Steve Weir H e a d C oa c h // 8 t h S e a s o n Steve Weir has put his stamp on the Cleveland State men’s and women’s golf programs during his seven years at the helm. During his tenure, the men’s squad has captured four Horizon League titles and four NCAA appearances, while the 14-year old women’s program has shown growth each year into a league contender. A tireless recruiter, Weir has continually brought in highly-decorated players, including several allstate selections and student-athletes who have competed in and won prestigious tournaments. In his seven seasons at the helm, Weir has developed 19 first team All-Horizon League players, including Jake Scott who claimed medalist honors at the league championship in 2008 and 2009, Kent Monas, the 2011 Horizon League Player of the Year and Andrew Bailey who was the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Horizon League Player of the Year. Last year, Weir led the men’s squad to the Horizon League title, while the women’s Horizon League Men’s Awards squad finished fifth. The men went wire-to-wire and boasted three players who finUnder Steve Weir ished in the top-seven. The Vikings finished 10th at the NCAA regionals, the best finish Player of the Year in program history. Jake Scott (2009) Two years ago, Weir guided the men’s squad to a runner-up finish at the league Kent Monas (2011) championship, while the women’s squad placed third, the second best finish in proAndrew Bailey (2012, 2013, 2014) gram history. Newcomer of the Year That came on the heels of a pair of youthful squads finishing in the top-four at the Andrew Bailey (2011) 2012 Horizon League Championship with the men - featuring two sophomores and one freshman - finishing third and the women’s team - with four sophomores and one League Tournament Medalist Jake Scott (2008, 2009) freshman - placing fourth. Andrew Bailey (2011) The 2010-11 season saw Weir lead the men’s squad to the Horizon League Michael Klaric (2011) Championship - the squad’s fourth league title in the six years, while helping the women place fourth with a team that featured three freshmen and two sophomores. First Team All-League Andrew Bailey (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) Under Weir, the men’s team has enjoyed unprecedented success, capturing the Michael Balcar (2013, 2014) 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2014 Horizon Doug Barber (2008) League titles and advancing to the Kyle Cobb (2010) NCAA Regional Championship all Michael Klaric (2011, 2012) four years. Kent Monas (2011) Jon Riemer (2013) In addition, seven players have Jake Scott (2008, 2009) earned medalist honors under the direction of Weir, while the 2007-08 All Tournament Team squad set the school record for lowest Andrew Bailey (2011, 2013, 2014) Michael Balcar (2013, 2014) round, firing 277 during the first and Brendan Byrne (2014) second rounds at the IPFW Fall Michael Klaric (2010, 2011) Classic. Kent Monas (2008) At the 2011 league championship, Jon Riemer (2012) Bailey and Michael Klaric tied for coJake Scott (2008, 2009) medalist honors. Horizon League Women’s Awards Weir has also led the women’s proUnder Steve Weir gram to new heights during the last seven years, guiding the squad to a Newcomer of the Year second place finish at the league tourAriel Sparrow (2010) nament in 2009, the best showing in First Team All-League program history. That was never more apparent than in 2009 when the women’s Ariel Sparrow (2011, 2013) team captured the “Best of the Best” Team Award at the John Konstantinos Athletic Mallory Wyderka (2008, 2009) Academic Honors Luncheon in April. The women’s squad once again captured the award in 2014 after the team combined for a 3.511 GPA. Weir joined the CSU golf staff as an assistant coach in 2007 with a familiarity to the Viking program, having served as an assistant coach to the men’s and women’s squads in 2006-07. He has also been the Assistant Golf Professional at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinkley since April, 2007. He had an outstanding collegiate career, spending time at Kent State and BaldwinWallace before enrolling at CSU in September of 2005. In his lone golf season as a Viking, Weir earned first team All-Horizon League honors in 2006 and was a two-time Horizon League Golfer of the Week. He was second on the team in stroke average (75.3), carding a school-record, eightunder-par 63 en route to a runner-up finish at the Belmont Intercollegiate. Weir also finished second at the Dayton Spring Invitational, helping the Vikings win the team title by eight shots. Weir was a large factor in the Vikings claiming the 2006 Horizon League Championship and advancing to the NCAA regionals, shooting rounds of 70-72-74 (216) and finishing 11th overall. In 2005, Weir captured the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship and also advanced to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. At Baldwin-Wallace, Weir holds the best season average in school-history when he posted 75.2 strokes per round in the fall of 2003, including a low round of 70.
