I have respectfully but honestly shared with family members and friends about the life changing love of Jesus Christ, that he can fill the void in our hearts that no one or nothing else can fill. Over the years, several of them reply with something like “Christians are a bunch of hypocrites.” Of course, this is a gross generalization. But what is generally true is that all humans are hypocrites. Come on, is there any human on earth, Christian or not, who perfectly lives up to his or her standards, assuming the human has any standards? Every human being has a gap of distance between the values we profess and the values we actually practice, between our talk and our walk. There is only one human whose talk and walk were in perfect alignment; his name is Jesus. In Matthew 23, Jesus teaches on hypocrisy. He teaches that a hypocrite is someone who doesn’t practice what they profess, who is more concerned with their outward appearance to people than their inward character before God, and who expects more from others than they give themselves. Again, it seems like every person, whether atheist, agnostic, or theist, struggles with the human tendency to be hypocritical. The big question is, are we self-aware enough to see and humbly admit our hypocrisy to God. Humility is the antidote to hypocrisy. When we humbly acknowledge the gap of distance between our profession and practice, our beliefs and behaviors, our talk and walk, the amazing grace of God is unleashed. That encounter with God’s grace, mercy and love will, in time, transform us in ways that begin to close the gap of distance between our talk and our walk.

Remember also that Christians are not microwavable but crockpotable. It takes the Spirit of God time to transform us into a person who is more faithful than hypocritical. Imagine you were following me on highway 131. And suppose you saw someone cut me off rudely. Then, you watch me catch up to that car and look at them with a “what were you thinking” expression. You might think of me as a hypocrite since I preach love and forgiveness. What you don’t know is that before I jumped into the crockpot of God’s amazing grace several decades ago and became a Christian, I would have actually raced up to that car, yelled out expletives, and ask them to pull over for a fist fight. So, what you see as hypocrisy is actually spiritual growth. The point is, don’t judge a person to be a hypocrite. Even though he is still rough around the edges, you don’t know what he used to be like before jumping into the crockpot of God’s grace.

In the history of the Christian faith, there have been at least 4 events that changed the world forever. (1) The birth of Christ changed the way we see God. (2) The Death of Christ changed the way we understand salvation. (3) The Resurrection of Christ changed the way we view physical death and eternal life. Let’s take a look at how the Day of Pentecost changed the world (4).

Pentecost (“Fiftieth day”) was an agricultural feast. The Jewish Feast of Weeks, fell on the 50th day after the Feast of Passover (Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16:9-11). It was the events described in Acts 2 that transformed it into a Christian celebration, which is also known as the Birthday of the Church.

Here is how the Day of Pentecost changed the world forever.

A NEW PRESENCE

As one would expect, the disciples worried about who would take Jesus’ place once He left this earth. Jesus said the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit who is in Jesus, would fill that void. Jesus said, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever…I will not leave you as orphans” (John 14:16, 18).

A NEW PROMISE

Just before He ascended from this earth, Jesus said, “I am going to send what my Father has promised…” (Luke 24:49). God’s promise was dramatically fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came suddenly “like the rush of a violent wind.” “Tongues as of fire” rested on each believer’s head. “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” (Acts 2:1-4). For the first time the nations of earth heard the gospel in their own native language.

A NEW POWER

Before His death, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit who was with them would be in them (John 14:17). The mighty Spirit of God would empower them to be “witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

A NEW PURPOSE

Before Pentecost, it was all about them. After Pentecost, it was all about the disciples (now Apostles) spreading the good news of Jesus Christ to the entire world. They had a new purpose. Pentecost was the inauguration of a new age… the age of the Spirit, in which we now live. Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost, calling for repentance, belief and baptism was pointed, powerful and effective as nearly 3,000 people were saved in one day! (Acts 2:41). And that was only the beginning! The fact that Christianity is still in existence today is the greatest testament to the faithfulness of God. Today, Christianity is the world’s largest religion followed by about 2.4 billion people.

Listen again to Peter’s reference to the prophet Joel, “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people…” (Acts 2:17). God is alive and well! His Spirit continues to move in our world today. The only question is whether or not the Holy Spirit is working in our lives.

Prayer: Lord, do it again! Fill us with Your Spirit. In Your strong name. Amen.

Marie R. TUCKER AGE 86 - PORTAGE, MI

Marie passed away, Sunday, May 5, 2024, at her home in Portage. She was born April 4, 1938, in Norwich, Connecticut, the daughter of Donald and Agnes (Pepin) Roode. Marie received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Connecticut as well as also having the accreditation of Registered Nurse. On November 21, 1959, in Griswold, Connecticut, she married Stephen Wayne Tucker. They then moved to Virginia where Tammy was born and then to Wyoming where Steve was born. They then moved to Massachusetts, where she worked full-time as a nurse and instructor in Beverly, MA at the Beverly Hospital School of Nursing while her husband completed his seminary schooling. After completion they moved to Saugatuck where Christina was born and then to Colorado where she worked in home health. Finally making their home in Michigan (Otsego and Kalamazoo), Marie founded and was the original director of Wings of Hope Hospice. She had a giving heart and belonged to many organizations over the years including The Ladies Library Association in Kalamazoo, The Red Hat Society and was a past president of the Otsego Lions Club. In her spare time Marie loved crafting and donated handmade treasures to Operation Christmas Child and to places all over the United States as well as Nepal, Africa and the Philippines. She enjoyed participating in area craft shows and spending the winters in Kauai and Kona, Hawaii with her husband. Marie was a woman of strong faith and had a deep abiding love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She is survived by her husband Stephen. Also surviving are her children, Tammy (Brian “Terry”) Walker of Saline, Steve (Christy) Tucker of Indiana and Christina (Andrew) Dalby of Colorado; grandchildren, James, Donna, Kevin, Nate, Jon, Alyssa and Maggie; great-grandchildren, Deacon, Tommy and Audrey; siblings, Shirley, Joe and Nancy along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Jeannette. Friends may visit with Marie’s family starting at noon, Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the First Congregational Church of Otsego, until the time of the memorial service at 1:00 P.M., with Pastor Lenny Luchetti officiating. Jack Lee WITT AGE 94 - MARTIN, MI

Jack took his stock car, #33, to the oval dirt track in Heaven. He passed away in his home May 9, 2024. Jack was born September 29, 1929 to Mabel Friemark and Dee Witt. He married Wanda Lee Cooper and together they had three children. He worked as an auto mechanic and became the owner of Martin Garage. Jack enjoyed racing the stock car he built and raced many of the local speedway tracks. He also enjoyed mushroom hunting (morels, "of course"), bargain hunting, salmon fishing on Lake Michigan, tinkering in his garage, and cold beer. Jack and Wanda adopted three siblings from the Republic of El Salvador and made a home for them here. After his divorce, he spent many years with Claudia Earl and remained close friends. Later in life he rekindled a high school romance with Dorla "Jean" Larson Woodward. They shared many years and adventures together. He cared deeply for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had a very close and loving friendship with Dick and Glenda Guerrant. Jack is survived by his children: Leigh Ann Ciesielski of Plainwell; Carol (Bradford) Pyne of Plainwell; Damon (Lynn) Witt of Turlock, CA; Alex (Liz) Witt of Hastings; Maricela (Cliff) Jenkins of Dallas, GA; and Kitty Lindy. His surviving grandchildren include Dylan Witt of Oak Park, NY; Aimee (Brad) Herrington of Otsego; Alycia (Mark) Lee of Kalamazoo; Kendra (Justin) Gregg of Kalamazoo, Owen Witt of Kalamazoo; Addie Witt of Hastings; Xena Enos of Kalamazoo; Trinity Enos of Dallas, GA; as well as many beloved great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his mother and father, his brother Wendall Witt and son, Jack Witt, Jr., all of Otsego.

Cremation has taken place and at his request, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Otsego VFW TBA.

Lenny tragically passed away, Friday, May 10, 2024, at his home in Otsego. He was born March 31, 1973, in Allegan, the son of Barbara Connor. Lenny loved sports, especially football and basketball, WWE and fishing. Surviving are his children, Jessica Connor of Kalamazoo, Sara Connor, Michael Connor and Shawn Connor, all of Otsego; grandchildren, Athena and Castiel Palmer and Tambra Sutherland; his mother, Barbara Cowen; brothers, Cody and Dustin Cowen along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Patsy A. NYBERG AGE 86 - PLAINWELL, MI

Patsy Ann Nyberg, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend passed away peacefully on May 13, 2024. Patsy was born in Kalamazoo, MI to James & Lula (Kniss) Armstrong on June 10, 1937. She grew up the only girl with three brothers but that only made her strong and ready to face the world. She grew up in Plainwell, graduating from Plainwell High School in 1955. While in high school, she met the love of her life, Larry Nyberg. They were married on November 10, 1956, and spent 55 wonderful years together. Their family grew to include three children and they made their home in Plainwell. Patsy treasured her friends and had many wonderful memories with them. She loved to cook and what she cooked was amazing. Everyone was always welcome at her table. She always made enough food for an army and always had an empty chair for a guest. Patsy was also a very talented seamstress; making curtains and anything the family needed. Painting was another talent of hers and she enjoyed painting nature and painting rocks. She loved to be outdoors, spending time in her flower garden. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Larry; as well as her two older brothers, Jim and Jerry. Patsy is survived by her children: Scott (Cindy) Nyberg, Monica (Ray) Mikowski, Kerry (Carl) Wilkes; six grandchildren: Jennifer, Christopher (Vicki), Cassie (Kenny), Katie, Allie and Jill (Johnny); and three great-grandchildren: Dominic, Taylor and Hudson. She is also survived by her brother, Jack, as well as several special nieces and nephews and many close friends. Patsy will be greatly missed by those who knew her, those she paved the way for, and those who were touched by her kindness and generosity. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to the Gun River Conservation Club or Christian Neighbors of Plainwell. George P.

George Peter Marks III passed away on May 9, 2024 due to complications from lung cancer. George was born on June 24, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan to George P. "Skip" Marks, Jr. and Rosalie Jones. He attended Otsego Public Schools and graduated from Otsego High School in 1972. George was a gifted guitar player, having been inspired by seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. George was a member of several area bands and played at many clubs, bars, and other events. He was a fan of the blues and styled himself after Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Winter. George was not only a musician, he was a lifelong student and teacher of music, as well as a collector of music. He gave numerous people guitar lessons over the years. After high school, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a quartermaster onboard the USS Nimitz. His job was to drive the ship. He received an honorable discharge and started a career as a machinist, CNC programmer for prototype parts for the auto industry. He loved to listen to music, play his guitar around a campfire while having a few beers, and then a few more beers, and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Anthony) Ricciardi of Washington, D.C.; his son, Ben (Karen) Marks of Wheeling, WV; his brother, Ronnie (Beth) Marks of Otsego; his sister, Cindy McDonald of Plainwell; his friend and former wife, Martha (Roger) Bantug; his grandkids, Creed Eller, Mira Eller, Dorian Eller, Scarlett Eller, Lucy Marks, Dulcinea Marks, Genevieve Marks, Caroline Bantug, and Cosette Bantug; his loving Aunt Marian Jones of Otsego; Uncle Preston and Aunt Barb Marks, of Soddy Daisy, TN; step siblings, Angel (Pat) Clark, Paul Walker, and Mike (Tammy) Walker; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and his lifelong friends, Rick (Kelli) DePauw, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Kristy Sweet of Ludington, and The Chamberlin Brothers (Doug, Greg, and Steve). George was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Roger Lee Marks; his step sister, Tammy Walker; nephews, Corey, Jesse James, and Mark; and his good buddy, Chuck Sweet. There will be a Celebration of George's life at the VFW Post 3030 in Otsego on August 17, 2024. ...is a happy, exuberant girl who loves life.

Elodie was brought to the Allegan Shelter as a lost dog on 4/8/24. Since no one came to reclaim this sweet girl, she’s been spayed, microchipped, and brought up to date on vaccinations.

At the shelter, she loves making friends with all of the volunteers and playing with toys! At the Adoption Expo this past weekend, she showed everyone what a good girl she is even with a lot of people,
