Under the directions of the PCB President, the restaurants, bakeries and eateries operating in these areas were inspected by the

officer Khandare addressed the various shortcomings relating to health and hygiene, and also offered the owners useful tips for improvement of such eateries.

The findings “During our inspections, we thoroughly examined the hygienic conditions and cleanliness of the kitchen and maintenance of service rooms of the restaurants/ bakeries,” said Khandare. “In a few cases, we found that the premises lacked proper ventilation arrangements, owing to which smoke stayed bottled in. he Sepulchre Cemetry on PuneSolapur Road seems to pervade the calm of the place—the hopes, the dreams, the happiness and the concerns of all those who rest there. A young woman, eager and excited and nervous about her fiancé and her parents meeting for the first time in faraway England; a young couple on their honeymoon trip to Italy; a busy middle-aged man who was on his first vacation in 11 years; were some of the people on the Alitalia flight AZ771.

July 7, 1962 Flight AZ771 was a scheduled flight between Sydney and Rome via Darwin, Singapore, Bangkok, Mumbai, Karachi and Tehran. It departed Bangkok for Bombay. At 18:20, the crew contacted Mumbai Approach and received clearance to descend from FL350 to FL200. Five minutes later, further clearance was given to drop to 4,000 feet. In preparation for the runway 27 approach, the crew reported that they would make a 360 degrees turn over the Outer Marker. Last radio contact was at 18:39.

z JUNNAR India-Alitalia jet airliner, which crashed into a hilltop 60 miles east of Bombay killing all 94 aboard, apparently caught fire in flight. The wreckage was scattered over the vast area of a hill 20 miles over muddy, almostimpassable roads from this village near Bombay. The cockpit wings and fuselage were split open but the name Alitalia was still visible. The plane parts showed sign of fire, cushions and the airliner remains near the crash were burned. Officials made a cautious suggestion the pilot may have attempted to put the turning plane down on what appeared to be a plateau but was really a hilltop. A search party set out at dawn Sunday from Junnar to the village 20 miles away. It was 4 pm before they were able to hack through the wreckage.

(as it appeared in Galveston Daily News, dated July 9,1962)

The DC-8 had descended below minimum safe altitude and struck the Davandyachi hill at an elevation of approximately 3,600 ft. All lives cut tragically short in one accident.

Picking up the pieces The flight went missing and local police got the first inkling when a farm labourer found a rain-soaked Lebanese pound in a village four miles away from Nimgiri hills. Pune Police Inspector General A G Rajyadhyaksha was in charge and it took almost six hours for the search party to reach the actual site. From the

wreckage that was scattered across almost 20 miles, the remains were brought to Pune. The anxiously-waiting relatives were informed. ‘It was like he had a premonition about it. He asked me to look after the three children if something should happen to him. And he also mentioned his will and his trustees almost as an afterthought.’ This is what Fong Ax Soo had to say about Lee Chew Kuen, Managing Director Asia Insurance Co. Ltd., who was escorting his two daughters to the Raffles school in Switzerland along with his wife. Guglielmo Proiette (30) and his

bride (19) of two weeks were on their honeymoon to Italy that day. Dr Frank Dunworth (35) was scheduled to lecture at the University of California Berkley—the first Australian dentist to be invited to lecture in the United States. Pune became the final resting place for many of these people. Well-known journalist Harry David, who was a young schoolboy, recalls that there was a beautiful solemn ceremony at St Patrick’s cathedral. “It was during the monsoons and they had a lot of problems getting all the remains to Pune,” he says. One of the worst-ever airdisasters of the time, the event was covered by newspapers from the world over, he recalls.

Bonded by fate Many of the people who now rest side by side probably never had Pune in their plans. The Dunns, an airline Captain and his fifteen-year-old daughter, who also aspired to join as crew, share the memorial with the Lees, who left behind three young children. How action is taken z Restaurants/bakeries violating the PCB’s hygiene norms are issued notices by the civic body. A certain timeframe is allocated to the concerned parties to work on the issues objected upon during the inspections. On not accomplishing the changes as ordered, according to the instructions of the PCB, strict action is taken on the restaurants. health staff of Cantonment Board. The aim was to ascertain optimum level of hygiene and sanitation and to safeguard the health of consumers from all strata. PCB health officer Sanjay Khandare and Southern Command Lt Col Rakhi Dhavan, who is also the Station Health Officer (SHO), inspected various restaurants and bakeries such as Mona Food, George Restaurant, Persian Bakery and Café Ramsar.

To get this certificate, workers must undergo a medical checkup, conducted by the SHO. “During the inspection, those workers found without medical fitness certificate from the SHO were asked to produce it within a month’s time to PCB health department,” said Khandare.
