NEWS AND UPDATES FOR THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR CLAFLIN UNIVERSITY IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES

Corporate Investment SCE&G Donates $100,000 for Student Scholarships

Claflin News Claflin Hosts Clyburn Book Signing Congressman James E. Clyburn was at Claflin University on Sunday, June 15, to sign copies of his memoir, Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black. Ministers’ Hall was filled with individuals eager to have their books signed by the congressman.

South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE&G), a SCANA Company, has donated $100,000 to Claflin to establish the SCE&G Scholarship Program at the University. This scholars program will provide scholarship assistance, career mentorship and leadership development training to qualified students. Five scholarships will be awarded over a four-year period. The scholarships will be used to help satisfy students’ unmet financial needs. “We appreciate SCANA’s continued investment and support of Claflin University,” said President Henry N. Tisdale. “This partnership was developed and has flourished thanks to the leadership of Board of Trustees Chair Paul Fant and the Board

of Trustees Development Chair James Bennett. The funds will provide assistance to deserving students.” In addition to receiving the funds, students will also participate in an annual scholarship event sponsored by SCE&G, as well as attend mentoring sessions, leadership development workshops conducted by SCE&G executives, tour SCE&G headquarters and facilities, and apply for internships. SCE&G is the principal subsidiary of SCANA Corporation, an energy-based holding company whose businesses include regulated electric and natural gas utility operations, telecommunications and other nonregulated energy-related businesses.

“It is fitting that we’re holding today’s celebration here in Ministers’ Hall,” said Janice Marshall, ’70, a Claflin University Board of Trustees member and the executive director of the James E. Clyburn Research and Scholarship Foundation. In addition to Clyburn’s commitment to education, Marshall said, “Historic preservation is another of his passions, and this building was lovingly restored with federal resources he secured.” Marshall is also a member of the Board of Visitors. Claflin President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale said Clyburn is a great friend of the University. “In fact, he has been a tireless servant and friend of higher education throughout his career as an elected official,” Tisdale said. “I say with tremendous appreciation to the Congressman that Claflin University has benefitted from this commitment and his friendship. In the book, Clyburn tells in his own inspirational words how an African-American male from the Jim Crow South was able to beat the odds to achieve great success. “I wrote this book to take into account all of the challenges that I’ve had, and how I have dealt with those challenges in hopes that children coming along will benefit from them,” Clyburn said.

Alumni Chapters Making Signature

Gifts

Alumni chapters are responding to a charge from the Office of Alumni Affairs and the Annual Fund to host Signature Events that would raise $10,000 or more for the University.

Mr. James A. Bennett, General Chair

Among them is the Orangeburg County Chapter of the Claflin University International Alumni Association which presented a $10,000 donation in June. The funds were raised during their alumni and friends breakfast. Other chapters planning events include the Upper Pee Dee Alumni Chapter, the Central Savannah River Area’s Chapter, the Washington D.C. Alumni Chapter, the Lake City Chapter, and the Greater New York Chapter. According to Allen Jackson, director of the Annual Fund/Alumni Relations, other chapters are in the planning stages and will kick off Signature Events next year. “We made the charge, and our alumni chapters have truly responded,” he said. “Signature Events provide a way for chapters to get involved and take ownership of their fundraising efforts. It’s a fun and exciting way to give back.”
