The 2012 Olympic Games in London has captured the world stage as always. I especially enjoy watching the opening ceremonies and the Parade of Nations. The theme of the Olympics (as in our everyday lives) is always the same - the glory of winning and the agony of defeat. How can a group of stellar athletes, representing the nations of earth, march together in peace (opening ceremonies) while there is so much conflict in our world? In the above verse, Apostle Paul might have felt defeated. This was his second Roman imprisonment for sharing his faith. A mentor for young Timothy and up in years, Paul passes the baton to the next generation with the message to ‘guard the gospel’ (II Timothy l: 4). It is a call to boldness in the face of persecution, diligence in the face of despair and faithfulness in the face of fear. Using the metaphor of the ancient Greek games, he says we must ‘play by the rules’ if we expect to receive the prize. The prizes awarded at the Greek games were evergreen wreaths. Heavenly rewards are different from earthly rewards. Earthly rewards are temporary. Heavenly rewards are eternal. Earthly rewards are for a chosen few. Heavenly rewards are for all who are faithful (Matthew 5:12). Those who are faithful will receive the crown of life (Revelation 2:l0); the crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:7-8); and the crown of glory (I Peter 5:4). Until then, Jesus invites all believers to carry the torch for peace (Matthew 5:9). Prayer: “Finish, then thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be. Let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee; changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love and praise” (Charles Wesley). Peace to you and please worship with us this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived. Congratulations to Tyler (first place), Justin (third place), Jacob and Anna Starr for great runs in the Ready Or Not 5k last week.

Obituaries Robert “Bob” L. BRUCE AGE 68
Robert (Bob) L. Bruce, age 68, passed away peacefully at the Wings Home in Allegan, MI on August 5, 2012 in the presence of family and close friends. Bob was born in Kalamazoo, MI on February 14, 1944 to Ephrain L. Bruce and Leona M. (Merkle) Bruce. He was a longtime resident of Plainwell, MI and had a successful career in the plastics industry and retail in the Kalamazoo area. Bob loved the outdoors and the Boy Scouts of America. He was involved with the Scouts for 35 years and a Scout Master for eight years, where he influenced the lives of many young men and led six to become Eagle Scouts. He loved astronomy and knew the “heavens” well; he was a perpetual amateur weatherman, able to predict local weather patterns far more accurately than many professional meteorologists. In addition, he was a scholar of steam driven trains and Michigan lighthouse history. Bob had a passion for “social networking”, be it person to person or via the internet. He had friends globally with whom he was in regular communication. He is preceded in death by his father Ephrain, two brothers (Richard and Frank), his mother-inlaw Dorothy H. (Smith) Nowak, and father-in-law Frances A. Nowak. His surviving family includes his daughter Kathleen (Bob) Bailey and her children David and Elizabeth, his son Michael (Tammy) Bruce and their children Nathan, Mackenzie, Ally, and Emma, his mother Leona M. Bruce, his brother Tom (June) Bruce and their daughter Malaya, as well as his "resident" adopted son Scott (Kristina) Turner. In addition, Bob had many other children, even though not related, whom he loved dearly as his own, and had a long and loving history with the Bruce family. Bob's children will be celebrating his life for all that knew him on Plainwell Community Center, from 2-5pm Saturday, August 25, 2012 In Bob’s memory, contributions may be made to Wings Home in Allegan, MI; Wings of Hope Hospice, Allegan, MI; or the Boy Scouts of America.

Stephen died Tuesday, August 7, 2012, in Kalamazoo. Steve was born June 26, 1974 in Kalamazoo to Stephen Jr. and Pamela (Crosby) Magierka. For several years he was employed with Charter Communications and most recently with Gertsen Trucking. In his leisure time he enjoyed gardening, four wheeling and riding his motorcycle. Steve loved being with his children. Surviving are his significant other and mother of Alexzander Folk and Ivie Magierka, Stacie Folk; a son, Stephen Magierka IV; his parents, Stephen Jr. and Pamela Magierka of Kalamazoo; sisters, Stephanie A. Magierka of Otsego and Christina M. (Jason) Hale of Martin; grandparents, Stephen Sr. and Marian Magierka of Gobles; uncles Thomas E. (Arlene) Magierka of Otsego and Ronald (Carla) Crosby of Texas; aunt Cynthia (Judy Lundin) Alexander of Largo, FL; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Ruth McLain and Robert Crosby; an uncle, James Joseph Magierka, Sr.; and a cousin, James Joseph Magierka, Jr. Cremation has taken place. Lucille passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2012 in Otsego. Mrs. Larsen was born March 8, 1923 in Salyersville, KY to Floyd and Hortense (Bailey) Pinks. For several years she was employed with McPherson Plastics in Otsego, retiring in 1980. Surviving are two grandsons, Michael (Sherry) Kling of Sturgis and Ryan (Kelly) Kling of Boston; two great-grandsons, Mitch and Kyle Kling; a sister, Minnie Upham of Ohio; a niece and recent caregiver, Pattie Ellis of Plainwell; several other nieces and nephews; her son-in-law, Carl Kling of Otsego; and special friends, Marianne and Jean. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lyle Wagoner and Charles Larsen; her daughter Lynn Kling in 2003; and siblings, Wallace Pinks, Buster Pinks, Juanita Martel, Junior Pinks, Caleb Pinks and Ethel Pinks. Pauline passed away Monday, August 6, 2012 in Plainwell. Mrs. Deike was born August 10, 1914 in Watson Township to Randall and B. Sophia (Nyberg) Brooks and was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a graduate of Martin High School and for several years was employed as a bookkeeper with Otsego Sanitary Milk Co. Pauline was an active member of the Otsego United Methodist Church. She had also belonged to the Widows Club, Otsego Women’s Club and the Crystal Club. For many years she served on the Otsego Election Board and had volunteered for Meals on Wheels. On June 28, 1941 in Allegan she married William F. Deike, who died in 1976. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine Stalter. Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn (Christopher) Russell of Millersville, MD; a granddaughter, Valerie (Kenneth) Herrst of Jasper, AL; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Russell, Victoria Russell and Ashley Madison; a sister-in-law, Ruth Fast of Fennville; 4 nieces; 3 nephews; 9 great nieces and nephews; many great great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 10th, 2012 at the Otsego United Methodist Church, Rev. Dan Minor officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Harm passed away Saturday, August 4, 2012 at home. Mr. LeRoy was born June 20, 1919 in Kalamazoo County to Jacob and Nellie (Deward) LeRoy and was a lifelong resident of the area. During WWII Harm served his country in the U.S. Army. For over 28 years he was employed as a welder with General Motors, retiring in 1981. He loved the outdoors, watching birds and wildlife, and fishing. On September 3, 1953 in Allegan he married Iveda (LaFountain) Sutherland, who died in 2006. Also preceding him in death were two sons, LeRoy Sutherland and David Sutherland; siblings, Betty Crone, Isaac LeRoy, Jake LeRoy and Al LeRoy; infant brothers, Jacob and Peter. Surviving are his children, Louann (Doug) Hatten, Laura (Herbert) Trebilcok, Thomas Sutherland, Carol Harris and Patricia (Gale) Emmons; 42 grandchildren; many greatgrandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego on Wednesday, August 8th with Pastor Randy Hatfield officiating. While enjoying a frozen treat in front of this popular meeting place, at least one customer, the late Carl Brodbeck, asked the late Alice Moon to marry him. The business is also known for its longevity, surviving an arson fire in 2010 and a car crashing into its building a year later.
