Otsego Welcomes New Hope Health to Downtown Otsego
Owner LeAnn Fritz cuts the ribbon in a held by Otsego city officials. On November 29, 2011 Otsego city officials celebrated the opening of New Hope Health with a ribbon cutting ceremony. New Hope Health is located in downtown Otsego in the former Country Way Foods store, 100 W. Allegan Street. The natural health business is owned by Board Certified Naturopathic Doctor, LeAnn Fritz. LeAnn grew up in Plainwell. She received her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from WMU and used that degree to do personal training for nearly 7 years. She then went on to get her naturopath degree.

During that training, she interned with naturopathic doctor Tom Mather for two years where she learned hands-on how to work with various people and health challenges. LeAnn is currently studying with Gabriel Cousens, MD, working toward a master’s degree in raw and vegan nutrition. For the past two years, LeAnn has had an office in Kalamazoo where ceremony she would see clients, teach classes and create and facilitate corporate wellness programs. She continues to offer these same services in her new office in the back of the store. LeAnn is often asked what naturopathy is. It can be explained by these six principles: 1) First, do no harm (no therapy should help one area of the body while harming another). 2) The body was created to be self-healing if given what it needs. 3) Identify and remove the root cause (rather than “manage” or suppress symptoms). 4) Treat the whole person, not the illness (there is more to YOU than your symptoms). 5) The Naturopathic doctor is primarily a teacher

NODDING TO GOD “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” – ISAIAH 9:2 Christmas in my home town is a memory to cherish. Some of my memories include listening to Christmas carols being played on outdoor loud speakers downtown, participating in the children’s Christmas program at church (after the program we were given a box of different kinds of lifesavers along with some walnuts, among other goodies), going caroling, listening to Luke’s account of the Christmas story, attending the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service which always ended with “passing the light” while singing “Silent Night.” Imagine Christmas without music, light or gifts. Can we still have Christmas without these things? Probably; but one thing we cannot have Christmas without is the Christ-child. I am not concerned so much about “keeping Christ in Christmas” as I am with thinking of Him in a casual way. It is possible to go through the motions without really thinking about the meaning. Let me illustrate. Some years ago, in a small town in Central Europe, a visitor was fascinated by something that seemed very strange to him. He noticed all the native villagers passed by an ordinary looking wall; they would nod casually in the direction of the wall, and then make the sign of the cross as they walked by. When the visitor asked why they did this, no one knew. The visitor’s curiosity got the best of him and he decided to do some research. He began chipping away at the layers of whitewash and dirt that had accumulated on the wall over time. Underneath the grime, he discovered a magnificent mural of Mary and the baby Jesus! For generations of townspeople, it had been an altar of prayer in the heart of the village. It was a beautiful ritual, but over time people went through the motions without realizing why they were doing it. It is so easy for us to do the right thing for the wrong reason. Even we preachers have the challenge of telling the old story each year in new and creative ways. Nodding to God won’t cut it. This year my prayer will be to embrace His light; to celebrate the miracle; to experience the joy; and to share His love with others, especially those whose needs are greater than my own. Amen. Lulu L. LEWIS AGE 95 - OTSEGO
Lulu passed away Monday, December 5, 2011, in Plainwell. Mrs. Lewis was born August 21, 1916 in Allegan to Otto and Fern (Russon) Nimtz and was a lifelong resident of the area. Lulu was a devoted homemaker and loved her family more than anything. In her younger years she and her husband were members of several square dance clubs. She also enjoyed knitting, crafting, traveling, was a prolific crocheter and loved playing the organ. On September 30, 1937 in Elkhart, Indiana, she married Harlan Lewis, and they had celebrated 47 years together. He died in 1985. Also preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Mildred Boysen. Surviving are three children, Don (Sandy) Lewis of Kalamazoo, Sally (Steve) DeWitt of Tumbling Shoals, AR and Tom (Pam) Lewis of Otsego; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 3 greatgreat-grandchildren; her brother and a sister, Art Nimtz and Clara (Jack) Howrigon, both of Otsego; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Roger W. SAUSAMAN Sr. AGE 70 - OTSEGO
Roger passed away Saturday, December 3, 2011 in Kalamazoo. Mr. Sausaman was born April 2, 1941 in Kalamazoo to Ersel and Thelma (Williams) Sausaman. Roger worked at KVP, KVP Sutherland, Brown, James River and Crown Vantage where he retired after 32 years. He enjoyed stock car racing. On December 17, 1960 in Kalamazoo he married Mary Condon who survives. Also surviving is his daughter, Christine (Steve) Hallmark of Otsego; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister and a brother and many nieces and nephews. Roger was preceded in death by a son Roger Sausaman, Jr. in 2002 and 5 brothers and sisters. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. A Graveside Service will be held at 1 P.M. Friday at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Memorial donations may be made to Wings Home, 330 Linn St., Allegan. Eloise J. “Lois” MORRIS AGE 89 - ALLEGAN (formerly of Otsego)
Eloise passed away Friday, December 2, 2011, in Allegan. Mrs. Morris was born October 13, 1922, the daughter of DeForrest and Myrtle (Smith) Henry. For over 20 years she was employed with Kal-Equip. In her leisure time she enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading, crocheting, ceramics, flower gardening and boating. Lois was a great cook whose favorite food was chocolate. She enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk Show and The Waltons, cigarettes and coffee. Lois loved playing with her grandchildren. Surviving are two sons, Ronald (Cheryl) Julien of South Carolina and Bud Smith (and his fiancé Debra Quick) of Otsego; 10 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her three husbands, Butch Julien, Charles “Bud” Smith and Gilbert Morris; two daughters, Carmen “Tommie” Watson and Beth Nickerson; and a granddaughter, Tammy Jane Watson. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego with funeral celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Jerry F. ZUGEL AGE 68 - VICKSBURG
Jerry passed away suddenly Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at his residence. Jerry was born May 16, 1943 in Gary, IN to Frank and Georgia (Gilleo) Zugel. Following high school he served his country in the U.S. Army. For about 10 years he worked as a butcher at Kroger in Indiana and then moved to the Kalamazoo area in the mid-1960s and continued his employment with Kroger. He then worked as a meat cutter for Eckridge for over 15 years and most recently was employed with Bowers Manufacturing Co. in Kalamazoo for around 10 years. In his leisure time he enjoyed cutting wood, playing with his grandkids on the dirt bike and gator, fishing, feeding fish and watching his grandkids fish and puttering in his barn. Surviving are a son and a daughter, Jerry Zugel, Jr. of Gobles and Cheryl (Bob) Heckman of Shelbyville; two grandchildren, April and Zach; his fiancée, Linda Granada of Vicksburg; step-children, William (Linda) Roe of OK, Mark (Mary) Roe of Pinconning, Steve (Cindy) Roe of Galesburg and Pam (Terry) Roe-Vanderberg of Dimondale; close step-grandchildren, Kelli, Allison and Kevin; siblings, Marge (Ralph) Ehresman of MN and Denny (Dot) Zugel of Allegan; his first wife, Nancy Reddick, to whom he was married for 18 years; many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and in 2007 by his second wife, Janice (Roe) Zugel, whom he married February 14, 1986. Friends may visit with Jerry’s family from 3 to 5pm Sunday at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego where funeral services will be held at 11:00am Monday, Pastor Jeff Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. Contributions in memory of Jerry may be made to the C.S. Mott Childrens Hospital in Ann Arbor or the Alzheimer’s Association. Barbara went to be with her Lord unexpectedly Sunday, December 4, 2011. Mrs. Foster was born April 1, 1928 in Plainwell to Claude and Ethel (Clements) Chesnut and was a lifelong resident of the area. Over the years, Barbara had worked as a caregiver for many people in their homes. She was very active in the Oakwood Bible Church. Surviving are six children, Carol (Frank) Clark of Portage; Gail (Ron) Tutewiler of FL, Judy (Doug) Scheppelman of Cassopolis, Gary Foster (Chipper) of Allegan, Shirley Foster of Otsego and Michael (Claudine) Foster of CA; 19 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; siblings, Paul Chesnut, Lugene Chesnut and Virginia Burns; a sister-in-law, Betty King; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Foster in 2000; and siblings, Claude Chesnut and Mary Lou Howard.
