n Maharashtra, ‘Kojagiri Purnima’ celebrations under the full moon is a popular social tradition, which falls sometime in October. However, basking under tonight’s (May 6) moonlight might just be more exciting! Tonight, the moon is the closest to the Earth. States Dr Arvind Paranjpye, Director, Nehru Planetarium, “The distance between the Earth and the moon will be 356955 km. It is very interesting to note that tonight, the moon will set in the western horizon a few minutes before sunrise and then it will rise again on the same evening about an hour after the sunset. The full moon of November 28th will be the farthest full moon of 2012. On that day, the moon will be 406,349 km from the Earth. Thus the full moon of May 6 will be about 11 per cent bigger than the full moon of Nov 28 this year. However, one cannot perceive this change easily with the naked eye, especially when the two events are placed so far apart in time.”

Why does the moon look bigger or smaller? z It was Johannes Kepler, the 17th Century astronomer who discovered that the planets do not orbit the sun in circular orbits but they move in elliptical orbits. It was not just the planets but all the freely rotating bodies around each other, like satellite of planets around their own planets or even two stars around each other. Thus the moon also orbits the Earth in an elliptical orbit. That is to say that the distance of the moon from the earth changes continuously. And as a result of this the apparent size of the moon also changes in a systematic fashion.

Does it affect tides? z The tides are affected by the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun. On a full moon, the sun, the moon and the Earth are almost in one straight line The event is called sygyzy ( pronounced-sizigi). With the super moon, the moon is close to the Earth and also in line with the sun, this affects the high tides to some extent.

ave you have ever wondered what women do on ‘a girl’s night out’? They laugh, eat, chat, giggle some more and decide to help others in need! From good times come the best ideas. ‘Cooking for a cause’ is the catch phrase for a group of 40-something women, well-settled in the USA, who believe that ‘Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something’. “It all began as a casual conversation on our ladies night out. We are a group of nine friends who meet up every couple of months for a night out for just us girls. Dinner, gossip, kids, husbands, fashion and laughter have always been a part of the ladies night out”, says Manjusha Inamdar. “But we felt something was missing. Sandhya mentioned a charity that her brother had started in India and that is what got us started,” she adds. While they all volunteer for different causes in the US, they wanted to help in India as well. The distance ruled out volunteering or any hands-on help. Also, they had full lives with work, family,

It’s done all over z Cooking for a cause is a way to raise funds for any charity anywhere in the world. Very popular in the USA,it is done by housewives and famous chefs. The event is advertised for participation. The meal can be of the simple homecooked variety or include gastronomical delights. The money collected is used for various charities. You too can do it in Pune with your group of friends! pets, etc., and the charities had to be fitted in. “Years of cooking for friends, family and celebrations have made it easy for us to cook for crowds and balance it with our everyday life,” says Manjusha. So Sushama Joglekar, Sandhya Nadkarni, Ashwini Satav, Pradnya Patil, Sangeeta Pradhan, Anjali Sontakke, Nisha Karambelkar, Vineeta Puranik and Manjusha Inamdar began ‘Cooking for a cause’ and sold meals they put together at various functions. It could be a Diwali fete or a Holi night or just a local meet. The collections vary depending on the crowd and what is

offered, but they manage to collect at least $500 (Rs 25,000) each time. The first charity they donated $900 (Rs 45,000) to was the Abhir Foundation in Pune. It is named after Abhir Rege who at age 15, fought leukemia very bravely and never let his physical pain deter his zeal and spirit. In his lasting memory, Abhir Foundation helps children suffering from cancer. The Foundation provides financial aid for people who need it and has tie-ups with vendors and manufacturers to procure the expensive medicines at a discount. It provides guidance during this extremely difficult

time and also arranges entertainment programmes for kids in the hospitals. The foundation also runs cancer detection camps in various neighbourhoods to help with early detection and cure. Some of the other causes that have benefitted from their cooking are Vatsalya Orphanage which takes care of orphans and facilitates adoptions, SOFOSH, caring for physically and mentally challenged children who never get adopted, Neehar which helps rehabilitate children of prostitutes, Samtol Foundation that works for the rehabilitation of children living on railway platforms. They take turns at deciding which charity should benefit and so everyone gets to help causes closest to their heart. So now on a girl’s night out, they still giggle, laugh, chat and eat, but they also think of who they can help next, living the maxim that ‘Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.’
