Leading the way were alumni who committed, and re-committed, to the Campaign for Claflin University. Major gift donors included William (’72) and Annette B. Johnson with $100,000; Doris Bradley (’64) and two anonymous alumni donors with $50,000 each; and the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Alumni Chapter and Georgette McKenzie (’65) with $10,000 gifts. paign goal with $8.9 million raised to date. “Our alumni are truly invested in Claflin University,” said Rev. Whittaker V. Middleton, vice president for Institutional Advancement. “Their support is not only fueling this campaign, but gaining national recognition with a 52.2 percent annual giving rate, one of the highest rates in the country. They never hesitate to give back, and their efforts benefit this University and her students.”

Parents Invest in Claflin The Claflin University Parent’s Campaign is also continuing to thrive. To date, parents have surpassed their $50,000 capital campaign goal and have raised $94,000 toward their new $100,000 goal.

Student Giving Tops $157,000 Claflin students continued to chip away at their $200,000 Capital Campaign goal by giving more than $4,234.07 to the University at Student Philanthropy Day. Additionally, seniors gave $7,110 for a total of $11,344.07 this year. During the festivities on April 22 in Panther Plaza, seven campus organizations presented checks to the University for the Capital Campaign. Students have already surpassed their original goal of $100,000, having raised a total of $157,000 toward the Capital Campaign thus far. Student Philanthropy Day is dedicated to students giving back to the University and its future endeavors on the campus. “This was a great time for students to contribute to the Capital Campaign and for the University to show its appreciation for all that they have done to help us in working toward our goal,” said Allen Jackson, director of Claflin University’s Annual Fund/ Alumni Affairs.

Heritage Society Gifts Increase Dramatically This year, non-cash and planned gifts to Claflin University leaped from $73,000 last year to $452,000. This outstanding support was recognized during the Heritage Society Luncheon on May 8 in Ministers’ Hall. Fourteen members were honored during the event, with giving levels ranging from $1,000 to $100,000. A planned gift includes life insurance policies, wills, in-kind gifts, real property and other forms of irrevocable, non-cash gifts. als who give generously to the University each year. “This year, we saw a 419 percent increase in giving in this category,” said Leandra Hayes, assistant vice president for major and planned gifts. “What this shows us is that people are realizing that planned and non-cash gifts are a great way to give back to the University.” Gifts included a $100,000 life insurance policy from the Central Savannah River Area Alumni Chapter, software and products from Microsoft, advertising from The Times and Democrat, and gifts to provide resources to the H.V. Manning Library from Rev. John Culp and Rev. Whittaker V. Middleton.
