GEORGE LANG peting programmers wage war through their CG avatars. The computer effects used in the $17 million film (about $37.3 million in current dollars) were cutting edge for the time — “Tron” did not look like an Atari 2600 game. Steven Lisberger’s original was not a huge hit: it made $33 million, which roughly covered Disney’s cost of production and marketing. But a young artist who had just gone to work at Disney, John Lasseter, saw an early cut of “Tron” and the “light cycle” scenes, and as he told Animation World Magazine in 1998, “It absolutely blew me away! A little door in my mind opened up. I looked at it and said, ‘This is it! This is the future!’ ” Lasseter went on to run Pixar. The problem right now is that there are no DVDs of the original “Tron” in stores right now. I saw it recently on one of the HD channels and it looks even better than I remembered — “Tron” has aged well. But so many people have not seen it and will want to see it before “Tron: Legacy” opens Dec. 17. There will probably be a remastered “Tron” ready once “Tron: Legacy” hits Blu-ray next year, but that seems a little late, given that so many people will want to know the source material. Even so, “Tron: Legacy” looks like it has done many things right, including bringing back Bridges and asking Daft Punk to create the score. In a sense, “Tron: Legacy” builds a bridge between those early days, when computer-generated graphics felt so alien, and our current time when the membrane between organic and digital has never felt thinner.

s we were compiling the holiday movie preview for this issue of LOOKatOKC, the staff was getting more and more hyped over “Tron: Legacy,” Disney’s tentpole release for the Christmas season and one of two Jeff Bridges films for Little Lebowski Urban Achievers to anticipate this December. But what we started noticing was how “Tron: Legacy,” a sequel, has one of the longest stretches between original and follow-up in the history of big event movies. That time interval is so long that there are many, many 28-year-olds out there — roughly the average age of the people reading this column — who have spent their entire lives not watching 1982’s “Tron,” and that’s not even counting the generations that followed. But if “Jaws” is considered the beginning of the blockbuster era, then the original “Tron” is the film that most shaped our current, tech-enabled movie experience. “Tron” focused on Kevin Flynn (Bridges), a computer hacker who finds himself digitized into a computer world where com-

Music can always find a home in Oklahoma

H

aving music inside your home is easy. With that iPad you’re getting for Christmas, I’m pretty sure you can buy an application allowing you to control a home entertainment system and a weather balloon while you brag about how cool you are on Twitter. Having musicians play in your home is a different story. Last month I found myself in Cushing. It’s a speck of Oklahoma roughly 20 minutes away from Stillwater. I was there writing a feature story about The Flatland Travelers, a local jam band who has played about 150 shows in this year alone. Every Tuesday night, Cushing resident D.J. Duncan opens her front door to anyone wanting to play music. The Flatland crew frequents her house and was familiar with guest etiquette. The band made sure its beer made it into the fridge and guitars were at the ready. We weren’t alone. Dozens of musicians from around the state met to play in this humble living room. The Red Dirt Rangers, John Fullbright and several others have made appearances at what is known as the Tuesday Night Music Club. If you’re intrigued, check out the group’s website at www.thetnmc.com. This house was a folkie paradise. Some musicians were still in their teens. Others wouldn’t need to show their I.D. to get the senior discount for coffee at McDonald’s. Regardless of age, everyone got the chance to start a song before listeners joined with their instruments. It didn’t matter how off key the songs got sometimes. It was important because people were openly enjoying these songs in a welcoming environment. I know this house won’t ever become the hippest venue in Oklahoma. It’s meant to be hushed secret, but it’s easily one of the most enjoyable places I’ve listened to music. The home owner doesn’t have any rules as long as the music stops before sunrise. It’s a small happening, but the bands treat it like it’s the biggest concert in the world. I would love to see this beautiful, contagious attitude sweep every venue in Oklahoma. This Cushing home is a reminder. Music isn’t reserved for the young, it’s what makes us young. ARTWORK BY NATHAN POPPE

>>> NOVEMBER 12 Stardeath and White Dwarfs usually keeps pretty quiet in Oklahoma. Besides performing stellar sets with the Flaming Lips at the annual New Year’s Eve show in downtown OKC, the freaky rockers don’t play a lot of local shows. However, when they do play an intimate venue, it’s nothing short of a miracle. Be there. @ The Opolis, Norman, 113 N Crawford Ave.

>>> NOVEMBER 13 It’s hard to believe, but The Non keeps getting better with every show. The instrumental rock quartet plays so passionately and loudly that your ears will ring for a week. Don’t worry, the rest of your body will thank you. @ VZD’s, 4200 N Western Ave.

The cougars truly do come out at night

A LITTLE LESSSON ABOUT COUGARS, MANTHERS AND PUMAS, OH MY.

I

t’s a joke to some, but cougar culture is real and in full force. I’m not talking about the cat, but rather a 40 plus year-old woman seeking a younger man. I first became aware of the now phenomenon in the movie American Pie with the term MILF. I don’t think I should say what the acronym means in case a child starts reading this, so google it. Then in 2003 the awareness grew with the Fountains of Wayne song “Stacy’s Mom” and now with the television show “Cougar Town.” Yes, it existed even in the 60s with the movie The Graduate where Mrs. Robinson seduces her neighbor (Dustin Hoffman) who is about the same age as her own daughter, but I feel like it’s a more outspoken sub culture than before. I didn’t realize cougar culture reached my own neighborhood until talking with a friend who works near Lake Hefner and gets a nice view of Red Rock Canyon Grill. According to him, the cougars come out to play with the cubs (that’s the term for the younger man) at happy hour on Thursdays. Not just that, but apparently the available and willing “cubs” wear red to let the cougars know that the 20-somethings are ready for some cougar time. This sounded a little too intriguing to not experience it myself so I found myself sitting on the patio at Red Rock Canyon Grill at 6:30 on a Thursday night looking for women on the prowl. I brought bait with me to the cougar den: two young guys wearing red to entice the ladies. What I found were many very attractive 30 and 40-somethings dressed to the nines and sitting in groups. They didn’t seem interested in my bait, which was a little disappointing, but I was also assured that they do frequent the restaurant. My assur-

ance was further satisfied after seeing many manthers- that’s an older man looking for a younger woman also known as a sugar daddy- sitting patiently at the bar by themselves waiting for their bait. While I didn’t see any pairing, I did find out from a bartender that summer nights are packed with cougars, manthers and pumas (30-something woman) — all looking for mates. What is it about a cougar that attracts men when history doesn’t seem to favor the older woman? I can tell you my “cub” friends find a woman who knows what she wants with an insatiable sexual appetite is quite appealing. Long term relationship? Maybe. Look at Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. She married a man 16 years younger that she is, and it seems to be going pretty well. Age is an attitude. Just visit cougarlife. com, urbancougars.net, the annual cougar convention, and they’ll tell you that same thing. It’s almost more a sense of empowerment for these women. According to www.cougarconvention.com, a “‘real cougar’ is not defined by a band on her finger — it’s her attitude about life. She is a woman who is constantly looking for new opportunities and knows how to get what she wants. Sometimes things don’t work out exactly as she plans, but she grows from each and every experience.” For all of the younger men on the scout for an older women looking for a younger man, try Lake Hefner on a summer Thursday night. You might find your Mrs. Robinson.

o, Jonathan Swift wrote a satirical novel in 1726, “Gulliver’s Travels,” in which he made allusions to conflicts between governments and religions as seen through the eyes of a man who finds himself living among tiny people, giants and intelligent horses. But this one has Jack Black as a marooned travel writer playing foosball with tiny guys. Score!

‘Due Date’ fails to deliver a laugh hangover

R

obert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis create sparks as mismatched roadtrip partners who rub each other the wrong way, but Todd Phillips’ anti-buddy comedy “Due Date” doesn’t burn into the type of comedic conflagration the writer-director loosed with “The Hangover.” Finished with a last-minute business trip in Atlanta, high-strung architect Peter Highman (Downey) is ready to get home to Los Angeles and his pregnant wife, Sarah (an underused Michelle Monaghan), who is scheduled to give birth to their first child in a matter of days. At the airport, he has an unpleasant encounter with Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis), an aspiring actor on his way to Hollywood to live his dream of getting on “the greatest sitcom of all time,”

“Two and a Half Men.” Even worse, Ethan is seated near Peter on the plane and starts chattering about bombs and cell phones. Both are swiftly kicked off the flight and land on the no-fly list. Since his wallet is back on the plane in his carry-on, Peter is stuck in Atlanta without cash, credit cards or ID. Desperate to get back home in time for his daughter’s arrival, he grudgingly hitches a ride with Ethan, who has rented a car for himself and his bulldog, Sonny. Although Phillips, who directed, cowrote and co-produced “Due Date,” makes a valiant attempt to seal all the plot holes in this setup, it remains fundamentally flawed. After his maddening initial experiences with Ethan, it’s impossible to believe the wealthy Peter wouldn’t find some other way to get home, such as having his wife wire him money and then hiring a driver, taxi or any person age 25 or older willing to rent

a car and take him cross-country. The far-fetched impetus for their pairing makes the outrageous mishaps along the way seem all the more implausible. Nevertheless, the odd couple embark on their road trip, which includes a hilarious encounter with a drug-dealing Alabama couple (Juliette Lewis and Phillips), a humiliating run-in with an angry Western Union clerk (Danny McBride) and an uneasy reunion with Peter’s pal Darryl (Jamie Foxx) in which Ethan manages to raise doubts about the parentage of Peter’s unborn child. The mismatched travel companions also wreck a car in spectacular fashion, wander across the U.S.-Mexican border and reveal some heartbreaking truths about themselves. The performances from Downey and Galifianakis prove the best attraction on their cinematic journey, on which the quiet, emotional moments strike home more effectively than the outlandish

gags. Downey, a two-time Oscar nominee, manages to make his control freak character likable even when his simmering frustrations boil over, prompting him to punch a kid or spit in a dog’s face. For comedian-turned-actor Galifianakis, “Due Date” gives him a bigger showcase for the clueless man-child antics that made him so funny to watch in “The Hangover.” Unlike “The Hangover,” Phillips’ “Due Date” never seems to build any momentum. While the missing-groom mystery produced a sustained sense of urgency for the 2009 what-happensin-Vegas romp, the childbirth deadline in “Due Date” fails to effectively fuel the road-trip comedy. Instead, “Due Date” chugs along episodically until it eventually runs out of gas. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

‘Megamind’ looks the part, but falls short in the end

T

he depth of imagination heaped into DreamWorks Animation’s “Megamind” goes largely to its bluehued antihero and his oddball henchman, a space fish with a walk-around suit reminiscent of 1953’s “Robot Monster.” Beyond that, “Megamind” modestly succeeds as a cute, frenetic diversion. Kids probably won’t think it is mega, but they won’t mind, either. A variation of the Superman/Lex Luthor story line with extra helpings of “The Incredibles” thrown in for familiarity’s sake, “Megamind” centers on two spacemen from similar

backgrounds who find wildly different earthbound fates. Metro Man (voiced by Brad Pitt) is a square-jawed dogooder who lands with the right family, excels at a good school and becomes the protector-in-residence for bustling Metro City. In bulbous contrast, Megamind (Will Ferrell) was doomed to villainy from the beginning, crash-landing inside a nearby prison and raised by hardened criminals. He’s intelligent (just look at that noggin), but he grows up with an extreme persecution complex and aims most of his ire at Metro Man, Metro City and the TV reporter on the Metro Man beat, Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey).

But things suddenly change for Megamind when he gains the upper hand and discovers that any good villain needs a nemesis: Without Metro Man around, the evil life grows stale. Also, Megamind experiences some confusion — he finds it hard to be a bad guy when he’s falling in love with Roxanne. “Megamind” looks spectacular and is well-voiced, especially David Cross as Megamind’s piscine sidekick, Minion, and Jonah Hill’s nice-and-nasty turn as Hal, Roxanne’s overeager cameraman. But despite eye-catching art direction and a few solid laughs, “Megamind” falls into the cheap trap of using popcultural references and shopworn music

cues to keep things rolling. That muchneeded moratorium on setting the tone with George Thorogood’s “Bad to the Bone” is way overdue. To his credit, director Tom McGrath of the “Madagascar” franchise employs a neat framing device for the film involving a life-threatening standoff between Megamind and the powers of gravity. He also successfully creates chemistry between Ferrell, Fey and Pitt when, as is often the case with animated features, they spent little or no time together in the studio. But in a year when a boy and his dragon raised the game for DreamWorks, “Megamind” never flies quite so high. — George Lang, LookatOKC editor

‘SPEAK NOW’ BY TAYLOR SWIFT

— George Lang, LookatOKC editor

17 NOVEMBER 10 - NOVEMBER 27

Maybe it’s her porcelain-doll countenance and possibly it’s her age, but somehow the public got it in its head that Taylor Swift could not defend herself. That would be wrong: “Speak Now” might be swaddled in the cuddly country tones and spit-polished ‘80s rock sheen expected from a 20-year-old Pennsylvanian raised on Faith Hill and Def Leppard, but Swift possesses the lyrical bent of a brawler. She is taking it to everyone who crossed her since “Fearless” with razor blades hidden in nuggets of ear candy. Swift gets her swing on with “Dear John,” a nearly sevenminute takedown of John Mayer in which she decries how “all the girls that you’ve run dry have tired, lifeless eyes ‘cause you burned them out.” If it weren’t such a nice-sounding country ballad, “Dear John” could be a broadside worthy of Polly Jean Harvey. That’s the only name Swift actively calls out, but chances are the semifamous B-movie actress in “Better Than Revenge” feels like she heard it a few times. Swift avoids making “Speak Now” sound like a tabloid marathon, possibly because she sprinkles the album with adolescent swooning on “Enchanted” and the “Forever Young” pastiche “Never Grow Up” to break up the grievances. But those featherweight moments feel like concessions to fans who prefer Swift to be all sweetness and light. She is far more interesting when addressing the stage-rushing egotist in the room on “Innocent.” It is a sly, patronizing takedown of Kanye West, describing his Video Music Awards stunt as just immature, that “it’s okay — life is a tough crowd” and that he’s “32 and still growing up now.” That is how it’s done — it might sound like a pillow fight, but she’s swinging a pillowcase full of oranges. Now, if Swift would just toughen up the music — and the voice — behind her increasingly sharp lyrics, “Speak Now” might speak with more outward strength. But progress is progress.

ane Cook said he is fully aware that massive popularity almost always gets counter-balanced by a comparably massive backlash. But as one of the few current stand-up comedians who can pack basketball arenas, Cook’s response

is to laugh it off. “It’s almost weird to admit, but it becomes a bit of a badge of honor in a strange way,” said Cook, who performs Monday at the Oklahoma City Arena. “I find the more that you have detractors and people pounding you, it’s kind of good for everybody. It keeps you in everybody’s discussion. “It’s just with the Internet, I think in this day and age we seem to see it with people like myself more because it’s all on the bathroom wall, so to speak, of Google searches and whatnot,” he said. “But it’s always been there. It’s always going to be there. There’s always going to be the people that embrace you and fill an arena, and then there’s going to be people outside throwing an egg at it.” The backlash was mounted on two different fronts: more alternative-minded comedy fans who bristled at Cook’s rambling routines, frat-boy demeanor and Ed Hardy shirts; and members of the comedy community who accused him of ripping off bits from such performers as diverse as Steve Martin, Joe Rogan and Louis C.K. Cook addressed the issue in his recent routine “Haters,” which was included on his 2009 album, “Isolated Incident.” In one performance of the “Haters” segment in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cook read an anonymous email he received in which the writer told him that his parents, George and Donna Jean Cook, who died of cancer within one year of each other, did so to get away from their son’s comedy. Tough words from someone unwilling to sign his or her name, but Cook said that when the backlash hit, he dived into the annals of comedy and discovered that nearly everyone who makes it big gets hit hard from all sides, including from fellow comics.

COMEDY SHOW: Dane Cook

There’s always going to be the people that embrace you and fill an arena, and then there’s going to be people outside throwing an egg at it.” DANE COOK

“I understood it immediately,” Cook said. “I just went back and read the books about my favorites and the great comics that I enjoyed, and that’s one thing that everybody had in common. The moment that I hit it big, it was like, batten down the hatches, because I’m about to feel the other side of it.” Cook, 38, started doing stand-up in his late-teens and eventually found his voice in improvisational comedy, but he started getting attention by the mid-‘90s, when he began showing up on late-night talk shows. An astute user of social media, Cook build his following through constant touring and the viral spread of his routines — he has over 2.6 million friends on MySpace Comedy. His creation of the “super-finger,” or the extension of the middle two fingers on each hand as a statement of displeasure, ultimately became a widespread symbol of solidarity among the throngs who attended his shows, watched his Comedy Central specials and bought copies of “Retaliation” and “Vicious Circle.” Two decades after his first stand-up work, Cook is preparing to release “I Did My Best: Greatest Hits,” a collection of his favorite routines from the past decade. Cook said the idea of putting together such a compilation felt strange — he said he does not feel like much has changed since he first stepped in front of a microphone. “I listened to all this material that I had made up ultimately five albums and a couple of comedy specials over the last 10, 11 years,” he said. “And as I went through it, what I started to find was there was some great, kind of unreleased stuff, and then there was some stuff that never made it onto a particular disc that somebody might be a fan of more than others, and that’s really what made it fun. “So, the greatest hits is highlighting what I think is some of my and my fans’ favorite moments over the last 10 years, and yet at the same time, I think it’s kind of closing a chapter on, ‘Okay, here’s what I did,’” Cook said. “Hopefully, we’re talking about ‘Greatest Hits 2’ in 10 years.” And if that happens, Cook said he can take all the bad along with the good. “I’m a person that doesn’t absorb the big, big love or the backlash or hate to any extensive level,” he said. “My ego doesn’t get too big, and yet if something fails or doesn’t work, I don’t kill myself over it.”

There’s a new ranked heavyweight contender in the Oklahoma City pizza federation, from the Hal Smith Restaurant Group stable. Upper Crust Wood-Fired Pizza, 5860 N Classen Blvd., just finished its first month of tenancy in the shiny new Classen Curve development. The high-end pizzeria joins Cafe 501, 105degrees Cafe and Republic Gastropub in the gilded plaza designed by Rand Elliott.

T

he concept is a longtime dream of Hank Craft, chief operating officer of Hal Smith Restaurant Group, with a menu developed by the group’s executive chef, Brad Johnson. The general manager of Upper Crust is Jeff Dixon, who put in his time at several Hal Smith concepts, most notably Charleston‘s. The wood, metal and glass interior was conceived by TAP Architecture. Chef Johnson’s pies cook in shimmer-

ing silver ovens that burn a mix of oak, pecan and hickory, imparting rustic flavor. In the first of two visits, we started with U.C Calamari, an Anti-Pizza platter and Buffalo-style “Wings.” The calamari was solid but not good enough to warrant spoiling lunch. The Anti-Pizza, a variety of cold cuts, cheeses, greens and crusty bread, allowed mixing and matching. The mortadella is sliced a tad thick, but any plate with capicola,

caramelized onions, Kalamata olives, hunks of Parma, dollops of fresh mozzarella and crumbled blue cheese is welcome at my table any time. The wings were a wonder of butchering. The wing is carefully clipped and cleaned so only the meaty tip is left to nibble, served with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks. What the wings lacked in substance, they made up in flavor and tidiness. Here are wings you don’t have to

The design of the establishment, the food selection and the wine selection all fit into what the folks putting togther the Classen Curve are going for. wear. On trip No. 2, we tried the Garlic Cheese Bread, which includes four kinds of cheese and way more slices than two could finish if there was any hope of getting halfway through dinner. In two trips, I’ve tried three pies: The Rucci, Some Like it Hot and LK. The Rucci looks like a standard pepperoni pizza until you bite into premium Fiorucci pepperoni, which are plentiful. The highlight of the LK was the melted dollops of goat cheese and mozzarella. Tomatoes, eggplant, red pepper, red onion, Parmesan and artichoke hearts brighten the mood. My favorite pie was the Some Like it Hot. While not south-of-the-border hot, it has plenty of pop. While the Rucci and LK were rock-solid, they were riffs on pies I recognized. The Some Like it Hot, on the other hand, is a truly original composition from maestro Johnson. Peppadew, pepperoncini and hot cherry peppers join a pie well-populated with spicy Italian sausage. The coup de grace is a spiral of balsamic vinegar that allows the flavors to advance full-throttle. On my latest trip, I tried the “Bricked” Lemon Chicken, which is marinated in herbs and garlic before its appointment with the fire fueled by the aforementioned trio of woods. The result is a succulent portion of chicken that sticks to your taste buds the way a summer day spent with a pretty girl sticks in your memory. The accompanying side salad was one I could eat every day: bibb lettuce, arugula, candied walnuts, and sliced green apple coated in a light vinaigrette. The combination of texture and flavor couldn’t be better executed. Much as I enjoyed the chicken, the very best was saved for last. While dessert is something I enjoy but rarely seek out, the cookie pie will doubtlessly bring me back on its own merits. One small pizza pan covered in two cookie doughs: half chocolate-chunk, half white chocolate and macadamia nut. Once pulled from the loving arms of the oven, it’s outfitted with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a swath of chocolate syrup. This dessert might never win a beauty contest, but it will grab your inner 8-year-old by the scruff of the neck with its warm, doughy richness and drag him/her to the counter where you waited for Mom’s homemade cookies to emerge from the oven. When food uses your palate as a springboard to your childhood, there’s no sense in resisting, as this is the stuff of angels. Upper Crust offers eight specialty pies and plenty of custom options, including four sauces, eight cheeses, eight meats and more than a dozen specialty toppings.

WEATERS USUALLY AREN’T THE TRENDIEST pieces in the closet, but this year they come close. Oh, sure, they’re comfortable and warm, and they work well with the rest of your wardrobe. But interesting prints, shapes and details elevate them to more than basics. I’m talking sweaters with a little something extra. Shelley Cox, owner of Cayman’s Clothiers in Norman, said the store buys lots of sweaters because women fi nd them easy to wear. Long sweaters pair perfectly with leggings or jeans. Shorter sweaters look nice layered over longer tanks or T-shirts. “That’s a huge trend,” she said. “For Cayman’s, sweaters are a big deal.” Sweaters fit in nicely at the office or can dress up an outfit when 5 o’clock rolls around. Even better, they’re great for just lounging around the house or running errands on those days when nothing more than comfort is expected. “I think that one of the things I’ve noticed this season is the lighter-weight sweaters that are > SEE REST OF STORY ON PAGE 25 <

conducive to our temperatures in Oklahoma,” Cox said. Karen Marquis, owner of Kokopelli in Northpark Mall, said with so many sweaters in neutral colors, the textures and details seem to be what stand out. Sweaters have become more of an accessory; they’re the piece that makes an outfit complete. Women haven’t bought as many sweaters in the past few years, either, she said, and now what they’re fi nding in the stores looks fresh and versatile. Along with knit tunics and chunky crops, other sweater styles include coats, cardigans, vests, dresses and cardi-coats that are open in the front but hang loose. Zebra prints, tweeds, asymmetrical hems, ruffles, vintage stripes, crystals, texture, fur trim and even French cuffs add the something extra. Steal a look straight from the runway by pairing a soft cardigan with a ruffled dress. That’s a favorite of designer Oscar de la Renta. Marquis said she’s seen chunky sweaters shown with evening dresses. Whether you opt for dressy or casual, wait no more. Warm up to a sweater this winter.

Highlights from the Oklahoma Art League Highlights from the Oklahoma Art League will be exhibited on the second floor of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art beginning November 9 and running through Nov. 28. This fall, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art presents Highlights from the Oklahoma Art League. Honoring the Oklahoma Art League’s 100th anniversary, the exhibition features a selection of approximately 20 works donated by OAL. Included in the exhibition will be paintings by Nellie Shepherd, Oscar Brousse Jacobson, Nan Sheets, and Doel Reed; prints by Jean-François Millet, Francisco de Goya, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Alphonse Legros, Joseph Pennell, and others; and a drawing by Richard Vernon Goetz. The Oklahoma Art League was formed in 1910 and for more than two decades collected paintings and sponsored art exhibitions. In January of 1936, President Roosevelt’s Works Project Administration helped to launch the OAL’s first gallery, the WPA Experimental Gallery. Nan Sheets, a well-known local artist and OAL member, was named Technical Advisor of the WPA Gallery and began a fund drive to procure more space for the Gallery’s growing collections and programs. Two years later, in January of 1938, the OAL moved the WPA Gallery into five galleries on the fifth floor of the Municipal Auditorium, and Sheets was named Director of the new Municipal Auditorium Federal Arts Center. Sheets maintained the original WPA Gallery’s schedule of changing exhibitions and art classes and opened three extension galleries in local public libraries. Over the next few years, the Arts Center flourished while federal funding for the arts disappeared during WWII. In response, Sheets and Eleanor Blake Kirkpatrick, another OAL member, organized the first Beaux Arts Ball to raise funds for the Art Center, and on May 18, 1945, the Oklahoma Art Center was incorporated into perpetual existence.
