Pune’s mid-day meal scheme often comes under fire due to ocassional incidents of mass food poisoning thanks to lack of hygiene and food safety at homes of self-help groups where it is cooked. Pune plans to have a centralised kitchen by June. Life 365 highlights one such ideal kitchen in Hyderabad

Hyderabad has done it.

E

arly last month, 135 students fell prey to food poisoning after consuming idli sambar served to them under the mid-day meal (MDM) programme of the State government in the Pune Municipal Corporation-run girls primary school at Janta Vasahat near Parvati. After this incident took place, PMC’s health department studied the case and compiled a report. Here are a few details of the report: In all, 250 students had the meal on that day, out of which 135 students suffered from food poisoning. These children complained of

headache, stomach pain and loose motions. They were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals, namely Poona Hospital (87 children), Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital (29), Global Hospital (18) and Chaitnya Hospital (1) for treatment. The food items were prepared by Sai Mahila Vyavsay, a self-help group. Following the incident, the PMC suspended the group’s license. Luckily, there were no serious repercussions to the incident. The test results revealed the presence of ‘E Coli’ bacteria in the idlis. The police also filed an FIR against four people of the self-help group under clause 138 and arrested

them. The accused was charged under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and asked to pay Rs 20,000 in fines. Food poisoning due to midday meals is quite common in Pune, as there is no hygiene and food safety control over the self help groups that cook food. The PMC has assured that a centralised kitchen (which is already in operation in various cities across the country) would be set up by June but has no details of the same as of now. Hyderabad has revolutionised mid-day meals through a centralised, hygienic, state-of-the-art kitchen and well-organised transport to deliver them to schools.

Life 365 looks at the approach that worked in in Hyderabad... Between 11.30 am and 12 noon, 13-year-old Prashant’s attention wanders towards the classroom door because he knows it is time for the noon meal to arrive. When the meal arrives, he and his friends excitedly get their plates and assemble in a line. Today, the menu includes tamarind rice and curry which happens to be his favourite. In a matter of time, all his friends and classmates take their meals and sit in neat rows inside their classroom. Some of them are enjoying mango pickle along with the rice, while some wish that it was tomato rice instead. The joy of having

a full meal is reflected on each child’s face and many ask for a second helping or even a serving to pack and take home.

In 2001, a revised policy altered the Midday Meal Programme (MDM) launched by the Government of India in 1995, henceforth making it compulsory for the meal to be a hot cooked one. The mode of implementation was left to the discretion of the States.

the MDM programme in Hyderabad. With its first kitchen in Hyderabad, launched in 2003, Naandi has now successfully replicated its standardised procedures of preparing, packaging, transporting and delivering nutrient-rich meals using state-of-theart technology, supported by proper monitoring and feedback mechanisms across five states – Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Chattisgarh

Use your PAN card carefully Is the PAN card number then becoming a tool for benami transactions?

AN card data has become essential for certain transactions, which makes PAN card identity theft more likely than ever. Waving a PAN (Permanent Account Number) card as a form of identity, when such a document is required with a photograph, has become second nature to many of us. Keeping a laminated copy as a spare, and placing the original in safe-keeping, is the strategy adopted by many. But now, with more and more transactions requiring a copy of a PAN card, or at the very least the number, it appears that the role of this essential piece of plastic, and its consequences, is

rapidly changing, in a way and manner not anticipated by the authorities. If you are using it to book Tatkal tickets, then you have to provide the number. This number then reflects on the booking chart, which is displayed openly on the carriage, at the departure station and elsewhere. In some cities and states, hotels demand copies of PAN cards. Similarly, if running up huge bills at restaurants, and paying in cash—you can be asked for a PAN card. Then at jewellers, second-hand car dealers, property brokers, landlords, tenants, and many more entities, they all want a copy of your PAN card. Travel

This PAN card number then becomes a tool for benami transactions in a variety of hands. And it appears that this problem is growing very rapidly.
