N.S. company makes shopping easier ALLISON LAWLOR

Hai Hu is one of those immigrants Halifax wants to attract. Hu, a self-described hustler with a PhD in software engineering, launched his tech company Skyline in Beijing in 2014, before being lured to Nova Scotia by the federal government’s highlycompetitive, startup visa program. “Halifax offers the best entrepreneur environment,” said Hu, from his downtown office at Volta Labs. “I stepped upon one of the best ecosystem in the world just by accident.” Before coming to Halifax in April 2016 through Innovacorp’s Start-up Visa Program, Hu and Changhai Jiang, a co-founder of Skyline, spent six months at the Alchemist Accelerator, a business incubator in the Silicon Valley. After spending a lot of money in California without developing the customer base they wanted, they had to re-think their future. They decided to re-locate, and stumbled upon the visa program. “I was thinking, ‘OK, where is Halifax?’” said Hu, who now happily calls the city home for himself, his wife and their son. Skyline is one of seven start-ups Innovacorp has recommended, out of 250 written applications, to receive a start-

up visa through the federal government’s business incubation/acceleration program. In 2013, Innovacorp became one of the organizations that could recommend entrepreneurs to the program. “Innovacorp is such a believer in this opportunity,” said Dawn House, Innovacorp’s vice-president of client engagement and communications. “The entrepreneurs benefit from having a great place to grow their ventures, and Nova Scotia benefits from the new start-up talent.” Hu passionately believes that Skyline’s technology is the future of retail. Hu

likes to compare Skyline to the flat platform children use as the base of a Lego model. The Lego blocks are facial recognition software, a customerrelationship management system, and the retailer’s point-of-sale system. The blocks are attached to the Skyline platform, which serves as the hub of the operation. “We integrate multiple technologies to make a solution,” said Hu. Through “smart retail”, buying becomes easier. Skyline proved this last spring (2017). The company was behind the launch of China’s first checkout free convenience store in Shanghai. Using technologies like facial recognition and mobile payment portals customers walk into the store, get what they need, and go. The items they take off the shelves are instantly added into their digital card and then charged to them when they leave the store. Skyline is slowly building its Canadian customer base. In February, the company landed its first Halifax customer, a wild sea cucumber producer, and is close to closing a deal with a lobster exporter. Having received significant government and private investment since 2014, including $600,00 from the Chinese government and an angel investor, as well as $270,000 from various Canadian government funding sources, the company wants to raise more. With a goal of $500,000, it will continue to grow and develop smart retail technologies. Using facial recognition to give retailers real-time information on customers, the company has launched a pilot project with 22 stores. By the end of 2018, Hu hopes to have at least 150 stores, in China and North America, on board. With retail on the cusp of tremendous change, Hu believes his company is in a good place. “We are helping local companies. We are building an exciting new product for retailers,” said Hu.

Meet Canada’s first official international student entrepreneur POLESTAR STUDENT IMMIGRATION A 26-year old woman from Shandong, China, is Canada’s first official international student entrepreneur. Nova Scotia nominated Xinpei Sun, who also goes by the name of Stefanie, for immigration through its International Graduate Entrepreneur Program. The novel immigration program was the first in Canada to offer a pathway to citizenship for international students who want to start their own business. Sun started her IT support business, Ubielife.com, right after she finished her second degree at Dalhousie University. “I have always had a dream to start my (own) business (at) some point in my life, Sun said in an interview with Polestar News. Sun came to Halifax in 2013 as an international student. She completed an honors degree and a master’s degree in economics at Dalhousie University and then launched Ubielife.com in 2015. With the Nova Scotia International Graduate Program, Sun was able to apply for her permanent residency

without having to work for anyone and, as she said, “finish everything at once. Nova Scotia issued Sun’s nomination in April. Now she is waiting for federal approval of her application for permanent resident status. Encouraging international entrepreneurs is a trend in Canadian immigration. Nova Scotia was the first to create a program specifically for international students. The program was announced in 2015 and launched in 2016. New Brunswick recently launched a similar program and Newfoundland is expected to follow soon. The federal government recently affirmed its new entrepreneurship program. Sun said she didn’t start the company just to immigrate, but the new program encouraged her. “I thought it would be a good chance for me (because) I don’t want to work for someone else for one or two years, then apply for my immigration status. Immigration Minister Lena Diab said that Nova Scotia started the program because immigration is a key priority for the province. “We believe that international stu-

在家人的支持下,她能够自己开创 Ubielife.com。

Some have said it’s unreasonable for the province to require that recent graduates are the sole owners of the new business and that student run it for a year before applying for a provincial nomination. Qing Chen came to Halifax eight years ago. He started his business Hometown Furniture & Mattress in 2010 and has expanded the business, adding a store in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. According to Chen, he was also involved in the beginning process of

forming a proposal to the government in order to make the program happen. Chen finds some of the terms of the International Graduate Entrepreneur program ambiguous. “For example, the program requires the business to be financially healthy. What does that mean?” Sun’s story is a little bit different. With the support from her family she was able to start Ubielife.com solely on her own. After acknowledging the fact that the stream is the first of its kind and there were no previous cases to learn from, Sun hired an immigration lawyer to deal with the paperwork and a business consultant to make sense of the business requirements in the immigration program. “To be honest, my application was very smooth. I didn’t meet any challenges or problems.” Polestar Student Immigration is an online immigration network (www.studentimmigration.ca).

International students a pillar of growth in Atlantic Canada POLESTAR STUDENT IMMIGRATION International enrolment continues to rise in Atlantic universities while overall enrolment continues to decline. The number of international students enrolled at Atlantic Canada’s 16 universities has doubled since 2007, according to a recent report of the Association of Atlantic Universities. The data matches the overall national trend of universities seeing higher growth in international enrolments compared to domestic. Current international enrolment in Atlantic universities stands at 13,784 compared to 6,464 in 2007. The universities witnessed an average growth of 8.2 per cent a year over the last 11

years. Growth was a little lower this year, with four per cent more international students enrolled this fall compared to a year ago. The numbers do not include language schools, community colleges, high schools or private institutions. Dalhousie University has the largest international cohort, with 3,554 students, with Memorial Universitycoming in second with 2,637. Saint Mary’s University was one of several institutions to see a decline in international enrolment. Saint Mary’s relies heavily on international enrolment, with almost a third of its students coming from outside Canada. International enrolment declined three

Anne, St. Francis Xavier University, Mount Allison University, Universite de Moncton and University of New Brunswick also enrolled fewer international students this year compared to last year. Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, president of the University of Prince Edward Island and chair of the Association of Atlantic Universities said the data is good news for the region. “A key pillar of the Atlantic Growth Strategy is immigration and retention of New Canadians in the region,” Abd-El-Aziz said. Meanwhile overall enrolment continues to be on the decline, a trend that is also seen on national level. The slump is attributed to declining numbers within the 18-24 age group and has been predicted by demographers in Canada for years as birth rates decline. The Atlantic universities recorded an overall enrolment of 73,079 which was 0.3 per cent lower compared to last year. Enrolment in Atlantic universities has been declining since 2013 and is now at the levels of the pre-recession

period of 2008. Much of the decline is at the undergraduate level while the graduate levels have seen some increase in the numbers. According to a survey conducted by AAU, 65 per cent of international students indicated that they would like to stay in the region. However, many reports have come out in the recent past which indicate that these international students are leaving Canada after graduation due to confusion among immigration programs. “We are fully committed to working collaboratively with employers, communities and governments to help create a working environment that encourages international students to stay following their graduation,” AbdEl-Aziz said.

The Chinese character ‘中’ QIANYI GAO One of the most frequently used Chinese characters is 中. It is one of the first characters Chinese language learners will encounter since it appears when they say ‘China’ or ‘Chinese language.’ The shape of the character is a centre line in the middle of a rectangle. Western people tend to pronounce it as ‘John;’ the Pinyin for the symbol is ‘zhong.’ Zhong’ is also one of the simplest characters in shape. It originated from the image of an ancient flag. The centre line indicated a flagpole. The rectangle part was the flag. The character is easy to recognize because it is symmetrical vertically and horizontally. Also, since it has only four strokes compared to most other characters, the character ‘中’can be easily memorized. Despite the simple shape, the character has a broad range of meanings. The basic meaning of it is ‘middle’ or ‘centre.’ So midway is ‘中 Zhong Tu,’ and the middle of a month is ‘月 Yue Zhong’. In English, the words ‘middle’ and ‘medium’ have the same root. So do they in Chinese. 中 also means ‘medium.’ For example, medium size is: 中号 Zhong Hao. China is called ‘中国 Zhong Guo’ namely, ‘the centre state.’ Now, we know that the earth is round and there can be no ‘center’ state, scientifically. However, in the mind of the ancient Chinese, the place where Henan province is located was ‘the centre state.’ This is acceptable because historically, the early civilization of china is regarded to be occurred around the Yellow River. ‘He’ means the Yellow River in ancient Chinese, and ‘Henan’ means the southern part of the Yellow River. The colour which the river appears, the yellow colour, is called 中色 Zhong Se. The “center colour”? Yes. In ancient Five Elements theory, there are five

main colours: green, red, white, black and yellow, and the colours also represent directions. Green — East, Red — South, White — West, Black — North and Yellow — Centre. Interestingly, the yellow was the colour for emperors, and if ordinary people appeared in this color, they would be severely punished. During the China’s long history, the meaning of the character 中 was expanded. It can mean suitable, or proper. For example, 中用 Zhong Yong means useful, and 中听 Zhong Ting means ‘pleasing to ear.’ In Henan dialect, 中 Zhong means ‘All right!’ However, when the word is used as a verb, it means ‘get caught or hit,’ as not all things turn out to be good. For example, 中诡计 means ‘get caught in a trap.’ There are some more important meanings which should be discussed. More related to our mind and heart. But it will be too long for this edition. Let us talk about it again next time.

In the middle of a month 是 "月中"。
