Celebrating five years of publishing MENG ZHAO, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF The year 2018 is a milestone for Dakai Maritimes. We’re celebrating five years of bringing great stories on business, immigrants, international students, language and culture, events, food and more within, and beyond, the Chinese community in Nova Scotia. We’ve come a long way from our initial couple of issues; being a magazinestyle publication and when the circulation was only 5,000 copies. We’ve built a strong partnership with The Chronicle Herald and have since become a tabloid inserted into the paper. We have also increased our circulation from 5,000 to 35,000,

covering most regions in the HRM. At Dakai Maritimes, we report real life stories of Chinese people who reside in the Maritime provinces. Through this journey, we’ve encountered countless people; each of whom play an important role in this multicultural, diverse and vibrant city. We’ve also connected people and businesses who look for support and growth. Halifax truly is a great city. We feel extremely lucky to have published Dakai here. As a tabloid that celebrates Chinese language and culture, we feel welcomed, included and connected. Here’s to the first five years! We’ll dedicate our next five to making an even larger impact on the communities we wish to connect with.

Dakai Maritimes is published four times per year and distributed with The Chronicle Herald and in specific neighbourhoods in HRM. Founder, Owner, Editor-in-Chief: Meng Zhao Editor and Project Manager: Baillie Saunders Translations: Fenfei Xiao Cover photo: Herald Archives

Tourism CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 industry,” said Michele Saran, CEO of Tourism Nova Scotia. Last year, 11 per cent more Chinese tourists came to Canada, and Saran expects similar growth this year. “I don’t think it will be less than double digit growth going forward,” said Saran. “It’s a great time to be in the China market.” China is not only the world’s largest source of tourists, but the country’s tourists are known to be the largest spenders in international tourism. In 2016, 610,100 Chinese tourists visited Canada and spent about $1.5 billion. Now Canada’s third-largest tourism source market, behind the United States and the United Kingdom, the Canadian government wants to further tap into this growing market. Ottawa has set a goal of doubling the number of Chinese tourists coming to Canada by 2021. To make it easier, the federal government recently opened seven new visa application centres in China. Currently, Chinese tourists can fly to Canada from 11 cities in China, and talks are underway with Chinese carriers to include more direct flights to Canadian cities, said Saran. “We would be absolutely thrilled to see a direct flight from Halifax to China,” she said. “I know it is something that everyone wants.” While Zhang would love to see a direct flight to Halifax, he isn’t sure the province’s population is big enough to sustain one. Zhang’s travel agency

offers bus tours to Chinese tourists coming from Ontario. Getting to Nova Scotia by tour bus is a cheaper option than taking a connecting flight from Toronto, he said. To get ready for more Chinese tourists, Tourism Nova Scotia is offering Nova Scotia businesses and tourism operators trade readiness programs, focusing on things like the benefits of having Chinese-language websites, information and signage at businesses. They will also provide advice on offering mobile payment applications popular in China, and the benefits of marketing on Chinese social media such as Weibo, WeChat or Baidu. Nationally there is a logo to commemorate the Canada-China Year of Tourism and local businesses are encouraged to put it in their windows to welcome Chinese visitors. Zhang would love to see some Chinese signage and instructions at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. “It would make people feel welcome when they arrive,” he said. Plans are underway to better market Nova Scotia to the Chinese tourism market. With an additional $500,000 from the province, Tourism Nova Scotia is hiring a Beijing-based marketing representative who can speak Mandarin and work with tour operators in China, letting them know what Nova Scotia has to offer. “They know we have this beautiful, pristine coastline,” said Saran. In May, Saran and her colleagues will welcome to Halifax about 1,800 tourism professionals from around the world, including a large delegation from China, for an annual Destination Canada event. She is excited for the

China Program helps local entrepreneurs to start business in China LU XU A panel discussion on how to do business in China was held on Feb. 26. Seven panellists shared their own experience on exporting products to China and understanding Chinese business culture to a full house at the Halifax Central Library. Local entrepreneurs, scholars and politicians gathered at the Paul O’regan Hall to learn about the prospect and the skills in landing business in China. The director of International Relations Buddy Walzak gave a warm opening remark about the province’s effort in fostering a “win-win” relationship with China. “I feel very optimistic about the future with China and with Nova Scotia,”

Walzak commented in an interview with Dakai Maritimes. He said the government wants to make sure that it’s helping businesses to foster the relationship. Bernadette Hamilton-Reid is a local business woman and the seventh gen-

eration African Nova Scotian. She owns a store that sells Afrocentric products such as clothing and jewelry. Her store has been around for 25 years. Hamilton-Reid said that everything she saw in stores was always made in China. “I would love to have a trip there one day, just to see the factories,” Hamilton-Reid said she was satisfied with the Chinese-made products and would want to take the opportunity to build connections. The event was hosted by Nova Scotia International Network Society. It is the kick-start of a series of events under the China Program, a program that’s supported by NSINS and four other organizations. Participants will have a chance to win a free trip to China at the end of the program.

The‘犬(dog)’symbol and its related Chinese characters QIANYI GAO We have just entered the Year of the Dog. When celebrating the Lunar New Year last month, a Chinese character-'狗'(gou) was found on many posters. Yes, the character means ‘dog’. Apart from countless topics on how dogs are 'best friend of mankind', let us look from the perspective of the Chinese characters. Just like the character‘狗’, many characters for animals have a dog radical. 猫(mao=cat),狐(hu=fox),狼(lang=wolf ) ,狮(shi=lion) and猴(hou=monkey), to name a few. In most cases, a Chinese Character with a dog radical refers to an animal -- its name, temperament, or behavior.

The dog radical symbol. 反犬旁。

The Characters with a dog radical refer to or describe some rude or violent behavior. For example, 犯(fan) means invade; 犷(guang) means rude or brutle, 狂(kuang) means madness.

But initially these words specifically referred to the behavior of dogs. 犯(fan) meant that a dog violated people. 犷meant that a dog of being fierce. 狂(kuang) meant that a dog being insane. These characters have the same structure as the‘狗’or dog character. The left dog radical means 'animal'; whereas the right '句', '广' and '王' are pronunciations for each character. The dog radical came from the character‘犬quan’, which meant "big dog" in ancient Chinese. Interestingly, in Japanese, the kanji‘犬-inu’also means "dog". ‘犬’ is also a component for creating Chinese characters. Daily words, such as cry (哭ku), awards (奖jiang), offer (献xian) are examples. But initially‘哭cry’refers to the dog

crying,‘奖award’refers to pushing dogs to run, and‘献offering’refers to the dog sacrifice. Other words such as 吠(fei), 獒(ao) etc, refer to dog's behavior or temperament. 吠(fei) means dog barking. 獒(ao) is a kind of dog, or a fierce dog. However, this kind of characters are less in quantity than those with a dog radical. No matter if a character is with a犬 part or with a dog radical, few people realize that many of them were originally dog-related as human life has been completely changed. Our relationship with animals, especially with dogs, are also different from the past. However, when we look up the ancient dictionaries, we would rediscover some interesting facts. The Chinese characters continue to tell us those fascinating ancient stories.
