onavala has long been known as a tourist destination, famous for its stunning views and the trademark chikki. The famous hills have now been adorned with yet another tourist attraction— the Celebrity Wax Museum, based on London’s famous Madam Tussauds, the museum’s marketing slogan—‘Why go to London’— certainly does suggest that it wants to be recognised as India’s own Taussauds. Lonavala is easy to get to from Pune, located just 64 km away, with a journey time of around an hour up the Mumbai-Pune expressway. Reaching the museum is an easy task, although it is located not exactly in Lonavala, but in the peripheral area of Warsoli.

The museum is the brainchild of Sunil Kanadalloor, a 37-yearold artist from Kerala, who has made in excess of 50 wax models so far. The museum has been modelled on the principles adopted by its more famous kin—the original London attraction. There are numerous celebrity models to wow visitors here, including Michael Jackson, Kapil Dev, Rajiv Gandhi, A R Rahman and former world leaders such as

Lonavala, spread across a 2,500-sq-ft area, is by far his most ambitious project so far. For those who can only dream of making it to the Madam Tussaud Museum in London, the Lonavala Wax Museum, with its marvellous wax models, is the next best thing.
A healthy mix
Saddam Hussein and Adolf Hitler, and there are many more in the making. Each model takes approximately one month to make. Kanadalloor already has two museums in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where he has 25 wax sculptures of various South Indian politicians and celebrities. However the Museum at
Kanadalloor is a specialist wax sculptor and his models in Lonavala encompass not just international celebrities—past and present—but also some very prominent people from the modern era. Kanadalloor is an advocate of having a mix of celebrities which people can relate to. Hence, one will find politicians such as Bal and Raj Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, alongside a host of Bollywood stars such as Aamir Khan and modern cricketers such as superstar Sachin Tendulkar, all lined up to as the major attractions.
