Dan Nulty, a 1960 graduate who “is an Otsego Bulldog and always will be,” is the 2013 recipient of the Otsego High School Outstanding Alumnus Award. In high school, Dan played basketball, baseball, ran cross country and track and served as his class president and vice president. Dan went on to Aquinas College majoring in accounting. He played basketball, tennis and ran cross country and served as his student body president at Aquinas. After college, Dan spent a few years teaching and coaching, but left that career in 1967 to join his father in the family business, Nulty Insurance Agency. Through Dan’s leadership, Nulty Insurance grew from 3 employees to two locations and more than 35 employees. Nulty Insurance was the first recipient of the Citizens Insurance Company Outstanding Agency Award, which it has now won three times. Dan serves on the National Education Board for Citizens Insurance Company (CIC) and has taught insurance for CIC since 1982.

My Mom is the best because...... Dear Shoppers Guide, My Mom is the best. There are many reasons why I think this way. For example, my Mom, plain out LOVES ME. If she didn’t wash my clothes, I would become dirty and STINKY and if she didn’t cook, I would starve to death. As I just mentioned, my Mom loves me soooo much. She loves me too much because she kisses me in public and a boy ten years old doesn’t like that. Additionally, she not only loves me but she washes my clothes too. I go to practice three nights a week and slide into home base. That makes all my baseball clothes filthy. Last of all, starving would be painful and my Mom, who’s the best Mom, wouldn’t do that to me. It’s not always easy to cook for a ten year old boy who was just at practice. MY MOM TRULY LOVES ME.

Plainwell-area veterans will observe Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th, 2013, with a ceremony at the Greater Plainwell Veterans’ Memorial in Sherwood Park. The ceremony will commence at Noon when the American Legion Post 84 Color Guard salutes all lost at sea from the railroad trestle bridge adjacent to the Memorial, then marches to the Memorial for the rest of the ceremony. The memory of all Plainwell-area veterans who lost their lives in the nation’s conflicts dating back to the Civil War will be honored with the dedication of their names engraved on the face of the granite Memorial. Obituaries William MINER AGE 52 - OTSEGO, MI
William passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 in Kalamazoo. Bill was born August 30, 1960 in Kalamazoo, the son of William and Maryann (Sivits) Miner Sr. In his leisure time Bill enjoyed shooting, hunting, fishing, vacationing with Sue, spending time with family and playing and running an online canasta league. On September 28, 1979 in Otsego, he was married to Susan Boylan who survives. Also surviving are his siblings, Joseph (Denise) Miner of Zeeland, Michelle (Jeffery) Coulter of Otsego, Geana Miner of Plainwell, Dorothy (Stewart) Warrington of East Jordon, Viva (Larry) Benton of Plainwell and Amy Miner of Plainwell; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Letha Burkhead and Brenda Dean; nephews, Larry Benton III, Matthew Warrington and Joseph Miner III; and stepmother Viva Miner Sr. Friends may meet the family at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego
from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday or Saturday at 12 Noon at Watson Bible Church, where services will be held at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Greg Carlson officiating. Edith I. CHAPMAN AGE 81 – PLAINWELL
Edith Ilene (Werner) Chapman passed from this life in her home surrounded by her loved ones on May 3, 2013. She was born in Allegan on November 15, 1931, to George Sr. and Laura Werner. She lived for the times she could be with her family, enjoyed cooking large meals and having us all around the table to share our love and her fabulous food. She loved playing bingo and taking trips to the casino. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary (Robert) Wiley, and her granddaughter Laura Luepkes. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, James, her daughter Janice (James) Dyer, son Martin Chapman, grandchildren Amber Smith, Amanda Wright, Travis Chapman and James Dyer II, great-grandchildren, Christopher, Martin, Nicholas, Hunter and Nevaeh. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Ruth Jones, George Werner Jr., Sandra Culver and Gary Werner. Cremation has taken place and no memorial is planned at this time. Her wish was that any memorial contributions be made to Wings of Hope Hospice, Allegan, Michigan for the loving care they provided to her during her last days. Arrangements by

Eugene G. ‘Gene’ BOOK AGE 80 – OTSEGO
Eugene Book passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at his home. Mr. Book was born August 29, 1932 in Battle Creek to Gordon and Fern (Francisco) Book. For many years he was employed at the MacSimBar as a paper maker, retiring from Rock Tenn as Tower Boss Supervisor in 1994. In his leisure time Gene enjoyed working on tractors, golf, horseshoes and especially family time. He was a member of the Good Sam Mobile Mid Mittens Club Chapter 38. On June 30, 1956 in Galesburg, MI he married the former Donna Allan, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters and a son, Eugenia (Roger) Jackson-Kling, Christopher (Kim) Book and Annette (Roger) Bayne; grandchildren, Amy (Erik) Burkhead, Matthew (Jamie) Jackson, Michelle (Josh) Whipple, Nicole Kling and Nathan Kling; greatgrandchildren, Alexis, Kora and Ivy Burkhead, Zachariah Whipple and Alexis Schmitt; sisters, Deanna Elliott and Louise VanHout; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by siblings Maxine Harback, Charles and Leon Book. Friends may visit with Gene’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Monday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. Cremation will follow with burial of ashes at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego at a later date. Evelyn Bowman passed away May 5, 2013. Evelyn's family includes her children: Carrie (Marty) Zagummny, Richard (Denise) Bowman, Judy Meyers, Laurie (Al) Madison, Jim (Deborah) Bowman; brothers and sisters, 19 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Austin, brother David, sister Donna and grandson Ben. Evelyn was a member of the Martin UMC since 1960. Services were held Friday, May 10th at the Martin United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions can be made to The Martin United Methodist Church or Heartland Hospice.
