Exceeding Expectations
“If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.” – Matthew 5:41 The difference between contenders and champions is that champions do more than what is expected of them. Examples: • Basketball great Larry Bird was known to have come very early in the morning to run the catwalk at Boston Gardens and by practicing free throws. He did more than what was expected of him. • No one expected a young Western Michigan University Men’s Basketball team to win the MAC West Championship this past season. They exceeded expectations! • I know of some runners this summer who will be putting in extra miles leading up to Fall Cross Country competition. Champions exceed expectations! This is also true in the spiritual realm. The above verse is part of a cluster of verses taken from The Sermon on the Mount which challenges us to go deeper by: • Turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:39). • Going the second mile (Matthew 5:41). • Loving our enemies (Matthew 5:44). People must have thought Jesus was out of His mind when He said they should go the second mile; but He was giving something more than good advice. He was giving them a principle to live by. The first mile is compulsory, the second mile is voluntary. Try it and see what happens! Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for going the second mile for us. Help us to go the second mile for you. Mary Lou passed away May 28, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 14 years Keith Button; her children: Mary Ellen (Ron) Schwenn, Denise (Andy) Stennett, Geri (Richard) Kelley, Chris Nickels, and Lori Nickels; step-children: Robert Button and Kathy (Dale) Myaard; thirteen grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years William Nickels. Mary Lou was a graduate of Aquinas College and was a life member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Wayland and was a former Lioness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013 at 12:00 PM, Noon at St. Therese Catholic Church, with Father Christian Johnston officiating. Friends may visit with Mary Lou’s family from 10:00 AMNoon, prior to mass at the church. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery. M a t t h e w passed away Monday, May 27, 2013. He was born February 12, 1970 in Plainwell to Larry and Mary (Dumas) Artis and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a Christian and a member of Plainwell Assembly of God. He volunteered with St. Vincent DePaul Society and had also served as president of TOPS Michigan Chapter 610. Surviving are two sons, Matthew Alan Artis, Jr. and David Isaiah Artis, both of Otsego; his parents, Larry and Mary Artis of Otsego; brothers, William ‘Bill’ (Tammy) Artis and Michael (Tony Holewinski) Artis, both of Kalamazoo; a sister-in-law, Susan Artis of Kalamazoo; a niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Artis in 2010; and by his grandparents. Memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Plainwell Assembly of God where memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 29, 2013, with Pastor David Alderman officiating. Born May 26, 1961 in Allegan, MI, she is the daughter of Byron and Sandy Patrick (Frye). Lori graduated from Martin High School. She was preceded in death by father, Byron Patrick and sister, Karla Patrick. Lori is survived by husband, Ron Williams; three children, Dallas Mason, Sara Mason (Chris), Megan Williams; four grandchildren; mother, Sandy Frye; sisters, Wendy Drewyor (Dennis), Teresa Coburn (Gary), Lesia Jones and Amy Peters (Matt).The family would like to thank everyone for the many expressions of love and kindness and for all memorial donations in their time of sorrow. A private Memorial Service/Potluck will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 6:30 8:30 pm at the Martin United Methodist Church.

From her playing in the kitchen band that she loved so much, to having Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners. Also, taking her to doctor’s appointments and shopping. She always looked forward to having chinese food together. She was a wonderful lady who will be missed.
