Myner, daughter of Jacquelyn E. Olney of Grand Haven, Mich. and Christopher L. Myner, of Plainwell, Mich., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Il. During the eight-week program, Myner completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Myner is a 2008 graduate of Lakeshore Baptist Academy of Grand Haven, Mich.

PUT ON YOUR RUNNING SHOES! “Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us …” Hebrews 12:1

On Saturday, August 4, up to 200 runners, including yours truly, will participate in the 11th Annual “Ready or Not” 5k Run in Memorial Park, Otsego beginning at 8:00 a.m. I will not be setting any records but plan to finish the course and have fun along the way. I will be joining grandsons Tyler, Justin and Jacob Starr who inspire me greatly. The Bible compares the Christian life to running a race (Hebrews 12: l). The book of Hebrews was written to a group of people who were having a rough time. They were Jewish believers who had suffered great physical and social persecution from Jews and from Romans. They were torn between their new faith in Christ and their old form of religion. Words of faith and hope for them centered in the certainty and superiority of Jesus Christ. The above verse reminds us that “we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses” - loved ones and friends who have gone before us in the faith. The message of encouragement is that others have endured this race, so can we. In the Christian life, Jesus is both the prize as well as our traveling companion. We can climb any mountain, endure any hardship and suffer any loss as long as we remember we do not run alone. So put on your running shoes and meet me at the Park on Saturday and at Sunday worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived. Prayer: Run with me, Lord, and I shall never run alone. Michael G. BARTON AGE 65 - VICKSBURG (Formerly of Otsego)

Michael passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Mike was born March 23, 1947 in Plainwell to Mac and Verna (Hartlage) Barton and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a 1965 graduate of Otsego High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. After over 25 years employment he retired from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department. Surviving are his mother, Verna Barton of Otsego; a sister, Patricia (J.D.) Farmer of Louisville, KY; a brother, Lewis (Ruth) Barton of Otsego; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and a special friend, Ruby Julia Nicole. He was preceded in death by his father and by a niece, Tracy Barton. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 27, 11:00 A.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor Jason Thiel officiating. Military Honors at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego will be conducted by Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mike may be made to V.F.W. Post #3030. Albert A. “Big Al” WASON AGE 73 - OTSEGO

Albert passed away Thursday, July 19, 2012 at his home. He was born July 11, 1939 in Plainwell to Albert J. and Junerose (Livingston) Wason and was a lifelong resident of the area. Al served his country in the US Air Force. For 43 years he was employed with Plainwell Paper Co., retiring as a millwright in 2000, and had served as President of the Plainwell Paper Co. United Paperworkers Union Local No. 1062. He had also served as head of the Otsego Township Planning Commission. In his leisure time Al enjoyed farming, baseball, traveling, U.S. History and reading westerns. On September 10, 1960 in Otsego he married his wife of 51 years, Mary Pittner, who survives. Also surviving are his son and two daughters, Randy (Kim) Wason of Kalamazoo, Lisa (Steve) Peet of Portage and Melissa Chavez of Crivitz, WI; his grandchildren, Trevor and Rachel Wason, Emily, Ashley and Daniel Peet, Tristan and Noah Chavez and Ridge Oisten; brothers, Larry and Robert Wason, sister, Dian Florian; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Harriet Bolhuis; a sister-inlaw, Jane Pittner and nephew, Scott Kraft. Friends may meet with his family from 2 to 6 P.M. Sunday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Monday at St. Margaret Catholic Church, Otsego, Deacon Dean Herman celebrant. Military Honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030. Cremation will follow. Contributions in memory of Al may be made to St. Margaret School.
