the community.

MICHAEL J. BOUWHUIS President

LLOYD B. CARR Foundation Board Chair

The Foundation responds to student needs by providing scholarships and raising money for continued growth. During Fiscal Year 2016, scholarships awarded to students increased 15%. Our scholarship recipients become committed, skilled employees. For example, this year DATC’s Surgical Technology students achieved a 100% pass rate on their national certification exam. That’s the kind of excellence employers expect from Davis Applied Technology College. Through fulfiling our mission in delivering exceptional training, we earn the community’s trust. The community then helps our institution to grow through its support and partnership.

We honor that trust. As we move forward, we plan to increase our fundraising revenue by 100%, identify student needs, and build our Foundation Board. Together, we will create a strong community that is prepared to meet the challenges of the future. We thank you for your continued support. We recognize that our efforts to improve students’ lives and sustain our community wouldn’t be possible without you.

INTERMOUNTAIN HEALTHCARE DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP Intermountain Healthcare takes seriously its mission to help people live the healthiest lives possible. As the communities it serves continue to grow – both in numbers and in diversity – Intermountain Healthcare feels that the caregivers required to meet healthcare needs should also reflect the various nations, religions, races, and languages of the community served.

As such, Intermountain Healthcare awarded a $25,000 grant in 2015 to establish a Diversity in Healthcare Career Scholarship Fund. This fund is intended to encourage diverse students to complete Davis Applied Technology College’s Practical Nurse program, and it also supports students who wish to continue their education with Weber State University’s Registered Nurse program on DATC campus. By supporting a more diverse workforce, Intermountain Healthcare will be more responsive to the needs of patients from different cultures. “Intermountain is grateful to DATC’s efforts to encourage people from diverse backgrounds to enter the healthcare field,” says Mikelle Moore, Vice President for Intermountain Healthcare Community Benefit. “We want our healthcare workforce to be a reflection of the people we are serving in our mission of helping people live the healthiest lives possible.”

JAVIER SANTOS PRACTICAL NURSE Sometimes, life can take unexpected turns. For Javier Santos, those surprising moments meant leaving his native Colombia (and its tropical climate), moving to Utah, and making a major career change. Javier is trained as a chemist. But when Javier’s first child was born prematurely, he was inspired by the nurses who cared for the entire family. Going back to school meant cutting back his work hours, which in turn made taking care of his family more difficult. That’s why receiving the Intermountain Diversity Scholarship meant so much to him.

“I’m really grateful and my family is grateful to DATC for this help.”

With plans to qualify as an RN from Weber State University, Javier recognizes that his understanding of Latin cultures will help future patients. Javier might never have guessed he’d end up as a nursing student in Utah, but those unexpected moments became an opportunity to help others. “We have to give back when we receive,” Javier says. 2 0 1 6 D a v i s A p p l i e d Te c h n o l o g y C o l l e g e

IN-KIND

EQUIPMENT DONATIONS MAKE A DIFFERENCE In-kind donations are vital to DATC. Through our Foundation, many of our industry partners donate or loan equipment and supplies to the College. These can range from materials, to engines, to machinery. The equipment donations ensure that students are trained on the latest equipment and technology and still allow the programs to stay within limited budgets. “The Arburg molding machine, donated by Merit Medical, is a good addition to the machines in our lab because we can use it for Insert Molding. A six axis robot combined with the Arburg Molding machine will allow us to be able to teach the RJG Master Molder Course.” – Jonathan George, Plastic Injection Molding Technology Instructor

COMPOSITE MATERIALS “The materials donated by Orbital ATK are used in industry, and by receiving these donations, our students get used to hands-on training using real industry materials. These materials are often too expensive for the Composite Materials Technology program to purchase on its own. Without these donations, students wouldn’t be able to learn on industry-standard materials.” – Wes Hobbs, Composite Materials Technology Instructor

Through scholarships, the DATC Foundation gives students opportunities they may not be able to access on their own. More than half of DATC students are within the low to low-medium income bracket, making financial assistance an important part of their education.

The Foundation thanks our donors. Because of your generosity, graduating with a technical education certificate becomes possible for many students who can’t afford to pay tuition on their own.

“I’m a non-traditional student living with my parents. I support myself, so my scholarships help me to educate myself in something I love to do.” – Alison Williams

COMMUNITY RECOGNITION LUNCHEON Haven J. Barlow honored as first recipient of the DATC Legacy Award

Haven J. Barlow has a knack for appearing when opportunity knocks. As the first recipient of Davis Applied Technology College’s Legacy Award, he humbly downplayed his achievements at the College’s Community Recognition Luncheon, held Thursday, May 12. “Anyone could have done what I did,” he said. “I was just in the right place at the right time.”

Luckily for DATC, Haven knew how to take advantage of those opportunities. As a member of the Utah State Legislature for 42 consecutive years, Haven sponsored many bills to advance education in Utah, not the least of which was the creation of DATC’s predecessor, Davis Applied Vocational Center, in 1978. Haven also led the effort to purchase land where DATC stands today. Haven also led Weber State University’s transition to a four-year university, helped open Hill Aerospace Museum, Antelope State Park, Utah Botanical Center, and various other educational institutions.

“Anyone could have done what I did. I was just in the right place at the right time.” – Haven J. Barlow –

DATC’s president, Michael J. Bouwhuis, refers to Haven as the godfather of Applied Technology Colleges, and DATC clearly holds a special place in Haven’s heart. He has been on the Foundation Board since its inception, and has helped secure funding for the Roy W. and Elizabeth E. Simmons Building and the Haven J. and Bonnie Rae Barlow Building. Alanna Wilson, NASA scholarship recipient and founder of the Single Parent Scholarship Fund, also spoke at the event. Other honorees included:

• Davis Hospital and Medical Center, Business Partner of the Year • Weber State University, Education Partner of the Year

• Senator Jerry W. Stevenson, Community Advocate of the Year. 2 0 1 6 D a v i s A p p l i e d Te c h n o l o g y C o l l e g e F o u n d a t i o n

DATC FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT Davis Applied Technology College hosted its Annual Golf Tournament on July 29, 2015, at Bountiful Ridge Gold Course. Attended by 144 players, the tournament brought together DATC Foundation members and corporate sponsors to enjoy a game of golf and to raise money.

“Thanks to our sponsors and teams who were so generous,” says Foundation Chair Lloyd Carr of Carr Printing, “we raised over $40,000 to provide scholarships to qualified students.” Seventeen major sponsors donated to this year’s tournament, including signature tournament sponsor Structural Steel & Plate Fabrication (SS&PF). The golfers enjoyed breakfast provided by Kellogg’s and lunch provided by Texas Roadhouse. Ed Kenley Ford provided Hole-in-one contest cars. This year’s tournament honored the Foundation’s tradition of raising thousands of dollars that directly benefit DATC students, and the Foundation hopes next year will be even better. The next tournament will be held July 26, 2017. We invite you to support the event as a participant or sponsor. For more information, contact the Foundation Office at 801-593-2374 or datc.foundation@datc.edu. or visit datc.edu/golf.

ALLIED HEALTH BUILDING For nearly 40 years, the DATC has been a part of the tradition of caring in Davis County. Through our Allied Health programs, we train the students who become your caregivers. Our students will save lives and provide healing, and recovery to your family and our community. The population is rapidly growing, and so is the demand for quality caregivers. With your help, the DATC will build the future of Davis County healthcare. It will start with a new Allied Health Building that will give students the space and technology they need to become the best caregivers possible. Join us as we invest not just in a place, but in the next generation of caregivers; those who will make it their life’s work to turn our emergency rooms, hospitals, and clinics into places of healing, and recovery for you and your loved ones.
