You wouldn’t want a newly-wed bride to bash up new groom, would you? But what if the guys has turned out to be a monster in disguise? If the very notion of dowry and abuse makes you see red, play this unique game called ‘Angry Brides’

hat do you feel like doing to a man who demands dowry? Hit him with your sandals or a broom? Hurl a rolling pin at him or smash him with a saucepan? Now you can express your anger towards dowry-demanding louts in the form of a popular Facebook game termed ‘Angry Brides’. As the name suggests, the game is modelled on the lines of the very popular game ‘Angry Birds’. But here, instead of hitting the pigs who take away the birds’ eggs, you strike the grooms who ask for dowry. Angry Brides, an initiative to raise awareness against dowry in India was launched earlier this year by the matrimonial site shaadi. com. This anti-dowry game hosted on shaadi.com’s Facebook page has received an incredible response from people around the world. It has already got 5,13,943 ‘likes’ and counting. The game has been conceptualised, designed and developed in-house by the shaadi.com team. To play the game and take a stand against dowry all you need to do is to log into your Facebook account, go to the ‘shaadi’ page and click on ‘Angry Brides’ link. The home page shows a red-clad, eight-armed woman resembling a powerful

female Hindu goddess with ndu u go od dd ‘weapons’ in her hand. The game involves three grooms with a heavy dowry price tag. The players need to strike the dodging grooms with a weapon of their choice. And there is a wide array to choose from, including a stiletto shoe, a frying pan, broomstick, saucepan, and so on. Each hit decreases the ‘price’ of the groom and adds the saved money to the player’s anti-dowry fund, which the players can choose to publish on their Facebook wall or tweet to their timeline. According to Ram Bhamidi, Senior Vice President and Head of Online Marketing of the portal shaadi.com, this game is their way of bringing the nuisance of dowry into spotlight. “We condemn this menace and have consistently run campaigns on the social media forum to help create awareness about the seriousness of this issue. shaadi.com has always believed that marriage is an institution of love, where there is a place for togetherness, mutual understanding, family values and emotional support but not for dowry. We atShaadi.com are encouraged by the overwhelming global response received by Angry Brides. We are now even

more inspired to spread the message of non-tolerance to every single person that could be affected by dowry. We are, therefore, running a Facebook contest to spread further awareness about the nuisance of dowry. Let’s make a difference,” he says. Angry Brides, has been played by over 500,000 people in over 35 countries. What is even more remarkable is that over 2,00,000 of the total players are women. This strongly reflects the changing approach ofwomen against the social evil of dowry. As homemaker Papia Sengupta puts it, “I have played the game. It’s a nice way to bring about awareness without preaching it. I think it has gathered so many ‘likes’ because there are many people like us who hate the dowry system. Moreover, the fact that it is a take-off from the very popular ‘Angry Birds’ has helped to make this game an instant hit.”

t may just be an irritating itch but could lead to fatalities too. That’s the power of a mosquito bite! Moreover, with dengue now spreading far and wide, the menace of the mosquito needs to be tackled on a war footing—something that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been conscious about, for a long time. However, it definitely is not an easy task for them. A mosquito isn’t easy to find and destroy. “Mostly they breed in large numbers in areas such as construction sites, empty water tanks, terraces of buildings, etc. There are approximately 2,000 species of mosquitoes worldwide. No matter where you go, be it the Arctic Circle or somewhere on the Equator, there’s no escaping the mosquitoes,” says a PMC health department official. For the past many years, the department has

The campaign, however, has not been able to make a significant impact, with most citizens still being unaware of the facilities and programmes provided by the PMC. From Monday to Friday, workers spray pesticides in their sub-areas for the control of larvae. Every ward typically has around 30 to 40 breeding spots where mosquitos are found in greater numbers. On Saturdays, the workers fog the riverside. As per official claims, a contingent of approximately 250 PMC workers has so far been able to achieve 100 per cent mosquito eradication on the banks. The department also circulates an official notice enlisting precautions to be observed at construction sites, residences and spots where the possibility of mosquito breeding exists.
