Navy Airman Nicholas A. Kuykendall, son of Nichole D. Ridner of Delton, Mich. and Scott A. Kuykendall, of Martin, Mich., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Kuykendall completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Kuykendall is a 2008 graduate of Delton High School of Delton, Mich.

WHAT’S YOUR HURRY? We live in the “instant” generation. We live in a fast-paced world. We want everything NOW. We want instant food … instant information … instant gratification … instant growth … and instant success. Dr. Wallace Hamilton, a preacher of an earlier generation, called it the “impatient itch for the instantaneous.” As one grows and (hopefully) matures, one learns that things that matter most take time, patience, hard work, sacrifice and perseverance. It is told that during his playing days, the great basketball player Larry Bird would spend many hours alone running laps and practicing free throws in the Boston Garden. In the spiritual realm, God is never in a hurry. God is love and “love is patient …” (I Cor. 13:4). There are no shortcuts to Christian maturity. While we are always looking for the quick answer or immediate solution, “God’s mills grind slow but sure.” It took the people of Israel 40 years to go a distance of only two hundred miles (a ten day journey by camel caravan) because of their unbelief (Hebrews 4:6). It took them 40 years of training and preparation to get there. The cross of Christ was no short cut. They mocked Him saying, “Come down from the cross” but He refused to play games with them. One can buy a flat screen TV quickly. But things like faith, morality, character and integrity take a lifetime to develop. “Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:30-31 Here’s a prayer for you: “Lord, give me patience! … And give it to me right now! Bill died peacefully Monday, July 30, 2012, in Kalamazoo, surrounded by family. Mr. Brown was born December 26, 1922 to Howard and Louise (Noteboom) Brown and was a lifelong resident of the area. Bill, who was married to Gladys Ball for 64 years, was a farmer, operating his own farm, and also ran Brown’s Farm Equipment with Gladys from the late 50s to early 70s. In his leisure time he enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting trips out west, bowling and dancing, especially to polkas. He also enjoyed his dog, Sparky. His family was very important to him and he most enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a generous man. Preceding him in death were his wife, Gladys in 2010; a son, Don Brown; a granddaughter, Michelle Brown; two grandsons, Scott Brown and Doug Brown; a brother and a sister, Howard Brown and Mildred McGuire. Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Gary (Deidre) Brown of Kalamazoo, Dolores ‘Laurie’ (Robert) Augustine of Otsego, Beverly ‘Bev’ (Ken) Jacobs of Parchment and Carl Brown of South Carolina; 11 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren; a brother, Harry Brown of Hopkins; and a sister, Eleanor Priest, of Hopkins; several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 2nd at St. Margaret Catholic Church, Otsego, with Fr. Gordon Greene celebrant. Burial followed at St. Margaret Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Bill may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements by Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Messages of condolence may be left at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com

William E. ‘Bill’ BURD, Sr. AGE 80 - HART (Formerly of Gull Lake)
Bill died Monday, July 30, 2012 in Hart. Bill was born August 2, 1931 in Doster, MI to Ernest and Lois (Sanders) Burd. An Otsego High School graduate, he had served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion in Ludington. For over 30 years he was employed with DeHaan Heating & Cooling in Kalamazoo. Upon his retirement he moved to Hart. In his leisure time he was an avid fisherman and hunter. Surviving are 5 children, Bill (Gayle) Burd, Jr. of Hart, James Burd of Saline, MI, Celinda Matamoros of Summerfield, FL, Jay (April) Burd of Wayland and Brad (Suzan) Burd of Richland; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a sister and 3 brothers, Velma Todd, Melvin Burd and Jerry (Cheryl) Burd, all of Otsego and Richard (Jeanne) Burd of Martin; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Burd; 2 sisters-in-law, Marie Burd and Eloise Burd; and a brother-in-law, Mark Todd. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 2nd at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Funeral celebrant Bill Rose officiated. Burial with Military Honors followed at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.
