March is Women’s History Month THE THEME FOR 2013 IS “WOMEN INSPIRING INNOVATION THROUGH IMAGINATION: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.” First Computers Were Women
Comprised of Kay McNulty, Marlyn Wescoff, Fran Bilas, Ruth Lichterman, Adele Goldstine (and Betty Snyder), these ladies were the first “computers” working on ENIAC at the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Engineering. Bearing the job title of “computer” the ladies were responsible for making calculations for tables of firing and bombing trajectories, and to determine the correct sequence of steps to complete the calculations for each problem and to set up the ENIAC accordingly. (This, by the way, meant the women manuevered 3,000 switches and 80 tons of hardware in order to program ENIAC by hand). The need to perform the calculations with greater speed prompted ENIACs development, hence making these flesh-and-blood “computers” obsolete. Adele Goldstine and Betty Jennings were instrumental in programming ENIACs stored program, Goldstine was also responsible for writing ENIAC’s original technical manual. Through their contributions, we gained the first software application and the first programming classes. The ladies of ENIAC were inducted into the WITI Hall of Fame in 1997.

America's First Lady of Engineering Lillian Moller Gilbreth is known as the Mother of Modern Management and America's First Lady of Engineering. She was the first female to be elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
Lillian Moller was born in Oakland, California on May 24, 1878. In 1900, she received her Bachelor's degree in Literature from the University of California at Berkeley. Two years later, she earned her Master's degree in Literature. In 1915, Lillian earned her Doctoral degree in Psychology from Brown University.
Eleven years before receiving her Ph.D., Lillian married Frank Gilbreth. Together, they had 12 children. Two of the children went on to write two books, "Cheaper by the Dozen" and "Belles on Their Toes," about their life in the Gilbreth household. Frank and Lillian devoted themselves to finding the "one best way" to perform any task in order to increase efficiency and productivity in industry. These studies are called time and motion studies.

In June 1924, Frank died suddenly of a heart attack. Lillian continued the work they had begun, writing four books and teaching industrial engineering courses at various schools, including Purdue, Bryn Mawr, and Rutgers. Lillian Gilbreth has accomplished many things. She was the first person to integrate psychology into concepts of industrial management.
During the Great Depression, President Hoover asked her to join the Emergency Committee for Unemployment. While on this committee, she created a successful nationwide program, "Share the Work," that created many new jobs. During World War II, Lillian worked as a consultant for the government. She oversaw the conversion of factories to military bases and war plants. Lillian is credited with many inventions. These inventions include the foot-pedal trash can and refrigerator door shelves.
During her lifetime, Lillian Gilbreth received many honors. At the age of 89, she was the first woman to be elected into the National Academy of Engineering. She was also issued membership number 1 by the Society of Women Engineers. Lillian Gilbreth died on January 2, 1972 in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 94.

Harry B. Waldron went to join our Heavenly Father Monday, February 25, 2013. He was preceded by the passing of his father Clayton, mother Ethel, sisters, Beatrice, Evelyn and Belva, and brother Clyde. Harry was born August 5, 1923. He proudly served as a medic during WWII and participated in the Battle of The Bulge. He was a life member of VFW Post 3030 and a member of AMVETS. For 34 years he had been employed at Menasha Corp. On August 21, 1949 in Allegan he married Helen Kellogg, his wife of 64 years, who survives. Also surviving are his sons, Dennis Sr. and Sally Waldron of Allegan and Greg and Denise Waldron of Fennville; grandsons Dennis Jr. and Matt; granddaughter Ginger; and great grandson Heath; sister Harriet Creech of Alamo; as well as many nieces and nephews, all whom he loved dearly. Harry and Helen loved and were strongly supported by their church family at Otsego Methodist Church, especially Pastor Joe, as well as many dear friends and neighbors. Funeral Services will be held at Otsego Methodist Church at 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 1, 2013. Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial will follow at Blackman Cemetery, Allegan, with Military Honors by VFW Post #3030 and Michigan National Guard. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or Christian Neighbors. What have I done that has made you ignore me and seemingly has cast me from your presence? You once called me a “beautiful person” and a “super guy” as well, so what’s happened? I haven’t changed one bit, but it’s so strange how you have. I treated you with respect and handled you with care because I did care. I consoled you a few times in your dark hours, and I was there for you when you needed help or a helping hand, anytime, anywhere. All you had to do was ask. It was never about me, and you know it’s true. I certainly don’t deserve what you’re doing today. Come on Rachel, don’t I at least deserve a proper goodbye if nothing else. You know my number and you know where I live, don’t I deserve a call or a note on my door? I’ve got to go for now, but let’s just see if you have any kind of a heart.

Margaret A. Holcom passed away Monday, February 25, 2013, at her home. Mrs. Holcom was born January 8, 1926 in Tustin, Michigan to Eugene and Martha (Reynolds) Fauble. Margaret was a devoted homemaker who most enjoyed spending time with her family. In her leisure time she enjoyed watching sports and reading. Over the years John and Margaret spent many happy times camping with family and friends. For the last 33 years she had been a faithful member of Peace Ev. Lutheran Church of Otsego. On May 7, 1949 in Tustin she married John R. Holcom, who survives. They were blessed with four children, Ronald (deceased) (Kathy) Holcom of Holt, Carol Rose of Plainwell, John (Deb) Holcom of Tifton, GA and Marcia (Dale) Working of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Bush of Warren, MI; several very special nieces and nephews; and extended family, Dick Gary, Cindy Gordon and Jo Ann Winkel. Preceding her in death were her parents; two sisters, Edith McClain and Agnes Shagene; and a brother, Elmer Fauble. Funeral Services were held at Peace Ev. Lutheran Church Thursday, February 28th, with Pastor Jason Thiel and Pastor Josh Olson officiating. Cremation followed with burial of ashes at Sherman Township Cemetery, Osceola County. Contributions in memory of Margaret may be made to Peace Lutheran Church or Wings of Hope Hospice. Robert (Rob) G. QUARRY, Jr. BORN 1-21-59 – DIED 2-27-13
Robert passed away peacefully at Borgess Hospital. He was born to Robert Sr. and Beryl Quarry and lived on Orleans St., Otsego until he entered the Army from 1978 to 1986. Rob married Jo VanDerhoff on June 10, 1989. He worked at Evergreen Packaging for 21 years. He enjoyed building models, collecting knives, bowling, movies, and his animals. Surviving are his wife, Jo, daughters Heather, Kayla (Otsego), and stepdaughter Christy (Allegan), mother Beryl Quarry (Otsego), Maria and Frank Scarcella (Delton), Roberta and Larry Karanko (Las Vegas), Sharon and Joe Case (Hopkins), Steve and Barb Quarry (Allegan), Dave and Diane Quarry (Allegan), Terry and Jackie Quarry (Ohio), several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by son, Justin and father, Robert Sr. Cremation has taken place and the celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Society or ASPCA.

Otsego Chosen for Select Level Michigan Main Street Program
LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced two communities have been selected by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) to take part in the Selected Level Michigan Main Street program. Those communities are Otsego and the City of Lansing’s Downtown district. Lansing’s Old Town district has been part of the Michigan Main Street program since 2006. As part of the Selected Level of Michigan Main Street, Otsego and Downtown Lansing will receive five years of intensive technical assistance, with a focus on revitalization strategies designed to attract new residents, business investment, economic growth and job creation to their central business districts. “The Michigan Main Street program will help these two communities create opportunities for redevelopment, placemaking and economic growth just as it has in downtowns throughout Michigan for the past 10 years,” Snyder said. “Vibrant communities and downtowns are critical as we look to attract new investment, help local businesses grow and retain and attract the talent that is needed to reinvent Michigan.” The Michigan Main Street program ties in with Governor Snyder’s placemaking efforts to create vibrant communities across Michigan. These efforts are based on numerous studies showing that investing in placemaking creates vibrant city centers and downtowns, making the state economically stronger. There are currently 42 communities participating in the Michigan Main Street
program at all levels, including 18 at the Select and Master levels. The underlying premise of Main Street is a Four Point Approach® that encourages community economic development in four areas: • Organization: Getting everyone working toward the same goal and assembling the appropriate human and financial resources to implement a Main Street revitalization program. • Promotion: Selling a positive image of the commercial district and encouraging consumers and investors to live, work, shop, play and invest in the Main Street district. • Design: Getting the downtown into top physical shape. Capitalizing on its best assets, such as historic buildings and pedestrian-oriented streets, is just part of the story. • Economic Restructuring: Strengthening a community's existing economic assets while expanding and diversifying its economic base. “Programs like Michigan Main Street provide downtown communities with the tools needed to develop thriving downtowns,” said MSHDA Executive Director Scott Woosley. “In turn, these tools can be used to create jobs, provide desirable places to live and build a sense of place for Michigan residents.” The Michigan State Housing Development Authority is dedicated to building a thriving and vibrant future for Michigan. MSHDA provides tools and resources to improve people's lives through programs across the state. These programs assist with housing, build strong neighborhoods, and help create places where people want to live and work.
