Plainwell High School Athletic Hall of Fame Coach Irv Figel has a saying I like. At the beginning of each season he always tells his teams, “There is no I in TEAM. We will all work hard and our rewards will come as a team not as individuals.” I think even basketball great LeBron James would agree it takes a team to win a world championship or an Olympic Gold medal. This is the concept Jesus was trying to get across when He was building his team of disciples. Sometimes they lost their focus. They competed for positions of leadership. They struggled with immaturity. Jesus had to constantly remind them “It takes a TEAM to build the kingdom of God on earth.” An unknown poet expressed it like this: You cannot pray the Lord's Prayer And even once say “I”. You cannot pray the Lord's Prayer And even once say “My.” Nor can you pray the Lord's Prayer And not pray for another... From the beginning to the end of it, It does not once say “me.” A servant Christian is one who is more interested in team success than individual stardom. A servant Christian is driven by the desire to bring glory to God rather than to oneself. A servant Christian is one who serves Christ willingly, lovingly, humbly, unselfishly and sacrificially. AGE 73 - KALAMAZOO

Mike passed away Saturday, September 1, 2012. Mike was born Mason Arthur Miller in Kalamazoo, Michigan on August 24, 1939. He was a man of great wealth as a husband, father and grandfather. He had a great outlook on life, an optimistic spirit, good humor and true friends. He loved nature, was faithful to the people he cared about and seemed to be able to do anything he put his mind to. Yet, most of all, he adored his family. They held first place in his life, and he thrilled to be in theirs. He loved life and lived it fully. When he graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1957, he worked for Brown Paper Company until being hired by General Motors in 1965. He became a die setter for GM until his retirement in 1994. Mike's marriage to Eileen Bartlett enriched his life with four lovely daughters: Sheryl, Cynthia, Marjorie, and Barbara. Though the marriage ended in divorce, Mike would find happiness with a woman he met through mutual friends. June LaValley and Mike fell in love and were married on October 27, 1973 - the beginning of many shared interests and adventures over the next 38 years. Among his many hobbies, Mike enjoyed photography, woodworking, fishing, hunting, teaching others to shoot (especially his grandchildren) and volunteering at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. Mike is survived by his wife June, 3 children: Sheryl Bruner, Marjorie Hatton and Barbara Miller, 2 brothers: Bill (Kathy) Miller and Conrad (Maija) Miller and sister: Patricia Miller. Other members include 5 grandchildren: Chaz, Bryce, Corbin, Amanda and Mitchell. He was preceded in death by a daughter Cynthia Nikolaas. Funeral services were held on Friday, September 7th.
