Leadership Giving Gifts Exceed $1.5 Million Claflin recently celebrated individuals who have given above and beyond to the University during the 2014 Leadership Giving Luncheon. More than $1.5 million was received in leadership gifts this year – a 52 percent increase over last year’s total.

Leading the way was this year’s Leadership Giving Special Honoree Doris S. Bradley, whose contribution of more than $50,000 to the University this past year classifies her as a Kennedy Fellow.

“When I came back to Claflin, I was really astounded by the work that Dr. Tisdale had done,” she said. “That was an inspiration to me to give back.”

Bradley graduated from Claflin with a bachelor’s degree in English in 1964. She went on to earn a master’s degree from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, in teaching the culturally disadvantaged in an urban environment. She taught for 40 years and served the Cleveland Public School District in various capacities, ending her career by pre-

Abney, Jolley Foundations Gifts Support Scholarships for Upstate Students Claflin University received $100,000 from longtime supporter the Abney Foundation and $30,000 from a new partnership with the Jolley Foundation. The funds from both organizations support scholarships for students from the Upstate region of South Carolina. The Abney Foundation has celebrated a strong and successful relationship with Claflin University for over 26 years. The foundation has collectively contributed over $1 million to the University in scholarship aid. Nearly 900 Greenville area

Claflin students have received need-based scholarships as a result of this impactful partnership. We are grateful for the Abney Foundation’s commitment and continued support of Claflin and its students. The Jolley Foundation’s gift will benefit incoming freshman from the Greenville County area. This newly formed partnership will help to fill the financial gap for students in need of additional aid to satisfy their tuition and fees. Based on need, scholarships will be awarded to students at the $1,000 and above level.


Alumni Give Back During Homecoming The Lake City Alumni Chapter of Claflin University presented a $10,000 check to Claflin during Homecoming. The funds are proceeds from the chapter’s first Signature Event, the inaugural Visions of Excellence Banquet, which paid tribute and recognizes the accomplishments of some community visionaries and trailblazers in the areas of religion and ministry. Honored were Rev. Jonathan Brown, Rev. Matthew Brown, Rev. Kenneth L. Gibson, Rev. Mack McClam and Rev. Larry D. McCutcheon. “We looked at our signature event as an opportunity to honor and say thank you to members of the clergy in our community,” Lake City Chapter President Kenneth Feagins said. “We are so appreciative for the tremendous amount of support we received from the community, and the dedication and hard work of the alumni chapter members. I think this will become a signature event in the Lake City area.”

The Claflin University International Alumni Association also presented a check to Claflin for $10,000. The CUIAA makes a gift to the University each year. The funds support student scholarships and campus activities. “We are very fortunate to have alumni who care enough about their alma mater to give back,” said Claflin Vice President for Institutional Advancement Rev. Whittaker V. Middleton. “Alumni giving at this rate encourages others to give. Their loyalty and support continues to assist us in sustaining a quality education for our students.”

Community Gift Benefits FOCUS 100 Fund Jimmy Jones Toyota in Orangeburg presented a check to Claflin University President Henry N. Tisdale in October through its Community of Caring Program. Customers who purchase cars are given the opportunity to donate to local charities and organizations.

The $2,800 donation benefits the FOCUS 100 Fund, which provides emergency financial assistance to students in need.
