Halifax restauranteur gives back Yeung celebrates Canada 150 in May Garden ALLISON LAWLOR With his fourth Chinese restaurant now open in the city, Eric Yeung is excited to see his business grow so he can continue to give back to the community that has supported him since arriving in Canada with nothing 26 years ago. “Halifax helped me a lot. I love the city. I love the people,” says Yeung. On July 31, Yeung held a grand opening of his new May Garden restaurant in Bedford’s Mill Cove Plaza with dancers, music, and food. The Chinese Society of Nova Scotia performed outside the restaurant with colourful dancing lions and drumming, while several politicians including MP and Speaker of the House Geoff Regan, N.S. Immigration Minister Lena Diab, and Philip Lee, the former lieutenant governor of Manitoba, watched. A leader in the Chinese community, Yeung officially opened his new restaurant on Canada Day and used the occasion to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Following a national, multicultural drumming event he had helped to organize at Pier 21, he invited more than 200 people to his new restaurant to eat and celebrate. Yeung has come a long way since 1991 when at age 33 he left Hong Kong to help his aunt May Yeung in her takeout restaurant in Lower Sackville. “I started from zero,” says Yeung, who in addition to running a successful business now serves with many organizations including as Atlantic region co-chair of the National Congress of Chinese Canadians. Life in Hong Kong was hard. To make a living, Yeung worked several jobs, including in a garment factory and as a delivery man. “If someone needed me to work, I would,” he says. Eric Yeung CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 “I make some money. I want to give it back to the community,” he says. “I like helping people.” One way he does that is through the Chinese Education Promotion Association of Nova Scotia. Known as the CEPA fund, it provides scholarships of between $500 and $1,000 to high school and university students. Yeung, a father of two grown children, recently signed a five-year agreement with St. Mary’s University to provide a scholarship fund of up to $5,000, which is available to both Chinese and Canadian students. He has a similar agreement in place with Dalhousie University. Last year, about eight students were given money through the CEPA fund, this year Yeung expects to help up to 15 students. “After they graduate, I hope they can stay in Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia needs these people,” he says. “We want to make our community stronger.”

Junior Achievers helps create colourful opportunities KATIE INGRAM

Seven months ago, Alice Song was simply a student at Citadel High in Halifax; now she’s a student who has helped run a successful company. Song, 16, says has always been interested in business, but didn’t have the experience or connections. This changed in October when she joined Junior Achievement (JA) Nova Scotia’s Company Program. “I have a lot of ideas, but I don’t exactly have the kick in the butt to get on it,” she says. “And these people came and said ‘join Junior Achievement, you create your own company and we teach you skills’, so I did.”

Junior Achievers “We want students CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 JA is an international organization that helps youth, from the elementary to secondary school level, learn business and economic skills. JA Nova Scotia, which started in 1969, currently has 13 different programs, including the Company Program. Designed for students from grades 9 to 12, the Company Program is an 18-week business venture where students, with help from advisors, create a business and product that is sold within their community. “It’s very hands-on; they end up having a full understanding of … how to manage money and how an actual business works,” says Emma Eagles, manager of marketing and communications for JA Nova Scotia. Along with three other students, Alice helped create Halizans, a combination of the words Halifax and artisans, and sold handmade notebooks. “We advertised it as authentic, handpainted, local art,” says Alice. “Our goal this year was to promote it throughout our community because we recognize art can be very beneficial because you are inspired by it and it’s a bright colour splash in your office.” While JA enabled Alice and her group to have a bit extra money and build a business from the ground up, she finds the benefits are endless. “Our group was kind of shy; we were all first timers except one person, but at the end our advisors made us go to door-to-door,” says Alice. “When people didn’t shut the door in front of us, but behind us because they’ve let us into their homes to share our story, that was really motivating and inspiring.” It has also led to other opportunities. After the program was finished, one of Alice’s new connections asked her if she would help with her friend’s election campaign. “I would have never have gotten there or close to there if it hadn’t been for JA,” says Alice. Even though it is a business-focused program, this is exactly what JA’s goal

One of her ideas is a product that could protect a dog’s feet from salt damage during the winter months. “This is an need in the community I became aware of because I joined the company,” she says. “It taught me to think about what people need, how can they benefit from what we are offering and how is it different from other products.” For more information on JA Nova Scotia and its programs visit: http:// www.janovascotia.ca/

Eat, drink and be happy Halifax’s first izakaya restaurant opens on Queen Street ALLISON LAWLOR The opening of the city’s first izakaya restaurant is an exciting new element to Halifax’s bustling food scene. An informal Japanese gastropub, izakayas have been compared to Irish pubs or tapas bars. They are usually casual places where people gather for a drink and a snack typically after work. With no such venue in Halifax, Sushi Nami Royale stepped up to the plate at their new Queen Street location. “Izakaya is trendy in many different cities,” says Catherine Luo, Atlantic Canada regional manager for Sushi Nami Royale, which has four locations in the Halifax area. “People like those kinds of different dining experiences.” In some izakayas, customers sit on tatami mats and dine from low tables, in the traditional Japanese style, but at the new Halifax restaurant diners can eat at booths or at the wooden bar, located in the centre of the restaurant. There they can choose to have a cup of one of seven different types of sake, a Japanese rice wine, or enjoy a glass of the Japanese beer Sapporo, on tap. “It is more joyful, more relaxed,” says Luo. “You have drinks. You have snacks.” From the open-style kitchen, chef John Sam, who has 30 years of experience in Japanese cuisine, offers customers Japanese snack foods like grilled chicken skewers, bite-sized fried chicken, and a dish like tempura. Wanting to keep the restaurant affordable, a snack

dish costs about $6, says Luo. With the opening of the new izakaya restaurant on Queen, across the street from the Halifax Central Library, Sushi Nami Royale closed its Dresden Row location. Sushi Nami Royale first opened in Halifax more than a decade ago. The new restaurant, which maintains a natural feel to the interior with a lot of wood rather than glass or chrome, also offers menu items customers of Sushi Nami Royale appreciate. Sushi and several different Japanese noodles, priced at just $10 a bowl, as well as teriyaki and grilled foods are available. Being in Nova Scotia, the restaurant also offers customers a twist on the typical lobster dinner. The popular shellfish is served in a special miso soup or with the chef ’s own special sauce. Nova Scotia oysters are also available raw or grilled. “A lot of people know izakaya or sake in Halifax, but they don’t know where to drink it or how,” says Luo. “I believe many people in Halifax want to experience this.” The opening of the izakaya reminds Luo of decades ago when the city’s first sushi restaurants appeared on the food scene- an unfamiliar sight at the time for most Haligonians. “Twenty years ago, people asked how do you eat sushi? Now people are asking how do you izakaya?” she says. It’s simple, she says. Order a beer or a cup of sake and a delicious snack, then eat, drink and be happy.

Tips for international student tenants

THE NEW RANGE ROVER VELAR

As school starts up again, rent is the first thing on everyone’s mind

LISTEN TO YOUR INSTINCTS

LU XU Finding a place to live can be challenging, especially when you are a student with a limited budget and no local connections. If you are an international student, first of all, know that you are not alone. According to the Association of Atlantic Universities, as of this October there are 7,760 full-time students on visas at Nova Scotia universities. Over 6,000 of them go to universities in Halifax and many of them live off campus. Reading a lease can be exhausting, especially in a second language. If you find the contract hard to understand, ask the landlord if you can take the lease with you and get someone to help you understand it. In Nova Scotia, it’s illegal for a landlord to charge an application fee or a security deposit before you enter into a lease. The damage deposit can be no more than half a month’s rent. At the end of the tenancy, if there are no problems and all payments have been made to the landlord as required, the landlord must return your security deposit within 10 days. For more information, look at the Residential Tenancies Guides. If the renting process still seems confusing or intimidating, there is help. The easiest place to turn for help is the school that you are attending. University’s websites and student associations are always good places to go. If you feel like you need additional help beyond your campus, here are some other resources: Access Nova Scotia The Residential Tenancies page on the government of Nova Scotia website provides tenants and landlords with means for settling disputes and is part

“In Nova Scotia, it’s illegal for a landlord to charge an application fee or a security deposit before you enter into a lease.” “在新斯科克省,在签约之 前以任何名义收取所谓申请 费都是违法的。” of the Access Nova Scotia service. You will find, among other things, the newest tenancy policies and a tenancy guide which includes some general do’s and don’ts. If you want more personalized help, it is suggested that you go to one of their offices. Check out this map to find the nearest office around you. Dalhousie Legal Aid If you feel your rights were denied, there are other services that can help. Some students may worry about how legal proceedings would affect their visa or simply don’t have the time and money to file a case, but they shouldn’t. Contrary to popular belief, a small case might not take as long you might expect. In Nova Scotia, there’s a separate court called small claims court that only deals with cases under $25,000 (not including interest and legal costs). And if you are short on money, you could contact a legal aid clinic, like Dalhousie Legal Aid which often deals with tenancy issues. Dal legal aid is a non-for-profit organization that offer free legal service to NOT ONLY students in the Dalhousie University but to all the society. They have a department that specifically deals with tenancy issues.

BOOK A TEST DRIVE Some prefer to listen to their heads, others their hearts. With the New Range Rover Velar, you have the luxury of listening to both. Your head tells you, it’s a Land Rover with legendary go anywhere capability. Then take a look at the stunning exterior silhouette, the perfect waistline with flush deployable door handles and burnished copper details. Now listen. That’s the sound of your heart racing.

In our previous article we learned that the combination of 女 and 也 comes out the personal pronoun 她 (ta-she, her). Many would assume that Chinese characters with a woman symbol represent female person. The assumption is partially correct. For instance, mother is 妈, motherin law is 婆, elder sister is 姐, younger sister is 妹, mother’s sister is 姨, to name just a few. We also know that the character 始, which has the woman symbol (女), originally meant the experience of intercourse for the first time, and “好” meant having given birth to one’s child. It seems that many Chinese characters with a woman symbol represent things related to blood origin. And it actually is. Characters with a woman symbol represent some very ancient family names. We all know Yao Ming, the famous basketball player. His family name “Yao 姚” represents the ancient Yao household. According to Shuo Wen Jie Zi, the earliest dictionary for Chinese characters, ‘Yao’ was a place, where the great leader Shun stayed. Shun then decided to take ‘Yao’ as his family name. There are even more famous family names in China that have the character with ‘woman component’. One of them is ‘姜 Jiang’. Among the Jiang’s, there was Jiang Tai Gong, who lived 3000 years ago and was regarded as one of the war deities. Moreover, the family name of the first emperor, Chin Shi Huang, was

‘嬴ying’. Nowadays, the Chin dynasty is known for constructing the Great Wall and the Terra Cotta Warriors. Apparently, “嬴” has a woman component. Many Chinese characters relating to marriage have a ‘woman component’. For example, ‘matchmaker’ is ‘媒mei’, ‘wife’ is ‘妻qi’. Interestingly, a different Chinese character is used for a woman’s marriage as a ma’s. The verb for ‘ woman marrying man’ is ‘嫁jia’, while ‘man marrying women’ is ‘娶qu’. Nonetheless, both characters have the same woman component. 嫁 is a combination with ‘women + jia(home)’, whereas 娶 is ‘qu (take) + women’. The noun form for marriage is 婚hun’ or ‘姻yin’. 婚 is the combination of ‘women + twilight’. Why ‘twilight’ Again, according to Shuo Wen Jie Zi, the woman part in duality of ‘man & woman’ belongs to ‘Yin’ in Yinyang philosophy, and twilight belongs to the same Yin part in ‘time’ category. On the other hand, ‘姻’ is a combination of ‘woman + depend’, which perfectly reflects the ancient opinion on women’s marriage. In the modern Chinese language, the two characters form one word to express ‘marriage’. From the above observation we can see that whether the word is to represent a family name or a married relationship, a Chinese character with a 女 (woman) symbol often implies origin, or say, gene. Author’s note: The character 女 can represent both ‘woman’ or ’women’, hence they may sometimes appear to be used interchangeably. qinyi@dhu.edu.cn.
