come here not to make fun of Justin Bieber — the kid’s going to be here in a few months at the Ford Center, and I don’t want his thugs busting down the doors of LOOKatOKC World Headquarters and pummeling me into goulash. I’m sure he’s a fine talent and Usher Raymond had every good reason to sign Biebs to his fledgling label, undoubtedly seeing him as the perfect ink for printing untold rolls of crisp cash. But at the risk of angering our young ruler and his theoretical hired muscle, let’s wonder aloud (well, loudly on paper) at the prospect of the February 2011 documentary that will give you Bieber Fever in at least one more dimension than is completely necessary. First of all, it seemed a little presumptuous when the first thing Bieber released was called “My World.” Think about that for a moment. I have a young son starting kindergarten this month and I’m used to outsized and inappropriate notions of ownership, but in 2009, Bieber wasn’t happy with “My Cookie” or “My Blanket” or “My Adidas,” he went for the biggest possessive grab possible without venturing into the cold expanse of the universe. That’s right, if you don’t like the way the world is running, you might want to address your concerns not to the White House or the United Nations, but to Justin Bieber. Then, just four months later, he insisted that his world wasn’t sufficiently streamlined and user-friendly to fit his needs and rolled out “My World 2.0,” because in this fast-paced world that is Justin Bieber’s, you don’t want to be running the old program. Did you notice how he realigned the tectonic plates this time? Now that flight from Taipei to Los Angeles is three hours shorter. But then the news arrived that there would be a documentary about our new owner in magical 3-D, and that it would be helmed by none other than Davis Guggenheim, the man who directed “An Inconvenient Truth.” That is the Al Gore film about global warming — global, which means it is happening on Justin Bieber’s World 2.0, so again, please send your concerns to the proper address. But then Guggenheim dropped out of the project, possibly because after climate change and BY GEORGE LANG President Barack Obama’s campaign bio film, the prospect of tackling our soulful global overlord was just too immense. So now it will be handled by Jon Chu, director of “Step Up 3-D.” I’ve seen “Step Up 3-D,” because it’s my job, and I truly LOOKATOKC EDITOR worry that, while Chu was mildly capable of capturing the drama surrounding Moose, Kid Darkness and the Santiago Twins, GLANG@OPUBCO.COM BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/STATICBLOG and some wicked popping and locking, I’m not certain he is ready for this global initiative. After all, the world is at stake. Justin Bieber’s World. 2.0.

‘What did you think of the show?’ Finding a way to answer this question honestly would give the incredible musicians in Oklahoma an extra push

I

t scares me when a concert ends, but not because the shows I see are inside seedy bars and dilapidated venues on Western Avenue. My fear results from a question I often hear from bands. “What did you think of the show, honestly?” Not an easy question. Sometimes I say “that rocked” because the words are perpetually programmed to exit my lips, my ears are buzzing and the phrase is an acceptable answer for most questions asked at concerts. But most of the time I try to be honest and say what was bad and good. I think a generic positive response is what most concertgoers stick with when posed with this query. Rarely do I hear about harsh reviews given to a local musician’s face. People don’t often discuss how a local band performed. This should change, but it won’t be easy. It’s scary and hard to be honest. People usually tell the truth if the question involves how they feel about someone’s boyfriend or how bad the latest Julia Roberts movie really is. I’ve heard people lay into Nickelback as if they were as threatening as a zombie apocalypse. But why don’t patrons weigh in on local acts with the same amount of ferocity? Sure, it’s difficult to perform in front of an audience. I’ve had four years of trombone recitals to teach me that lesson, but a lot of yelling from my music teachers made me want to improve (until I learned you had to march in a band). I’m all for an independent spirit flourishing, but everyone needs to be brought down from his pedestal once in awhile. I think it would be healthy for some local bands to hear someone say they choked and presented valid reasons why. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. If everyone paid half as much attention to a local artist as they did to a college quarterback then that musician would be selling gold records in six months. I bring this up because I’m seeing a great emergence of incredible music in Oklahoma. We’re not lacking in strong talent, but think how helpful an extra push could be.

Helping city grow as simple as taking a walk Art walks have found a way to thrive in Oklahoma City, giving local artists some much needed attention

I

realize that the Historic Paseo Arts District has had the First Friday Gallery Walk for awhile now, but I attended my first one this month. Contrary to the name, it’s also on Saturday as well. I went on 7:30 Friday, and it was packed with people interested in buying art. I went to check out a new exhibit featuring art painted by animals from the OKC Zoo. As you can tell by what I just said, there is no limit to the artwork they feature. Sixty artists and more than 17 galleries participate each month, and if you’ve been to The Paseo, you will know that it’s all within about two or three blocks. There was a man on the corner of the street singing The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields” hoping for donations, which reminded me of London with all the street performers. Free wine was aplenty with Tidal School Winery giving out free samples and about four art opening receptions at the “Walk.” My favorite part was going to Paseo Grill for a nice Cucumber Club Special and sitting on the patio watching the chaos. It’s a relaxing chaos if you can make sense of that oxymoron. I ended up with a couple of business cards in my pocket, a phone number for a friend and belly full of cocktails. I think I’ll try that again Sept. 3. The Paseo set precedence for art

walks in Oklahoma City because soon after the Plaza District better known as LIVE on the Plaza, Second Fridays began. You can check out performing artists, live musicians, film screenings as well as some visual art. The Plaza District is so new to the scene; it’s amazing to watch the speed in which

its businesses expand. LIVE on the Plaza is also a chance to view new businesses such as Collected Thread, WarPaint Clothing and DNA Gallery among others. There’s a Guatemalan restaurant that I’m dying to try called Tienda Guatemala. Authentic food, great atmosphere and superb company

make for a perfect night. Going farther south on the list and location of monthly art walks brings me to Norman for the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art. Each month a CART Trolley ride takes people to different areas of Norman to check out the art, musical and even circus entertainment. Encompassing a huge part of Norman, it includes the Downtown Arts District, Campus Corner and parts of the University of Oklahoma campus. 2ndfridaynorman.com has a video that features an example of what you can expect. The latest video shows an artist creating an installation made out of Wimgo beach balls. As an OU alum, I can attest to the major creative types that inhabit the streets of Norman so you can probably expect the same creativity to be shown at the art walks. Art walks are nothing new, but watching them thrive in Oklahoma City and beyond is motivating in so many ways. Not only do they give artists another avenue to express their skills, there’s also a massive appeal by citizens to purchase from local artists. In my world supporting the local scene no matter the genre is the way each person can help a city grow. I’m glad I experienced the Paseo Art Walk. It’s a breath of fresh air.

W

hether striking an awards show pose in a dazzling, cleavagebaring gown or cruising an Oklahoma lake in camouflage overalls, country girl Miranda Lambert knows how to haul in the big catches. At the April 18 Academy of Country Music Awards, the country music star personified Vegas glitz with her orangecarpet arrival in a low-cut metallic sapphire Pamella Roland gown. The blond spitfire not only joined pal Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley and rocker John Fogerty in belting out “Travelin’ Band” during the show’s rollicking opening number, she stayed in the spotlight by performing solo and snagging three trophies. There’s a part of me that’s a girly-girl, too, though. But I think I can fit in with the guys,” Lambert said in an April 2010 phone interview. Since March, Lambert has been taking the different facets of her colorful personality, along with a revolving stable of country boys, on the road for her “Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars” tour. and Dunn ‘Last Rodeo Tour.’ After touring with country superstars such as Paisley and Kenny Chesney, the singer-songwriter felt ready to step into the headliner role in support of her critically acclaimed third album, “Revolution.” “It was a little scary at first, ‘cause I wasn’t sure how the turnout was going to be, and ... it was like the pressure’s all on us now. But it’s been awesome,” she said. “It kind of shows that you’re moving up a level. We’ve been out for five years now on other people’s tours, and it’s just nice to be able to, like, put to the test everything we’ve learned and do it on our own.” With her recent successes, Lambert has become a key player in a shifting dynamic in the genre. She recently notched a No. 1 single “The

House That Built Me,” and played the huge Bonnaroo Music Festival this summer. Along with Shelton, Bryan and trio Lady Antebellum, she represents a new generation of country stars who maintain close friendships even as they vie for chart position. These young guns dominated the ACM Awards. The members of Lady A, who befriended Lambert last summer on Chesney’s tour, said in interviews they were rooting for their pal’s “Revolution” to win album of the year over their own self-titled debut. The trio traveled last year to Tishomingo for a songwriting confab with Shelton and Lambert, which yielded the “Revolution” cut “Love Song.” Along with the album of the year

title, Lambert also earned top female vocalist and video of the year for “White Liar.” Rotating tender ballads and feisty anthems, “Revolution” became her second ACM album of the year; she won the trophy in 2008 with “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” “It’s really nerve-racking every time you put out an album, because you’re just hoping that people love it as much as you do. ‘Revolution,’ really, I took a lot of time off and stayed at the farm and wrote for the record and took a lot of time and concentrated on what I wanted to say. So this is the thing I’m most proud of musically,” she said. “It really is a part of who I am. You know, I’m very honest in this record and in my music, period,” Lambert said. “So I feel like when people accept that, they accept me.”

“THE ORCHARD” RA RA RIOT August 18 - September 4

14

Ra Ra Riot’s second album, “The Orchard,” finds the New York band filing off some of the rough edges found on 2008’s “The Rhumb Line” and emerging as an indie-orchestral Fleetwood Mac: The melodies are brighter and lighter, the arrangements more spacious and less claustrophobic. There seems to be little on the band’s mind beyond the politics of love, but when Ra Ra Riot is delivering such easy-on-the-ears beauty this time out, substance might only get in the way. This is the first time the band has been entirely without the lyrical gifts of late drummer John Pike, and while the depth of songs such as “Each Year” is missed, singer Wes Miles fills in this unfortunate blank with gorgeous pop music on the first single, “Too Dramatic,” and the simmering “Foolish.” Producers Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and Rostam Batmanglij push cellist Alexandra Lawn and violinist Rebecca Zeller forward in the mix, while Milo Bonacci’s guitar telegraphs arpeggios just below the surface. Lawn also comes to the fore as vocalist on “You and I Know,” the point where the Mac comparison is most apt, evoking the dreamier moments of that band’s post-”Rumours” period. Not everything in this transitional album works so beautifully (bassist Mathieu Santos’ overlong and repetitive “Massachusetts” sounds like a rejected Vampire Weekend track). But most of “The Orchard” works as warm-weather romantic pop. Ra Ra Riot achieves it with consummate — George Lang, LookatOKC editor beauty and an ear for details.

ime management plays a key role in The Budos Band’s recording regimen, and even if the ninepiece instrumental group had the resources to play around for months in the studio, baritone sax player Jared Tankel said the band prefers to bang it out live and commit it to tape before anything can get stale. “We’re a live group, so there’s no way we’re going to go in and do it piece by piece,” Tankel said in a recent phone interview. “Overall, we just play it live — that’s our best performance. And there’s just the very practical matter: our time schedules. Our work schedules dictate that we get it all in on a weekend. Because guys have day jobs and stuff,

we’re not able to stretch it out over a continuous week.” Most of the Budos Band is made up of public school teachers with a fondness for Afrobeat rhythms and horn-laden gritty funk, and the group’s activity is largely dictated by the Staten Island, N.Y. school calendar. So earlier this year, Tankel and the rest of the Budos Band entered the studio with Daptone Records chief Bosco Mann and laid down “The Budos Band III” without cutting class. “We started on Friday evening and finished by Sunday, late afternoon,” said Tankel who, as a See Budos on Page 34

‘Scott Pilgrim’ takes on the big screen and wins

“S

cott Pilgrim vs. the World” is a high-energy romantic comedy for the attention-deficit generation, and while it has its share of flaws, it’s entertaining and funny throughout. Directed by Edgar Wright (“Shaun of the Dead”), “Scott Pilgrim” stars Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, “Rating: Awesome” a text box informs us. Scott is the 23-year-old slacker bassist of Toronto band Sex Bob-omb, who is dating a high schooler, much to the dismay of his friends. Scott’s still distressed over a previous bad breakup and is using the relatively simple relationship his “fake

high school girlfriend” provides to attempt to heal. But then, as the movie begins to get all the more surreal, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a delivery person, begins appearing in Scott’s dreams. Scott falls for her, but to date her, he must defeat her seven evil exes. The movie then becomes even more frenzied, as Wright uses techniques from video games, anime and even Bollywood musicals to create hyperactive action sequences. Wright also pulls several techniques directly from the graphic novels on which “Scott Pilgrim” is based, a six-volume set by Canadian Bryan O’Malley.

Scott uses skill and guile to combat the exes, each time learning more about his girlfriend and himself. But will what he’s learned be enough when he must face Ramona’s final evil ex? Excellent in supporting roles are Kieran Culkin as Scott’s gay roommate Wallace Wells and Anna Kendrick as Scott’s sister, Stacey. Ellen Wong is fantastic in her first feature film role as the high school girlfriend, Knives Chau. The music, including songs composed by Beck, is excellent throughout. The main problem with “Scott Pilgrim” is that the film is so frantic that it’s hard to get a feel for the relationship at the heart of it. Without much time to

develop, the reason for all these battles kind of gets lost in the shuffle. Cera is a slightly different Scott Pilgrim from the books, but he makes the character his own. Perhaps anticipating some amount of comparison, Wright has a character mention in a crowd scene that the comics are better. And that’s true — the graphic novels on which “Scott Pilgrim” is based are transcendent, whereas the movie is simply entertaining and visually inventive. Nonetheless, “Pilgrim” is a fun movie with many great moments and certainly never bores its audience. — Matt Price, Features Editor

‘Eat Pray Love’ will leave you unbearably sad

T

he Liz Gilbert character isn’t likable. She doesn’t try to be for about two hours in “Eat Pray Love,” a romantic dramedy based on Gilbert’s celebrated travel memoir. However, something must have gotten lost in translation. Julia Roberts plays Gilbert, a restless divorcee and travel writer who desires nothing more than to be unnerved from reality and to discover a life worth living. In a desperate attempt at escapism, she follows the advice of an aged medicine man named Ketut and begins an adventure that’s separated into three courses

during one year. Gilbert plans to eat in Italy, pray in India and find love in Bali. This recipe seems simple enough, but the film is missing key ingredients. Each location is beautiful and is shot in a way that makes each resemble shiny travel brochures, but the places are only as interesting as the people who inhabit them. It’s simply not engaging to watch Gilbert eat. After her third fancy meal in 10 minutes, the film becomes as satisfying as watching the Food Network when you’re hungry. “Eat Pray Love” is easy to view but nerve-wracking to sit through. The

film’s concept celebrates blindness. Gilbert closes her eyes and sacrifices her money and time to find vague enlightenment when she had a tolerable life in New York City. This is similar to the plight of a blindfolded child batting toward a pinata at a birthday party. However, this movie is far from a delightful celebration. Director Ryan Murphy is most notable for helming the popular TV shows “Nip/Tuck” and “Glee.” He can fit a lot of dynamic action into a half-hour, but the events in this film are uneven. Before “Eat Pray Love” settles down and introduces interesting elements, Gilbert

shoves off to another destination to act unbearably sad. However, there’s an upside to the places she visits. Richard Jenkins (“Step Brothers”) and Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”) bump into Gilbert and effortlessly become characters displaying emotional depth, which is what Roberts’ performance is missing. She looks sad, but it’s hard to see why, because relentlessly caring people and gorgeous landmarks surround her. By the time the credits roll, you’ll want another movie as a vacation from “Eat Pray Love.” — Nathan Poppe, Staff Writer

Ferrell delivers on latest lowbrow effort

I

n a fit of astounding comedic energy and brute force, “The Other Guys” resurrects the dead-as-dust buddycop movie, and like all miracles it’s a sight to behold. The chemistry between Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay generated the endlessly funny “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” and “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” but with its constant stream of inspired silliness, “The Other Guys” qualifies as the duo’s crowning achievement. This is about two detectives who get overshadowed by loose-cannon wild cops, spending their days filing paperwork and making coffee while guys like Christopher Danson and P.K. Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson, Samuel

L. Jackson) get all the nitro-burning, adrenaline-pumping glory. Allen Gamble (Ferrell) is just fine with this arrangement; he would rather bust property owners for code infractions than pull his weapon. But his partner, Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg), is going nuts, feeling chained down by Allen’s mild-mannered relationship with the law. He wants to crash cars and crack heads, but both men are hemmed in by their separate and hilarious dark pasts. Fortunately for Allen and Terry, an opening appears thanks to an ingeniously funny twist, and they are soon in hot pursuit of David Ershon (Steve Coogan), a white-collar criminal sitting on a pile of other people’s money. No plot description can do justice to the

joys of “The Other Guys.” McKay, Ferrell and Wahlberg are all operating at peak, wringing huge laughs from unexpected sources and getting ample help from Eva Mendes, who displays superb comic timing as Allen’s gorgeous and successful wife, Sheila, and Michael Keaton in his best comedic role in years as the duo’s odd-duck captain. But in contrast to “Anchorman,” which for all its strengths sometimes felt like a string of sketches, “The Other Guys” has real follow-through. Elements and characters sometimes re-emerge unexpectedly to deliver some of the greatest comic moments in the film. McKay is simply a better director now, able to sustain the story, pull high-energy performances from both his lead actors

and the massive supporting cast, and deliver the laughs while keeping an eye on moving the plot forward. For much of “The Other Guys,” Ferrell plays against type, fighting against the more outlandish impulses that characterize much of his work and allowing for Allen to experience a great slow burn. Wahlberg is simply playing a hilariously inept version of the high-strung cop he played in “The Departed,” and the chemistry is spot-on. No excuses have to be made for laughing at “The Other Guys” — people with high standards for lowbrow will be rewarded from start to finish. — George Lang, LookatOKC editor

“THE EXPENDABLES” Rating: R (Strong action and bloody violence throughout, and for some language) Running time: 1 hour, 43 minutes Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts,

**

Ancient, awkward, and somewhat sad

S

ylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables” is an exercise in nostalgia for the bygone era of muscly, macho action films. It’s willfully out of date, like an aging hair band that can’t pack away the spandex. Sylvester Stallone, the director, cowriter and star, has said he set out to make a movie “with brains and brawn, not modern technology.” Stallone thus comes across as a kind of Rip Van Winkle, had Van Winkle been a die-hard Guns N’ Roses fan. “The Expendables” is awash in motorcycles, tattoos, black leather, glistening biceps and big guns. Though the “Rambo” star’s suggestion that today’s movies have lost something of their masculin-

ity and authenticity bears some truth, surely the answer isn’t to pretend the past two decades never happened. Stallone is Barney Ross, the leader of a group of mercenaries who are played by most of the remaining defenders of high body count, testosterone-filled action: British action star Jason Statham (blade expert Lee Christmas), Chinese martial artist Jet Li (as Yin Yang), WWE wrestler Steve Austin (Paine), ultimate fighter Randy Couture (Toll Road), former NFL player and Old Spice commercial actor Terry Crews (as the absurdly named Hale Caesar) and Dolph Lundgren, famously the Russian boxer Ivan Drago from the “Rocky” films (as the loose cannon Gunner Jensen). The most respected actor to be sum-

moned for duty is Mickey Rourke, who plays the group’s job hunter, a grizzled former mercenary named Tool. It’s a testament to Rourke’s abilities that he somehow manages to move through “The Expendables,” enlivening it with old warrior wisdom (in a monologue, he says he’s dead inside, “Dracula dead”) while still maintaining his dignity. The crew is hired out to storm the fictional Caribbean island of Vilena, where a corrupt general (the usually comedic David Zayas) and a villainous, rogue CIA agent (the well-chosen Eric Roberts) are in power. The general’s daughter (Giselle Itie) is leading a resistance, and she quickly becomes a focal point of the mission. Frequently, “The Expendables” is so

incoherent, even on its own terms, as to be laughable. Menacing one-liners and poor production values made me wonder whether I walked into not a movie theater but a time warp. This is a movie world where irony never happened. However, that Stallone can be so ardent about returning to this kind of film gives “The Expendables” a strange charm. It’s absurd, easy to make fun of and remarkably out of touch. But one imagines it’s exactly the movie Stallone wanted to make. He loves this stuff, and one is inclined to allow him his quixotic, boyish dream where he is forever leaping through explosions and killing bad guys. — Jack Coyle, Associated Press

Taco monkeys and Tuesdays

L

ast year, Iguana Mexican Grill began hosting what it called Taco Tuesday, which amounts to street tacos being sold for a buck. The result: a weekly throng at the 9th Street locale to dip its collective beak into a stream of some 2,000 tacos pouring from the kitchen. If Taco Tuesday were in the dictionary, chef/co-owner Ryan Parar rott’s smiling mug would be next to it. Not so says Taco John’s, a purveyor of quick-Mex from the taco mecca that is Cheyenne, Wyoming. Taco John’s, which has twice failed to penetrate the Oklahoma market, sent a cease and desist order to the Iguana Mexican Grill last week, demanding the use of ”Taco Tuesday,” well, cease and desist. A Twitter ucky donnybrook has ensued, with the unlucky Tweeter charged with manning the Taco John’s account being bludgeoned by a barrage of snarky and occasionally profane Tweets. The poor kid charged with managing the Taco John’s Twitter account deserves a raise. I may be one of the few people in the world who’ve been to Taco Tuesday at Taco John’s AND Iguana. Yes, when I was a freshman at York College in Nebraska, I did on more than one occasion darken drive-thru at Taco John’s. Hey, it was the 80s, I was in the proverbial experimental phase. Don’t judge. Plus, they didn’t have Taco Bell in York. I’m not proud of my Taco John’s daze. I did indeed partake in the consumption of meat that appeared to have been squeezed from a tube into a corn tortilla shell, dashed with lettuce and cheese and handed out a window — and at a discount on Tuesdays. But there’s no discounting my shame. Meanwhile, chef Parrott and friends serve up outstanding street tacos every Tuesday, using a variety of interesting fillings. In fact, I’m getting hungry for one just typing about it. Now, it’s been more than two decades since I’ve been to Taco John’s. I never made it to either of Johnny’s failed attempts in the metro. Perhaps they’ve risen from the ashes of sub-mediocrity the way Taco Mayo has the past decade. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. Regardless, there’s not forgiving this silly use of proprietary rights, which has zero effect on Taco John’s other than the fact that #tacotuesday on Twitter might confuse their “fans.” Perhaps Taco John’s thinks if people are dumb enough to eat their prefab tacos, they’re too dumb to realize there’s a difference between Taco John’s and Iguana. I’m no mind-reader, but I’m inclined to think Taco John’s doesn’t give its customers much credit. The evidence is in their belief that a monkey riding a dog would initiate the desire to eat cheap Mexican food. Meantime, it’s Tuesday and I know where to get tacos and it ain’t at Taco John’s.

always get me down

As far as the Oklahoma City twitter-verse is concerned, Taco Tuesday will always be in reference to Iguana Mexican Grill and chef/co-owner Ryan Parrott.

From director Alexandre Aja comes the new action thriller “Piranha.” Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break; a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there’s something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers. After a sudden underwater tremor, scores of the prehistoric maneating fish are set free. An unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food.

Gordon Betts (Idris Elba) and his friends enjoy a luxurious lifestyle funded by bank robberies, and they avoid capture by sticking to a strict set of rules. As they celebrate the latest job, a former associate arrives with a daring plan to rob an armored car. The lure of so much cash is too tempting to resist but, unbeknown to Gordon’s men, this heist puts them on a collision course with Russian mobsters and a detective (Matt Dillon) who will do anything to capture them.

RESTAURANTS

Cuppies and Joe FROM WIMGO.COM The dream of opening a bakery where they could share their delicacies, coupled with inspiration from a neighborhood “cupcakery” in Chicago, led Elizabeth Diefenderfer and her mother, Peggy, to establish Cuppies and Joe. They sought a combination of bakery and coffee house, where customers could relax and make themselves at home. The atmosphere in Cuppies and Joe indeed welcomes anyone who seeks to retreat to a place filled with friends and desserts akin to what Mom makes in the kitchen. Cuppies and Joe has the charm of a coffee shop, combined with the comfort of every mom’s best cooking. Upon walking through the front door, customers are greeted by the chatter of sociable customers. As they move through the line, guests can pick from such offerings as a Horsebite, a Sassafrass, or a Bangarang… Every treat enjoyed by visitors is concocted in the Cuppies and Joe kitchen. There are tried-and-true favorites, as well as experiments in taste. Cuppies and Joe already has its share of customers, just as the family originally envisioned. That gives it the neighborhood atmosphere. Regulars and first-time guests alike enjoy their treats in one of several vibrant rooms. The walls of the former house on NW 23 and Shartel in Oklahoma City features intriguing shades that add a certain eclectic feel to the rooms. Local artists’ work also adorns the walls and sometimes there is live music by local musicians. Elizabeth describes the décor as cozy, a tribute to the family’s homebody nature. Like a home, each room holds a unique personality, and each space can become whatever the situation calls for. Cuppies and Joe is open noon until 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and noon until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Cupcakes are $2 each or $22 for a dozen. Cookies are $1 and pies are $4 per slice or $16 to 25 for the whole pie. Coffee is $1.25 per cup, $2 for a bottomless cup of coffee. Cuppies and Joe features a full espresso bar as well, with a cappuccino costing $2.25, a latte 2.50, and a flavored latte $2.95. The shop welcomes large orders, if made a day in advance.

Budos

From Page 15

music lawyer, has clients rather than students. “That’s usually what happens — usually we go in for a weekend and crank it out. For whatever reason, the guys were just like laser beams. Everybody was just super on-point, you know?” But being on-point is has been the band’s calling card since releasing its self-titled debut packed with tight Afrobeat funk in 2005. The Budos Band’s musical philosophy fit perfectly with Mann and his label. Mann (Gabriel Roth) is the bandleader for Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, the critically acclaimed practitioners of true soul, and like all artists he produces for Daptone, The Budos Band records to analog tape on vintage gear. The result is a sound that feels classic because it was record-

ed using the same care and techniques that came into play on old Stax/Volt sides. “It’s definitely not a retro thing — it’s an old-school thing,” Tankel said. “These are the kinds of records we like listening to.” The Budos Band’s rhythm section, Daniel Foder on bass and drummers Brian Profilio and John Carbonella Jr., grew up together on Staten Island, and various factions of The Budos Band were playing together in hip-hop, hardcore and funk bands dating back to the mid-1990s. But the watershed came at the turn of the century with the rise of Antibalas, the Brooklyn-based Afrobeat group modeled after Fela Kuti’s Africa 70 band. That band, whose core now serves

as the pit orchestra for the Broadway production of “Fela!” helped popularize the sound in America and began staging Afrobeat parties in the New York area. Tankel and his bandmates used Afrobeat as a jumping-off point, combining Kuti-style grooves with classic funk horn charts and melodies. For “The Budos Band III,” Tankel said the group pulled from not only Afrobeat and “Ethiopiques,” the ongoing series of 1960s-70s Ethiopian jazz compilations, but from vintage hard rock and psychedelia. The album closes thusly with “Reppirt Yad,” a minor-key recasting of The Beatles’ “Day Tripper.” Tankel said that many different influences and interests come into play when nine guys share a stage. “We have a couple of metalheads in

the group and we’ve got guys who love hard rock and psychedelic rock and stuff like that,” he said. “It’s not as if we’re a metal band or anything like that, but it has definitely influenced our approach.” The Budos Band rolls into Oklahoma City on Tuesday to play material from all three collections — songs that are perfected in a live setting before the band preserves them for all time. Tankel said the songs might be looser on stage, but the band stays faithful to the album versions. “One thing we really don’t do is jam out during a live show,” he said. “We’re not going to take a song that’s four minutes on an album and all of a sudden make it a 10-minute song. We’re not going to turn into a jam band.”
