40 YEARS

A PUBLICATION OF CROSSLAND CONSTRUCTION COMPANY • WINTER 2017-18

Red Iron’s Corner My dad, Ivan, Sr., started this company in 1977 in our family garage. Most of you know the story – we still tell it proudly and often because it reminds us of who we are at our very core. Fast-forward 40 years, and my dad’s voice still rings loud and clear. I am humbled by how far we have come as a company. It is an honor and a blessing to have more than 1500 talented and dedicated men and women in our ranks. Our history of success is credited to our hardworking employees who made one man’s dream a reality. Some of you have been with us from the beginning, and others for just a short while. But, all of you have contributed to where we are today, and, as you read this, we hope you to take a moment to recognize that contribution and the role you have had in the company’s success. Crossland’s ability to evolve and innovate will remain critical as we work to meet our client’s expectations in the future. Old Man Winter has come and gone, and all of you stop at nothing, trudge forward, and meet those deadlines despite difficult conditions. This is what makes us stand out as a company and keeps us producing the quality projects our customers have come to expect. That feeling of family, all of us belonging and working together as one, is the key to moving us forward through the next 40 years. Since our start, we have grown tremendously, and I believe that growth comes from our roots. It is my heartfelt hope that our company’s culture continues to stem from the foundation my dad so carefully laid. I want to personally thank all of our employees, partners, and customers, we couldn’t do what we do without you. I’m very excited about what’s in store for Crossland Companies - the future looks bright!

Ivan Crossland, Jr. C.E.O.

THE AMERICAN DREAM One Man, One Dream, and Unwavering Determination Crossland Construction began in the rural farming and mining community of Columbus, Kansas in 1977. Ivan Crossland, Sr. set up shop in his family’s home garage while his wife, Virginia, ran the office and four of his six sons worked beside him. A harsh economy did not hinder Ivan’s determination to build a solid construction company that could support Virginia and their ten children. His passionate pursuit of The American Dream, fueled by a rare combination of tenacity and humility, set him apart from the competition. He understood it wasn’t enough to build high quality projects, but that it was equally important to build high quality relationships. There was no obstacle – no project – that Ivan, Sr. couldn’t handle. This unique corporate ideology became the very cornerstone of Crossland Construction. And, our success is due, in large part, to the principles that perpetuate this ideology – Trust, Responsibility, Integrity, and Passion. Ivan, Sr. lived by these four things, both professionally and privately, and carefully nurtured relationships with all those fortunate enough to know him. With an outpouring of love, reverence, and appreciation, Ivan was laid to rest in 2002, but his spirit and characteristic method of doing business still proudly pulses through our Crossland corridors.

Humble Beginnings...

Today, having learned by example, his sons, a handful of experienced leaders, and an incredible workforce continue to build our legacy. Now a billion dollar firm, we are ranked among the nation’s top contractors in the US and the World. Business partnerships still bloom into friendships and we take pride in the fact that nearly half of our jobs come from repeat clients. More than ever, we cherish Ivan, Sr’s. formula for success, building communities and relationships that will stand the test of time…that’s the Crossland Way.

A YEAR OF

Celebrations

Red balloons filled the skies in honor of our 40th anniversary Crossland kicked off our 40th anniversary celebration in August with balloon releases at eight office locations. Each event was fun and unique, made memorable by the personalities of the participants. “Filming the balloon releases was a great project. It’s always good to see us come together to celebrate our history and our future. That’s really what this was about, and I enjoyed being part of that,” said Collin Crossland. As the balloons rose, many voiced wonder in just how far they would fly. There’s no doubt Ivan, Sr. felt the same way when he turned the company over to his sons. And, there’s no doubt he thought, with confidence and pride, “the sky’s the limit.”

40 angels for our 40th anniversary In the spirit of the season, and with gratitude for 40 years of prosperity, Crossland Companies challenged their employees to adopt children in need through the Salvation Army Angel Tree program in Joplin, Missouri. With a goal of 40 sponsorships, to be matched by the company for a total of 80, our people eagerly rose to the occasion; 63 Angel Tree adoptions were claimed. Crossland Companies generously adopted an additional 37 children, for a grand total of 100 Angel Tree adoptions. Gifts came pouring in to the corporate office in Columbus and were delivered to the Joplin Salvation Army just in time for Christmas. The Angel Tree initiative provides gifts to children of struggling families who have applied for assistance through the Salvation Army’s Social Services program. We were honored to purchase Christmas presents for these precious children. Thank you to all who participated. May you each be richly blessed in 2018. 6

A Night of Gratitude and Celebration In 2017, Crossland celebrated our 40th Anniversary. In honor of this tremendous milestone, we gathered together on Saturday, December 9, at The Embassy Suites Convention Center in Rogers, Arkansas. As Bennie, Ivan, Curt, and Patrick took turns addressing the audience, there was a palpable, collective sense of achievement. Videos streamed across the screen with photos of projects we’ve completed over the years and with photos of the Crossland families, without whose support none of those projects, old or new, would have been possible. During holiday parties passed, we’ve faithfully recalled our founder with a reverence that is felt by every generation of Crossland worker. The award acceptance speeches, without fail, talk of spouses and family members, and their steadfast support. So, when the event planning began in early February, a decision was made. The annual party would be an Anniversary Party, and the accolades would be centered around a very special lady. One who stood by her husband’s side, raised ten children, helped him start a business, and has carried Ivan’s legacy boldly and bravely far beyond his earthly years. This year, we would celebrate Virginia Crossland. Family matriarch and loving mother, and, at the age of 85, still Crossland’s biggest cheerleader. As Curt and Patrick shared the stage, they spoke of their mother, recounting stories from their childhoods and speaking of her with respect and

8

admiration. Patrick walked over to the center table with the microphone. Small in stature, but mighty in spirit, Virginia stood to address nearly 1600 employees and family gathered in the Convention Center. With an ever-present grace, she thanked us. With heart, she spoke of her husband. And, with only a few words, she brought the house down. Thousands rose to their feet to applaud her. Our matriarch. Our cheerleader. Virginia Crossland.

“When I come to these Christmas parties and I see all of these people out there, I would love to shake everybody’s hand, or give them a hug and a kiss! I really appreciate you. Every one of you. Thank you for working with us.”

“Dad considered each one of his employees family. Money wasn’t everything to Dad. It was how well you did the job and how fast you could accomplish it. Ivan was always so happy when we took the next step to success. He never said anything about it, but I know he was very proud. As for the company today, he would be as proud as anybody can get. When I come to these Christmas parties and I see all of these people out there, I would love to shake everybody’s hand, or give them a hug and a kiss! I really appreciate you. Every one of you. Thank you for working with us,” said Mrs. Crossland. This really was a year of reflection. Of simultaneous humility and pride. Of joy, hope, and excitement for what’s ahead. As we look to the future as a family, we see a company making a difference – together. Our foundation is solid, our people are second-to-none. In everything we’ve done, in everything we will do, one thing’s for sure – we’ll do it The Crossland Way.

Chance Tucker, Sr. Project Manager for Crossland Heavy Contractors, accepted the prestigious Pinnacle Award, one of two awards given at the ceremony.

This year, we celebrated Virginia Crossland. Family matriarch and loving mother, and, at the age of 85, still Crossland’s biggest cheerleader.

Dr. Hale, NEO President was our guest speaker of the night. He gave a impactful speech on perseverance.

Eric Lopp, Sr. Project Manager for Crossland Construction’s Tulsa Division, accepted the prestigious Red Iron Award, one of two awards given at the ceremony.

2017 PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Crossland is proud to have a nationwide presence, but that’s not the reason for our success. When we build the workforces of our various divisions, we are deliberately and thoughtfully assembling a certain kind of Crossland team. We look for people who are invested in their communities to stand with us in the trenches. We understand that when construction workers love their neighbors, they bring with them a certain inspiration and dedication to the jobsite that can’t be artificially generated. Our Crossland crews see the smaller picture of a vast landscape – the kids who walk the halls of the schools we build, the business owners and their customers who have access to new products and services, and the residents that benefit from our community and infrastructure projects. With all of that in mind, every completed 2017 Crossland project became a way for us to better love our neighbors and help change the face of our communities.

Park City, KS— CSTK Custom Trailers, a diversified distributor of transportation, construction, communications equipment, and related services, awarded Crossland Construction Company the $3 million contract for their new Sales and Service facility in Park City, Kansas. This 22,000 square foot facility includes 5,000 square feet of office space, with 17,000 square feet used for a truck shop, a crane rail, and a separate parts storage warehouse. The five-ton crane rail is used for moving engines; a carbon dioxide exhaust system was also installed. The metal building has polished concrete floors, with stainless steel countertops in the showroom space. With one of the wettest springs on record, Crossland crews had to dry out the job site and provide temporary roadways to keep the project moving forward. True to form, we completed the project on time and on budget.

WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY

AIRBUS

Wichita, KS— Crossland Construction Company was awarded the contract for the Airbus Partnership Building #1. Airbus, the tenant, played a large part in the design and layout. The building was designed and constructed using the DesignBuild delivery system. The design team included GLMV Architecture, Integrated Consultants Engineers, and MKEC. An aluminum curtainwall storefront system provides an open feel and an abundance of natural light. Architectural wall panels and brick masonry cover the exterior. The facility’s basement has a concrete lid that acts as a safe room for both employees and students in the event of inclement weather. The LED lighting, an open-air atrium, and architectural ceilings yield an impressive aesthetic. A glass handrail adds to a sense of spaciousness as visitors climb the stairs to the second floor.

Precast concrete wall panels were placed for elevator shafts. The large skylight also adds to the natural lighting. This facility directly impacts WSU students, providing real world applied learning opportunities. We were honored to play a part in turning the dreams and visions of WSU’s new Innovation Campus into reality. NEW HOPE AND VILLAGE ON THE CREEKS

TRAILS AND BRIDGES

Rogers, AR— The New Hope Trails and Bridges project in Rogers, Arkansas was designed to provide more options and increased safety for runners and bikers in the Northwest Arkansas region. The project includes three prefabricated, metal pedestrian bridges and an elevated, prefabricated shade structure, the latter which rests on poured-in-place concrete. Crossland Heavy crews constructed 7,740 square feet of trail for New Hope’s sister project, the Village on the Creek trails path, and 31,500 square feet of trail, also for the Village on the Creek trailways. Additional project elements include a segmental block retaining wall measuring 7,500 square feet, a 2,500 square foot, poured-in-place retaining wall, and 2,500 square feet of HackettStone drystacking retaining wall, all for Village on the Creek. Attractive project landscaping can be seen from the highway in the Rogers Pinnacle Hills area. This Trails and Bridges project is just another collaboration between Crossland and our clients in Northwest Arkansas. As we look to build the future, Crossland Heavy is focused on further solidifying relationships with our Owners and our communities.
