Eleanor passed away, Saturday, February 24, 2024, at her home in Allegan She was born April 8, 1922, in Allegan, the daughter of McKinley and Madeline (Anderson) Oisten She was a Girl Scout for two years while in grade school She loved school and liked her teachers, she received recognition for superior penmanship Eleanor graduated from Allegan High School in 1940 After graduation she worked for Allegan Bell Telephone as an operator She enjoyed connecting calls from service men to their loved ones She then worked at Knappen Milling while living in Hickory Corners During the war while her husband served with the Marines in the Pacific, she worked filling boxes for Post Cereal in Battle Creek After his discharge from the Marines Eleanor was a full time homemaker, wife and mother She loved taking care of her family and her home For almost 30 years she resided in rural Hamilton with her family until their move to Allegan in 1997 Eleanor loved the U P and never grew tired of crossing the Mackinac Bridge She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan during the Sparky Anderson era She enjoyed scrapbooking, flower gardening and watching birds at the bird feeder On September 18, 1942, she married Howard “Russ” Russell Sr who preceded her in death in 2006 Surviving are her daughter, Linda Umlor; son-in-law, Nick Umlor both of Conklin; son, Howard Russell Jr ; daughter-in-law Trina Russell both of Lake City; daughter, Kathleen Kidder; sonin-law, Douglas Kidder both of Battle Creek; daughter, Christine Russell of Hamilton and son, Richard “Dick” Russell of Allegan, formerly of Battle Creek; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and extended family members She was preceded in death by her father, McKinley; mother, Madeline; step-mother, Laura who she cherished and loved; siblings, Arvilla and David Kaylor Richard Oisten Barbara and Richard Smith and Pauline and James Seabright A funeral service was held, Friday, March 1, 2024, at the Otsego Church of God with Pastor Steve Burrow officiating Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Allegan Arrangements by Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego Messages of condolence may be posted at www WinkelFuneralHome com

Philip Robinson Sr passed away on April 26 2024 at Briarwood Assisted Living in Allegan Philip was born on December 2 1936 in Martin Kentucky, the son of George and Mabel (Ousley) Robinson He grew up in Spurlock Kentucky and was the oldest of 14 children In the spring of 1953, he met Mollie Risner and on October 14 1953 they were married Mollie preceded him in death December 5, 2014 Together they had seven children, Patty (Clifton) Blauvelt of Martin Phillip Robinson Jr of Delton Norma (Danny) Elkins of Shelbyville, Jeff Robinson of Plainwell, Connie (Gene) Powers of Otsego, Clifford (Darby) Robinson of Plainwell and Tammy (Mike) Butler of Allegan 21 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren Philip was also preceded in death by his parents, mother and father in law, siblings, daughter in law, Barb Robinson, and son in law, Mike Adams Mollie and Philip attended the House of Prayer Church in Orangeville After retiring in his free time, he pursued his passion, restoring classic cars and creating furniture out of wood The center of his world was his wife and family He had the ability to fix anything and his family would bring him items or cars to fix Upon completion he would say, “it’s good enough for who it’s for,” and laugh knowing whatever it was, it was perfect A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at the House of Prayer Church (Pentecostal Church of Christ), Orangeville Burial took place at Oak Hill Cemetery

Bill passed away Friday, January 19, 2024, in Arcadia Florida He was born December 23, 1938, in Kalamazoo Michigan, the son of William Sr and Edith (Savage) Menck Bill graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1957 and for most of his life worked as a truck driver for Graff Trucking In his spare time, he enjoyed working on cars and trucks, model airplanes and collecting diecast cars Bill liked spending his winters in Florida where he loved socializing and riding his 3-wheeled bike He was a member of the Trowbridge Methodist Church, the Kalamazoo District Office of the United Methodist Church and was a SPRC chair On April 12, 1958, at the Stockbridge Methodist Church in Kalamazoo, he married Shirley George who passed away in 2021 Surviving are his children, Kenneth (Carol) Menck of Otsego, Michigan Douglas (Suzy) Menck of Florida and Brenda (Gayla) Menck of Washington; 4 grandchildren, Joseph, Elisa, Daniel and Jacob; siblings, Sharon Cubitt, Janene Fitzpatrick, Karen Schuemann and Jerry Menck along with several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, and siblings James Menck, Tom Menck, Sue Miller and Kathy Fesenden According to his wishes cremation has taken place Friends may visit with Bill’s family from 5-7 PM, Friday, May 10, 2024, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a memorial service will be held at 11:00 A M , Saturday, May 11, 2024, with celebrant Nyla Merrill officiating Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego

everyone wants to know they are loved and valued Yet, there are too many of us who walk around wondering if anyone really gives a rip about us, sees us, or “gets us ” A while back, I was having breakfast with a friend and a had an odd gut feeling It wasn’t the corned beef hash but, I think, god My waitress looked down and out, tired and sad I sensed god nudging me to go and tell her, “god loves you unconditionally and values you immensely; you are the apple of god’s eyes ” I tried to ignore god’s prompting because, well, I didn’t want to creep her out god’s nudge persisted and I finally relented
After leaving a nice tip (I figured if I’m going to tell a waitress that she is loved by god, I ought to love her too by putting my money where my mouth is), I walked over to her She was wiping a table I said, “Mam, I know this is a bit weird and I don’t do this often, but I really am sensing god wants you to know something god loves you unconditionally and values you immensely; you are the apple of His eyes ” then she slapped me Just kidding She actually started to weep She said to me, “I have been going through a nasty divorce and needed to hear those words ”
Wow, god nudged me hard toward a woman in desperate need of knowing that god sees, knows, and loves her the heart of god for the human race is full of love “For god so loved the world that he sent his one and only son into the world that whoever believes in him might not perish but have eternal life For god did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but to save it” (John 3:16-17) Beware! If you open the door of your heart and let god in, he will not only come in and love you, he will love people through you And the world will become a better place because of it loving otsego and Plainwell with you,

In her helpful book, Seeking the King, local author Pam Piersma writes, “The Bible is not merely good literature or nice stories It’s God’s truth God’s Word is the measure with which we must align our lives It is the straight edge that helps us figure out what is true and what is not” (p 46, 47)
With that, I would like to offer some suggestions on how to read and understand the Bible
1 SELECT A VERSION THAT YOU CAN UNDERSTAND
Among others, The New Revised Standard Version is a good choice The Living Bible is an easy read Some of us like to compare various versions
2. BEGIN WITH THE GOSPEL BY MARK It is the earliest and shor test account of the gospel (60 A D ) Mark was a boy in his early teens during our Lord’s ministr y on ear th and about 50 years old when he recorded the events of our Lord’s life
3 SUPPLEMENT YOUR READING WITH BIBLE HELPS
The New Combined Bible Dictionar y and Concordance is a ver y helpful study help The NIV Basic Study Bible, The NIV Student Bible, and William Barclay Commentaries are also excellent resources
4 LOOK FOR MAJOR THEMES
Watch for the word “therefore” which often leads to a summar y statement Example: “Therefore do not worr y about tomorrow ” (Matthew 6:34)
5 LET GOD SPEAK TO YOU “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105)
6. ENJOY READING THE BIBLE “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy ” (Psalm 16:11)
