Vi sfido a nominare tre artisti finlandesi viventi!

The Major Valter Orsi Municipality of Schio

I have the pleasure of welcoming you to the International Biennial Di Carta / Papermade in Schio, now in its fourth edition. Supporting the exhibition, making it a tradition, is a source of great satisfaction for our city, as our region prides itself in its determination and long-term planning, both in industry and in culture. In times where transience reins and trends yo-yo in and out of fashion, we would like to present the public with a project which is becoming increasingly structured and rich in stimuli. In fact, whilst the essence of the Biennial remains, the addition of new events and activities enriches the exhibition, forming stronger connections to the city life, on the one hand, and the world of international art on the other, with the aim of sparking interest and engagement in the individuals and artists who come to visit. The exhibition is based around The unnecessary things which make the world beautiful. Against this backdrop, visitors are invited to go above and beyond a purely utilitarian approach and consider how beauty may actually be necessary and even change the world. Paper is a poor material, often put to fleeting and rather unimaginative use in our daily lives. At the Biennial, however, artists transform it into a ‘thing of beauty’, manipulating and remodelling it in their own unique ways: we can admire these transformations, products of individual life paths, native cultures, technical experimentation and tradition. I would like to give a special mention to Raul Meel, author of the quote that ispirated the biennal theme and Ulla Rantanen, the guest of honour for this edition, as well as to all the artists from Finland who have their own special section this year. We are pleased to provide an insight into this country’s art, a country which we know to be attentive to culture, and we are curious to discover their artistic excellence. And so we invite you into Palazzo Fogazzaro to explore the exhibition together.

Unnecessary things make the world beautiful

The title of the fourth edition of the Di Carta/Papermade biennial exhibition is an invite to reflect on the role that beauty plays in human life. It is also a homage to Raul Meel to mark the inauguration of the Meel archive in Palazzo Fogazzaro in Schio. Our inspiration came from his artist’s autobiography entitled Observing the Wandering Clouds (2011-2013): “It is the unnecessary things which make the world beautiful”. Meel made these notes in the margin as he listened to birdsong. A “proliferation of surprising melodies, beauty and exaggeration!”. He was so taken with the sound that he sought to turn the birdsong sinto human voice, teaming his amazement with precision, consulting ornithologists and handbooks, drawing on his own experience, filling the voids with poetic talent, playing around with the production of sounds like Khlebnikov, the young poet, and singing in the place of what Leopardi described as “the most joyful creatures in the world”. How much time wasted! Is it not the case that a flâneur is able to grasp the details and evanescences unknown to those who aim straight for (what is presumed to be) the target? They say beauty is the artist’s faith (and for the faithful, what counts is not what others consider necessary: “Look at the birds in the sky, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them”). But is art - from which those who cultivate it often fail to make a living – still related to beauty? Does it show us where to find it? Does it allow us to experience it? What is the relationship between beauty and necessity? In a world governed by the iron laws of finance, in a world that worships profit and productivity and is subservient to material requirements, we seek to focus our attention on gratuitousness, lightness, time wasted rather than spent, on the playful uselessness of beauty, by inviting the guest artists to interpret the disorderly law of uselessness in their works and creative reflections, using signs and paper as a hymn to the futile necessity of beauty for the citizens of the 21st century.

12

By looking at how these artists have replied and interpreted this point of inspiration, filtering it through poetics and perspectives, we are able to discover the variety of their choices as much as the cross-disciplinary nature of the connections within the global village of artists wherein, beyond geohistorical, cultural and social specificities which are admittedly possible to recognise, the seeds of influences, languages, theories, concerns and shared challenges are scattered and can easily start to bud in any nation. It will simply be a matter of recognising and suggesting, in short, the main functional and conceptual pathways taken by the artists, starting from a theme which can be interpreted in many different ways. But not before having first remembered that Finland is the guest country of honour for this edition (thanks to the co-curator Seppo Salmi), and that, in line with tradition, the biennial is mainly playing host to graphic works of art, welcoming, as is customary, all different kinds of techniques (digital printing and mixed, experimental methods stand side by side with techniques which have long played their part in distinguished tradition - woodcut and chalcography, some which will immediately strike the observer, resulting in an extraordinary and executive tour de force). The trait d’union is not technique, but the medium of paper, and for this reason, in line with the title of the biennial, installations, origami, artists’ books, sculptures, paintings on or (mainly) of paper form connections and interact with the prints in the rooms of the Palazzo Fogazzaro. As they saunter through these rooms, the visiting flâneurs will, little by little, be able to recognise a series of choices and stances, just like in classic aristos bios (the best life), personal and varied perceptions of the relationship between beauty and uselessness. There are those who have shed light on one aspect of beauty, whilst others have shed light on a different aspect, and others on a different aspect again. In this way, the whole is made up of a list of options, a multitude of directions. Every single artist has trodden the path they deemed the best to express their ideas of beauty and futility. Many of their choices relate and are, ideally, included in the same group. And so a potential list of pathways emerges, pathways which may also be intertwined. Artists who have created their very own ‘beautiful work of art’ from ‘useless’ materials (otherwise known as recycled); Artists who have made works of art which are rebellious in every interpretation, which would seem to say nothing, but which show their true nature exclusively through their euphoric, or ambiguous, gratuitous beauty; Artists who have placed emphasis on patience and consideration (in an almost ritualistic manner), marking the creative transfer and leaving fleeting traces; artists who search for beauty in the small things (either by literally creating tiny works of art, or by enlarging the proportions of small working tools such as a die or screw), in lightness (the reason for flying), in proportions, recalling, with Baudrillard, that behind every reallife object, there is also an object that has been dreamt up; artists who unmask degrading, hidden trickery and who question this trickery (with the

13

humanoid who confuses the perception of humanity and nature); Artists who find the source of beauty in nature (starting with the Finnish artist Ulla Rantanen, recipient of the achievement award), but mainly revisiting it, deconstructing it and putting it back together, and, as such, transforming it artificially and culturally, capturing the leading lines, the scars and the anthropogenic interference, with a view poised between detailed and wideranging; artists who extract an intimate femininity from beauty (creative, welcoming, combative...), finding the other face of freedom; artists who contemplate beauty in the harmony of living spaces (interior or exterior) and does so in the perpetual transformation of forms; artists who explore beauty in exuberance (decorative, erotic, ritualistic...) or in the bare essentials (in forms of expression as in content); artists who experiment with beauty in the context of the (apparent) futility of games (and in the context of mockery, including of art itself), or in the context of gratuitousness; artists who hesitate to acknowledge beauty in ruin (almost post-historical or dystopic impulses) or in fragments; artists who suggest that the ugly (or that which is regarded as ugly) may solicit an unconventional idea of beauty which is more overarching, if only we were willing to detach ourselves from those deep-rooted outlooks and judgements; artists who remind us that beauty doesn’t exist without shadow, like a composition of colourful balloons which friends of the deceased release into the sky. And just look at how much darkness there is within beauty: the faint darkness of calligraphy, the darkness of dirt and pollutants, darkness which repels and attracts the entanglement of space and time explored by the subconscious, the dark and gleaming bile of melancholy (temperament of the creative, the Dürerian concept)...all the way to the darkness upon darkness which triggers night to descend on our inner eye. But, evidently, it is simply a matter of a playing around. Visitors may sketch out their own list and, above all, just like in the best life, get involved with artistic pieces and take a stance. Stimulated, challenged, struck or charmed by the many different forms, it’s our turn to position ourselves, alongside one in particular, or facing it, or in a personal space; our mind is now ready to acknowledge that which it didn’t see before.

14

Two years ago, in a Vicenzan café, I met a youth named Sergio. He was an Arts and Culture student at the University of Bologna. I might have bragged to him about knowing the university had a 900-year-old history and alumni like Dante, Petrarch, and Tasso. Eventually, I found the courage to ask Sergio what he knew about Finland. “Your country has unspoiled nature, lakes and rivers, and clean air,” he listed. At first, Sergio could not remember any Finnish people or brands, but with a little help he was able to recall Sibelius the composer, Aalto the architect and a now-infamous mobile phone company (yes, Nokia). My new friend did not know much about Finnish art, though. The earliest surviving art in Finland is medieval church art mainly influenced by the Roman church, although some of its elements point clearly to a basis in Byzantine traditions. The oldest Finnish portraits date to the midseventeenth century. In the beginning of the 19th century, as Europe saw the rise of nationalism and the building of clear-cut national identities – a process in which landscapes were often harnessed to present a nation’s typical mindscapes – Finnish painters, writers and composers alike searched for national landscapes in remote, pristine places like Karelia and Lapland. Finland has provided art education since 1707. Long before and after this, however, Finnish artists have travelled across the world to observe and learn. In the 19th century, the places to be were Stockholm, Düsseldorf and, later on, France. Since the fin de siècle, the School of Paris has had a significant influence on Finnish visual art. To Italians, Finland is perhaps like a distant island inhabited by people who speak a strange tongue. Traditionally, Finland’s image has been shaped by forests, the Kalevala, long-distance running, and our neighborhood with the Soviet Union. Recently, our reputation has been influenced by the EU, the information society, Finland’s education and healthcare system, and our top happiness scores. Despite this, our culture is largely unknown even to students of art like Sergio. In the realm of music, Finland has produced a few conductors, opera singers and heavy metal bands that have performed at leading Italian stages. Our literature is nowadays widely translated into many languages, but rarely into Italian. Film freaks may have seen works by Aki Kaurismäki, but otherwise Finland shows small on the world map of cinema. And how about classical visual art? Name three living Finnish artists! I hope that the 4th edition of Di Carta / Papermade International Biennale in Schio will expand and diversify the image of Finnish art in Italy. The fifteen artists presented are of various ages and backgrounds and work with different techniques, but all of them are internationally acclaimed. Finnish art is currently being exported across the globe, which affords our artists plenty of connections with foreign colleagues and institutions – Italian ones, as well. For instance, many of the artists showcased here have studied at Italian art schools, brought their students on field trips to local art museums and taught at art camps, and organised exhibitions from Rome to Venice. Rome may well be the cradle of culture, but the children of Ultima Thule are doing well, too.

Ulla Rantanen

On experiencing nature

I was born and grew up in the country. This is why the first recollections of my life are often connected with natural surroundings or situations where nature in one way or another creates its own atmosphere. Like many others, my childhood years contain vivid experience of the changing of the seasons, summers associates with wild strawberry patches and the clouds floating by. I had to spend a lot of time without companions of my own age. This perhaps has had an influence in the way that trees, plants, animals, indeed nature as whole became for me an inexhaustible object of research. I cannot recall whether these experiences included conscious experiences of beauty. Probably not. There was no reason to take a stand on whether something was beautiful or ugly, good or bad - I was myself part of nature, its growing and changing. Nowadays it appears to me that the personal crisis I’ve experienced has created a type of regression in me, a return to the experiential world of earliest years: nature. I feel the joy of rediscovery and look upon nature as an area of intellectual experience with which I have a very private and undistorted emotional relationship. Perhaps somebody would define this kind of phenomena as alienation, an escape from the problems of human relationships and a world I feel is chaotic. When I try and describe with words how my experiences of nature and its significance are the basis of my work, I usually notice that I come across expressions that are often repeated and appear banal. Experiences of nature are both individual and general. For me experiencing nature is always and primarily a continuous and powerful experience of beauty. This says it all, there is no need for further explanations. To be able to get grips with the means of expressing motif I have to restrict it to a realizable state so that my mind can comprehend it. This restriction is often the totality or the details of nature in which one can see traces of some violent event, either caused by its own process or man’s destructive interference. Such a motif can be, for example, a gravel pit suddenly appearing in the middle of a forest or an unexpected walls sand pit on whose hang roots of big tree. I also notice rocks split by roads and artificial clearings in the forest created by felling or laying of power lines. The aesthetic experience I have when I observe an idyllic, peaceful landscape or a flower with fine colors, is probably not sufficient when searching for form for what I want to convey in my works. This is difficult to explain. I think I look for such stratification and dimensions which I feel are found in life itself. Perhaps it means looking for truth. I look for motifs which besides expressing something concrete would also say something general. As nothing is usually unambiguous, I have to resort to symbolic language in my visual expression, the visible form of which is for everyone to recognize. This language has to be familiar to me and I find it in nature. There I can find what is close to me - unreservedly, truly. My experience of the Finnish landscape is that it is intimate, it hides its feelings, yet underneath the surface there is strong movement life, a world of dramatic happenings. There I can find an exact equivalent to my and every human’s nature: hope, solitude, beauty, death. Thus, when I use my observations of nature as the basis of my artistic work I cannot primarily aim at conveying an objective perception, instead I bring forth those subjective feelings which I probably am not even conscious of. Visual art itself is one of the forms of communication between people which we need in order to better understand ourselves and others. Sometimes when I feel that learning to live means most of all learning the skill of abandoning, I think that at least I don’t have to part with nature and the skill of observing it. However, I know that already during my life time the flora and fauna of the world have significantly diminished due to man’s thoughtless exploitation. Ulla Rantanen
