Monday, April 9th

DYNGUS D AY The Monday after Easter is considered a holiday in Poland. Dyngus Day was star ted as a way to provide merriment after the seriousness of Lent comes to an end. Dyngus Day is traditionally the day boys tried to catch the attention of girls by throwing water on them or hitting their legs with twigs or pussy willows. Tuesday is the day of revenge for the ladie s throwing crockery and dishes at the boys. Dyngus Day is a commemoration of the birth of Christianity in Poland (966 AD) in which Holy Baptism was administered on Easter Monday, uniting all Poland under the banner of Christianity.

Curb Appeal On A Budget By Tresa Erickson If you have ever bought a home, then you know how important curb appeal is. The more inviting the exterior of a home is, the more attractive it is to buyers and often the higher price it will bring. Curb appeal is important, whether you are a buyer, seller or a homeowner. An attractive home exterior can make all the difference in liking your home and feeling at peace with it the moment you arrive. It's no secret that increasing the curb appeal of a home can cost big bucks. A new roof, new siding, new windows and new landscaping can really add up. Fortunately, there are some ways you can add to your home's curb appeal without breaking the bank. You can start by studying the landscape and removing any weeds and overgrown hedges, trees, etc. Remember, you need to be able to see your home. If you've got a lot of trees blocking the front of your home, make sure you trim them. Your landscape should be neat, too. If your grass is patchy, you might try reseeding it in the spring or fall. Once your landscape has been cleaned up, you can start identifying key areas that could use some sprucing up. Would your freestanding mailbox look better with some grasses or flowers around the base? Could your flowerbeds use some more color? Would an ornamental tree make a nice addition to your side yard?

Once you've got the yard under control, it's time to tackle the house. You might want to start with the front door. Is it clean and in good condition? How's the paint job? A fresh coat of paint can really liven up a front door. Add a new kick plate, doorknob, welcome mat and a pot of flowers, and you will have a very inviting entryway. Pay attention to your windows, gutters and lighting, too. Are they clean and in good condition? Could the windows and gutters use a new coat of paint? Do some of the lights need to be updated? Take a look at the driveway and walkways. You definitely want to clean them, and depending upon their condition, you might want to resurface or stain them. If you have the means, you might even want to tile your walkways. Don't forget to use an edger near sidewalks and the driveway. When you have finished, stand back and study the overall picture. Fill in any empty areas with container gardens and consider adding a water feature, lawn ornament or some other item to make your home and yard really stand out. These are just some of the things you can do to add more curb appeal to your home. Do what you can, and if you still don't like what you see, consider hiring a landscape designer for a consultation. It will cost you between $200 and $400, but it will be worth it. The designer will

see things you don't and come up with creative fixes. You might even be able to implement most of the design yourself, eliminating costly labor, or do it in stages to spread out the cost over time.

Spring—A Time Of Change By Doris A. Black

decking for the same sized deck would cost two to three times that price. Family room additions are one of the earliest spring projects to get started once the ground thaws. Typically, the planning stages of the project take place throughout the winter, such as working up a floor plan, collecting bids and selecting materials and colors. As spring approaches, homeowners and contractors alike are anxious to break ground. “The average home today is smaller with sliding doors that open onto a patio or deck off the back of the house. Families want a place to hang out together so the sliders are removed and that becomes the opening for the addition,” says Scott. A 16' x 20' family room addition off the back of a house is the most requested size. Usually the homeowner will want vaulted ceilings or a fireplace. It’s a resurgence of the great room where multiple activities take place in the same area. One end of the room might contain a big-screen television and group seating, while the other end includes space for a desk with a computer or large table for games or school projects. A room addition such as this may take two to three months to complete and cost between $15,000 and $25,000, depending on the complexity of the project and materials used. Most of the additions Scott builds have crawlspaces underneath, but he’s put full basements in as well. When thinking about a large project such as this, homeowners should “have a budget in mind and zero in on what level of quality they want.” For example, countertops range from $20/ft. for the average top to over $100/ft. for granite. Most reputable contractors are flexible and offer homeowners suggestions for getting the highest-quality materials while

staying within their budget. During the winter, do some research to get a feel for the price you’re willing to spend on individual items, such as tile flooring or bay windows. Come spring, you’ll be armed and ready to make those final decisions. Another popular spring home improvement project centers on the garage—either erecting a new garage where there was none before or replacing a crumbling, one-stall, 752240 4.1.12

As winter draws to a close, and the days get longer, our thoughts turn to outdoor home improvement projects. Have you been dreaming of building a new deck, adding on a room or constructing a garage? Well, spring is here and your dreams can come true. “Decks, garages and room additions are the most popular spring home improvement projects,” says Scott Steffan of Steffan Construction in Morton, IL. Everyone enjoys spending time outdoors during spring. Building a deck can bring new life to a seldom used backyard. Adults will find it a quiet and relaxing retreat; kids, a place to hang out with their friends. Nothing beats casual dining outdoors on a warm spring evening. Plan your deck to take advantage of the yard features you most admire, such as flowerbeds or a grove of trees. When building a deck, work carefully around existing trees. Try not to disturb their roots during the foundation stage of construction and don’t allow heavy equipment to park near them. Until now pressure-treated wood has been the standard for decking. Today, advances in technology have produced a new product called composite decking. Composite decking is made of a combination of plastics and wood chips or sawdust. It contains over 50% recycled materials, making it environmentally friendly, and it is durable, strong and resistant to warping, cracking, splitting and termites. Composite decking does not need sealing, painting or staining, and since it doesn’t absorb moisture, it will look new for years to come. All of these features make composite decking virtually maintenance free. But that freedom doesn’t come without a cost. While a typical 10'–16' deck made with pressure-treated wood might run $700–$800 in materials, composite

detached garage. Many homeowners are now opting to tear down their old one-stall, detached garages and build new two-stall garages tucked behind and attached to their homes. The most important thing homeowners can do when building a deck, adding a room or constructing a garage is to follow the city codes and get inspections if required. Then and only then can you give new life to the areas of your home that sorely need it.

Everyone Can Have A Beautiful Lawn By Doris A. Black

As a busy, working mom, I haven’t paid much attention to my lawn over the years except to notice when it needs cutting. Then it’s a chore I don’t relish. I usually cut it short, so I won’t have to cut it again for a while. I don’t have the greenest lawn on my block and there are a few weeds and bare spots, but it will come back, won’t it? Maybe not, as I’ve recently learned. Like other plants, lawn grasses need, air, water and food on a regular basis to survive. You can’t ignore your lawn and expect it to reward you with a healthy appearance. Regular lawn maintenance is a must and should include aeration,

We Haul It All!

watering and fertilizing, not just mowing. The lawn gets a lot of abuse from children playing, pets romping and even you walking over the same space to and from the car every day. Over time the soil beneath the grass becomes compacted, unable to breath. There are two ways to aerate the soil. One method, though not the best, is the old-fashioned way of doing it by hand. If it is just a small area of grass, you can use a garden fork to puncture and aerate the ground. However, because this method of forcing the tines into the ground further compacts the soil, it is not recommended. A more effective method is to rent or buy a core aerator from a garden store or rental center. This device actually removes a plug of soil every few inches, allowing water and air to reach deep into the soil. Aerating in the spring and fall will help new seed get established and allow fertilizers to penetrate the soil. Grasses need water to grow. It is true that some grasses go dormant in hot weather, but they don’t look very nice. If you don’t live in an area with water rationing, you may want to water your lawn regularly to keep it looking green and growing during hot spells. Always water in the morning. This gives the grass time to dry, preventing fungus and disease. Water deeply. Watering to the depth of an inch will encourage deep rooting systems, fostering a

healthier lawn. Most homeowners make the mistake of mowing too low. Three inches should be the minimum height. A good rule of thumb to follow is to never cut more than one-third the height of the grass at one time. Often we let the grass get too long because we are out of town or too busy to cut it when it really needs it, then we cut it back to the usual height. This “scalping” can shock the grass, causing it to stunt and turn yellow. For a healthier lawn, set the mower at a higher level for a first cut, then mow again a few days later at a lower level. It may seem like more work, but in the long run repairing or replacing a damaged lawn would be even more costly and time consuming. Every lawn needs regular feeding to maintain its beauty and health. Fertilizers contain nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K) and fillers to help with distribution. During the growing season, use a fertilizer high in nitrogen, the first number in the series. For example, a bag of fertilizer may read 10-5-5.The first number is higher than the second and third, so you know this particular fertilizer is high in nitrogen. In the fall you’ll want a fertilizer with low nitrogen and higher phosphorous and potassium like 3-10-10. For a new lawn, you’ll want a fertilizer high in phosphorous, such as 7-9-7. To have your lawn looking its best, fertilize it two to four times per year. If you have any questions, consult a lawn specialist. While a healthy lawn will be able to resist most weeds, an unhealthy lawn invites trouble. In the Midwest the worst kind of trouble is called Creeping Charlie or Creeping Jenny. This insidious weed can destroy a lawn quickly if left unattended. It reproduces faster than rabbits, by seed and by layering, and roots everywhere it touches the ground. The runners slowly slither just above the soil surface spreading like wildfire. It will climb annuals, perennials or anything else in its path, smothering them until they die from lack of light, air and moisture. Pulling the vines by hand, as soon as they are spotted, is the most judicious response. However, if even one leaf is left behind or accidentally dropped on the way to the compost pile, it will live to spread wherever it falls. Continued...

Everyone Can Have A Beautiful Lawn By Doris A. Black (Cont.) Whether choosing to use pesticides or an organic method to stop the invasion of Creeping Charlie, it must be attacked with persistence and tenacity. There are several methods, besides hand pulling, for removing Creeping Charlie from your lawn. The first is to use a metal rake with tines that are very close together, raking the vines out of the grass. Repeated rakings are necessary to ensure positive results. You can also rent a power rake or dethatching machine to remove the vines. Again, it may be necessary to repeat the process before all the vines are removed. The third method is to use a boron treatment, altering the chemical balance of the soil, which will kill the weed but not the grass. The boron stays in the soil, weakening the plant and eventually starving it to death. However, because the

MN S

chemical will not break down or leach from the soil for years, it could take you more than five years to actually wipe out the weed. In addition, too much boron in the soil will prevent anything from growing, including grass, while too little will not kill the weed. Therefore, it is best to contact your local agriculture extension office for advice before applying any amount of boron to the lawn. There are several chemical controls on the market today. Each needs repeated applications to completely eradicate the weed before re-seeding the soil. Ask your local garden center for their best recommendation. Pests can also wreak havoc on a lawn. In many parts of the country, moles have become a real nuisance. They tunnel through the lawn just below the surface, looking for food, espe-

cially white grubs. A white grub is actually the larvae stage of the June beetle. In large populations, grubs can be more damaging to your lawn than moles because they feed on grass roots. If you have dead patches of grass in your yard, dig up a square foot and flip the sod over. If you count more than 15 white grubs, you’ve got a serious pest problem and will likely end up with no lawn at all if left unattended. Your local garden center can recommend the latest products for killing grubs. It may take some time, however, before the moles realize the absence of grubs and move on. If you can’t wait, purchase or rent a live trap for relocating the moles to a more desirable location. With a little extra effort, anyone can have a beautiful healthy lawn.

Moles feed on grubs, both can wreak havoc on your lawn.

Deck Design By Andrew McGlothlen If you are looking for a place to grill, socialize or just relax after a long day of work, you may want to consider adding a deck to your home. A deck provides a place for a family to gather outside and enjoy nice weather, have a good meal and spend quality time together. It can add to the value of a home as well. Raised decks can even provide shelter for exits from the home or stored equipment. If you are going to build a deck, the first thing to do is to check with the local zoning office to investigate regulations on decks. With these regulations, you will know the minimum standards for building. This will also give you a chance to make sure you can build a deck. Once you have these regulations, start thinking about what purposes you want your deck to serve. Would you like a cooking space? Are you surrounding a hot tub or a pool? Do you

intend to have a patio set for meals? With these purposes in mind, you can begin to consider how you want to shape your deck. Keep in mind that building a deck without an access point from the house can create another difficult project-installing an access point. Using measurements of your backyard and graph paper, draw out a few possibilities for your deck. Outline the potential border of your deck on your plans and place anything you would want on your deck in the deck space you have created. This will help tell you if the deck you plan to build is going to be large enough and give you an idea of what your deck will look like when fully furnished. When you have your design, begin investigating how much you will need of various materials. Start with the standard regulations from your zoning commission. You will probably want to go above and beyond the regulations, though, as they are a minimum standard. For increased safety, use extra fortifications and quality building material. While you are in this stage, one important factor to consider is whether or not your deck is going to be attached to your house. If it is, you may also have to deal with siding issues and the actual attachment to the house. If your deck is freestanding, as many are, you will still have to accommodate for nearby siding and the structure of the house. As you plan your deck, keep in mind that several accessories can be added. If you have stairs or an overhang, are you going to install lighting? Although accent lights can be added along stairs and wiring can be run for overhead lighting later, it is much easier to include that in the original plans. Are you going to be covering your spigot for your backyard? If so, how do you propose to access that spigot once the deck is constructed? Are you installing railing around the perimeter of the deck? Depending on the height of the deck, this may be mandatory by regulation. Even if it is not mandatory, it can create an attractive border as well as a safety feature. If there are any water elements

included, how will you access control panels and plumbing if there are problems? If there are trees in the area in which you propose to build your deck, do you intend to build around them for natural shade, or do you plan on cutting them down for the wood? These are just a few questions that may come up as you are finalizing plans for your deck. Keep in mind that the more complex your deck plans get, the more likely you are going to need a contractor. Also, remember that the building permit requires inspections. While these inspections can be thorough, they are not a guarantee of any work. They are designed to help protect you and whoever may own the home in the future. If you have concerns about the safety of your plans or construction, consult a contractor for advice or help.

Fenced In By Tresa Erickson You have lived in your home for quite some time now, and for the most part, you enjoy it. It is warm and cozy with enough space for everyone and everything. You like the yard as well; there is one little problem with it, however. There is no fence so there is no privacy. You could build a fence or have one installed. Either way, you will need to select the right material for the job. Fences come in all types of materials. Some of the more common ones

include: • Bamboo. This durable material makes a great choice for the eco-conscious. It can be grown in just six months, is extremely tough and requires no maintenance. • Composite. This strong material looks like wood, but holds up even better. It comes in a wide range of colors and requires no maintenance. • Metal. This material offers many options from intricate ornamental iron fences to simple chain link fences. It is very durable but requires extra care to prevent corrosion. • Stone. This attractive material is very durable but can be labor intensive. The stone can be dry stacked or set in mortar; mortar will take longer but will make for a stronger fence. • Vinyl. This material is also very durable and requires very little maintenance. The selection of colors is limited, however, and generally the higher the quality of the vinyl, the more the

fence will cost. • Wood. This material makes an excellent choice for a fence because of its durability. If treated, most types of wood will last an average of seven to 10 years beyond their normal life expectancy. Like metal, wood fences require some maintenance to keep them in good condition. In addition to a material, you will have to select a fence design. If privacy is your main objective, you might want a privacy fence. Check local ordinances first to find out what regulations are in place on fencing. Traditional privacy fences are six feet high with four-inch wide boards spaced less than an eighth of an inch apart. Semi-privacy fences have boards spaced farther apart. While privacy may be your main objective in your backyard, you might want something a little different in your front yard. You might want a farm fence or a classic cottage picket-style

If privacy is your main objective, you might want a privacy fence. fence. You might want a wider slat fence or a purely decorative fence for visual appeal. Along with design, you will want to select a style of fence. This can range from gothic to flat and should suit your personal preferences as well as the style of your home. You may like the gothic style, but it might not work with your contemporary house. When selecting a fence, do your homework and learn everything you can. You will be investing a lot of time and money in the project, so you want to do it right.

Wanted: Old Cell Phones My name is Karen McGuire, the daughter of Jimmy & Kumi McGuire and I'm a 7th grader at Woodrow Wilson Middle School. Recently, I was accepted into a program called People to People. This summer, I will be taking a trip to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales to learn about their cultures and what it takes to become a student ambassador. I need to raise funds for my tuition on this trip. One of the ways is recycling old, used or even broken cell phones. I am working with a company called PhoneRaiser in Texas. I send them the cell phones; they refurbish them and send them to third-world countries or people in the army. I found out through this program that 1 phone can contaminate up to 39,000 gallons of water if disposed of in a normal landfill, and that currently only 4% of the cell phones get recycled.

If you have any old cell phones, or work for a company that might have a pile of them laying around the office, could you PLEASE bring them to:

Puzio of Plainwell, Mich., recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Puzio and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a. m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Puzio spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training. Puzio and other recruits also received instruction on the Marine Corps' core values--honor, courage and commitment, and what the core values mean in guiding personal and professional conduct. Puzio and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour, team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and addressed as "Marines" for the first time in their careers. Words of

Faith &Hope

CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY! On Easter Sunday, Christian believers all over the world will gather to sing, “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today.” I have never been able to sing it with dry eyes. This great Easter hymn gives us words of faith and hope as follows: 1. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ was an earth-shaking experience. In Matthew’s account, “There was a violent earthquake” (Matthew 28:2). An angel descended. Guards of the tomb dropped as dead men. Inside the tomb, new life came into that holy body and the world was never the same again. Thus, we sing, “… Earth and heaven in chorus say, Alleluia!” 2. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ was the culmination of His life and work on earth. It was God’s way of confirming Jesus’ words on the cross, “It is finished.” He had done everything necessary to secure our redemption. He had completed the work God sent Him here to do. The resurrection was His welcome home. Thus, we sing “Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!” 3. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is our only hope for eternal life. Jesus said, “Because I live, you shall live also” (John l4:l9) Believers are promised we will see our loved ones again. This is based on His resurrection appearances. They saw Him, recognized Him, heard Him, walked with Him, worshipped Him, touched Him and ate with Him. Why would it be any different than this for us in heaven? Thus, we sing “Lives again our glorious King, Where, O death is now thy sting, Alleluia” 4. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is power for daily living. The first Wesleyan Chapel in London, England, was a deserted iron foundry. It became known as the Foundry Meeting House. This hymn was written by Charles Wesley for the first service in this chapel in l739. Perhaps it was out of his own experience that Mr. Wesley wrote, “Thee we greet triumphant now, alleluia.” With such power for the present and great hope for tomorrow, we can say with Apostle Paul, “Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (I Corinthians l5:57). Happy Easter to you and please worship with us this Sunday in a church “Where Jesus’ love is lived.” Prayer: Dear Lord, fill me with your resurrection power for service in this life and worship with you in the life to come. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Rev. Dan Minor Pastoral friend & colleague of Rev. Joe Shaler Sponsored In Part by:

AGE 74 - PLAINWELL

George went to be with his loving Savior on Friday, March 30, 2012. He was born in Tiverton, RI on April 2, 1937 to Roy E. and Miriam (Armitage) Cory who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his infant son (Feb. 15, 1965); his sister and brother-in-law, Anita (David) Neville, brother-in-law, Craig (Barbara) Heinle and step-granddaughter Katherine Seeber. George is survived and dearly missed by his loving family; wife Carol (Heinle) whom he married on October 21, 1961 in Milwaukee, WI; daughters, Roxanne (Timothy) Seeber of Portage, Rebecca (Larry Zemlick) Cory of Portage, Courtney (Jeffrey) Arlington of Evans, GA, Hilary (Paxton) Olney of Scotts; his grandchildren; Cody, Taylor, Mackenzie and Sage Arlington, Abigail Seeber and Ava and Max Olney; step grandchildren, Mark (Ally) Seeber and Christopher (Courtney) Seeber; step great grandchildren, Jack Seeber and Audrey Mendenhall; brother Douglas (Susan) Cory of Tiverton, RI; sisters-in-law, Nancy Nofield, Barbara Heinle, Mary Coleman; brothers-in-law, Scott (Sue) Heinle, John (Janet) Buckholtz; many nieces and nephews, dear friends and business associates. He was owner of George Cory and Associates, a manufacturer’s rep agency and was nationally known in the automotive aftermarket. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Kalamazoo and lived his faith every day in a quiet, very simple way. George never met a stranger and never had an enemy; his greatest joy was to make other people laugh and was a treasured husband, father and friend to his wife and his 4 daughters. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life was held Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Kalamazoo.
